An excellent platformer however it is extremely difficult. Its like the elden ring for it's generation. I only beat it because of the save features of the 3ds release. I wonder how a 12 year old boy during that era finish that game.Updated 1 Month Ago

I have played this game many times and I've gotten quite good at it over the years. Still, the majority of your time will probably be spent on fighting the Yellow Devil and Copy Robot. This playthrough I took the liberty of reading the original instruction manual. It is a butchering of the original Japanese story, describing am empire called "Monsteropolis" that Mega Man has to defend from warlord robots.
This game is still quite innovative and good for its time, allowing you to pick what stage you want to play first provides a lot of gameplay variety, the controls are also quite tight, but not as much as they would come to be in future installments. Though some notable examples of bad game design still exist, like the magnet beam not being identified as mandatory, meaning it is entirely possible to get screwed over in the Wily Castle if you don't pick it up, or the fact that there is no penalty for getting a game over other than losing points, which are worthless in this game.
Overall, 7/10 - great game for 1987.

The first entry in the Mega Man franchise set up a solid foundation for what was to come. Most critiques are closely tied to the developers simply not polishing this installment further, as the many slowdows and random clipping would have made the playthrough considerably longer, if not for the saving grace that are save sates in modern emulators.
Needless to say, the combination of glitches and overall difficulty represents how proudly this game wears its age on its sleeve.

Timing is really demanding, to the point of being unfair. If you're playing on an emulator and are wondering how enemies are able to target you with uncanny precision, I tried rewinding a couple interactions and they're smart enough to target you no matter where you jump from and land.Playing the game, as was the case with many classic series like Kirby and Pokémon, comes with very little instructions, and knowing when and how to use Mega Man's power-ups is never explained. For a game like this, it seems that most of the effort was put into the level design and combat, but not teaching players how to actually playing. While I was able to get to the end despite its frustrating NES-era design, learning enemy timing is not as rewarding as it is from modern titles that expect the same.

Mega Man (1987) would've been a major pain on the original hardware. This game is, straight-up, mean to the player. There would've been so many unfair deaths without rewind. Some of the design in this game is pretty good, like: the levels, boss moves, graphics, and music. But none of that matters if you wouldve been through hundreds of game overs to experience all of it. Save states and rewind are the only reason i was able to reach the credits. The stages themselves are fine barring pits and spikes, but bosses cut you no slack. I have no doubt using the password system this game would've taken 5x long and been 1/2 as enjoyable. That's understandable for then, but I have better things to play and not get stuck on 36 years later.Updated 2 Months Ago

Though the weakest classic Mega Man title due to frustrating obstacles and being overshadow by future innovations, it's not hard to see why Mega Man was such a standout title when it was new. In fact, there is an aesthetic charm to the first game that is lacking in the future games I can't quite put my finger on. Good character design, art direction, and music are all present here right from the get go. Unfortunately, the Wily Castle sections are somewhat weak and rely on boss fights that aren't very fun. It's my least favorite to go back to because of what it lacks, but I still have fun revisiting it from time to time because its a bit shorter.Updated 4 Months Ago

This game is a mess, yet I wouldn't call it a bad game. The designers were clearly learning and this shows as the future games improve over everything this one does. I would only recommend playing this if you're curious about how the series started or if you want a hard game.Updated 4.5 Months Ago

Let's be honest, the original Mega Man doesn't really compare to the others. It's hard, probably harder than any other game in the series, without the fews gimmicks or items helping your quality of life. That being said, it's a solid run&gun/platformer that deserves our respect. The level design, in particular and as sadistic as it is, is examplary.Updated 5 Months Ago

Mega Man is a super hard platform shooting game. Pick a robot master to face, play their level and beat them at the end of their stage to steal their powers. As you play Mega Man gets more and more weapons to use. The controls feel great, even if the enemies do feel a little cheap some times. This is definitely a classic shooter and is worth a play.Updated 6 Months Ago

Mega Man was a great proof of conceptSimple platformer games were very popular because they were often the most successful, and Capcom had a good answer for a new take. You can choose which stage to go first between the 6 robot masters, and defeating one will give you a unique weapon. These stages are mostly excellent - difficult, yes, but the game controls very well, making this actually fun. Unfortunately, after these six stages, the design drops off and it starts to feel very unfair. I could not beat this without the pause glitch on Wily stage bosses, sadly.

Birth of a legend, game very funny and challenging; interesting way of innovation because first you fight with the bosses for get his skills, when you obtein all power ups, you confronts to main villain without before fight all bosses again (even 3 boss in a row) and some platform level complicatedDifficulty is very hard, I could't pass some parts of levels (saving the game) because I was stuck in parts where the precision was almost perfect for win the level
If you have never played it before like me, I totally recommend it

Pros and Cons
+Very Replayable
+A great concept for a game series
-Bad weapons
-Glitchy and laggy
-Questionable design decisions
-Frustrating level design
-Unfair difficulty
All in all, this game is the epitome of a rough start for a franchise. It’s glitchy, frustrating, annoying, difficult for all the wrong reasons, poorly designed and not great to listen to. It doesn’t matter how many good ideas it had if the game isn’t fun to play. If you want to try out Mega Man, start with the second game. Thank me later.

I have to admit, going into this game again when I beat it a decade ago I was certain it was gonna suck but I was pleasantly surprised. This game despite it's archaic design holds up surprisingly well. But as you may expect it still has its flaws that I will nameFlaw 1: The level design is extremely simple, simplicity isn't a bad thing but man there really isn't a single stage where I was like "man that stage was awesome"
Flaw 2: at first I thought I was hallucinating but nope, Megaman really does retain a bit of momentum when he stops moving. This is a problem that actually carried over into the second game but man this makes platforming on narrower platforms even more risky as Megaman can literally just slide of the ledge which is great considering Megaman drops like a 10 ton lead weight in this game.
Flaw 3: There's post hit invincibility in this game for everything except spikes meaning if you get hit and fall into a spike pit you're dead. no chance to try and jump out you just die. Really fucking annoying.
Flaw 4: Ice mans stage. That's it.
Still a fun game despite being fucking 34 years old. But it really does pale in comparison to all it's future games.

It's a good game, and I can see why it is considered a classic, but I really don't think it holds up well at all in terms of gameplay. Now, I don't mind a difficult game, but this is taking it too far. I applaud you if you have the patience and skill to beat this game on original hardware without cheats of any kind.
This game is just peak NES-era bullsh!t level design. You get knocked back from every hit as a result from the sadistic enemy placement. There are platforming sections that demand you to make perfectly timed, pixel-perfect jumps. Everything is out to kill you and health drops are rare. I could go on.
I played this on the legacy collection with the rewind feature. Some will consider this heresy, but to me, it's the only way to enjoy this game. Without it, I'd consider it borderline unplayable and beyond frustrating.
So why am I still giving it a 6/10? Because it does so much right with the difficulty being the only major thing that holds it back. The presentation is great for the NES. The OST is amazing. The freedom to tackle the bosses in any order was very unique at the time. I can appreciate what this game did, but I don't think I'll be returning to it any time soon.

Mega Man have to stop Dr. Wily plans and to do so he have to beat his robots first, each one have a stage then you go into Dr. Wily stages, have a boss rush mode then beat Dr. Wily. To understand the story better you have to read it on the internet or in official books. For the first game as gameplay is not polished, the weapons you get from bosses are so so, is most fraudulent Mega Man game I can say(platforming and enemies).
The music is really good, from all NES titles I think from this one you'll remember most of themes.
The design of the characters is fine.

Mega Man, while being the first game in the series and missing some key features that fans have grown accustomed to over the years - such as Rush adaptors and E Tanks, Mega Man is still a very enjoyable game. That said it can be a very brutal one if you never played a Mega Man title previously. Not the game I would recommend to beginners, but still a fun, and in my opinion a title in the series that doesn't get the credit it deserves.Updated 1 Year Ago

Frustrating start to the Mega Man series. Without the replay ability, I would venture I wouldn't have had the patience to finish this one. A lot of the boss fights require pattern memorization, which inherently means either knowing it going in or dying like 6 times trying to figure it out. I can see how this game would have been an epic adventure for a kid in the 80's to master, what with the hard enemy placement and Rock Paper Scissors matchups, but today it exists more as a relic of its time, since pretty much every numbered entry is vastly better than this one. Still neat to see where the series began though.Updated 1 Year Ago

This game gets some crap, and some of it is justified. Controls are a little slippery especially compared to the games that came after it. Not knowing about the magnet beam on a first playthrough makes wily 1 complete bs, but for me personally, I find this game gets better the more I play through it. Not really a popular opinion, but I'd place this one in my top 5 mega man classic games.Updated 1 Year Ago

Very solid first entry to the series. I can see why it caught on so quickly. The bosses are extremely hard, unless you use that one special power that they're weak to, then they're a push-over. It's surprising how much damage the effective weapon can be. It sometimes will kill them in like 3-4 hits. That has to be way more damage than in the later games. I like all the boss battles except the yellow devil. You basically have to get lucky at least once and then damage boost through it, because there is no way you're going to dodge 10 things flying by in a tiny area.
The ending music is amazing. They really should have used that in other places, because I would listen to that all day.
Overall a pretty good experience, if not occasionally frustrating.

HOO BOY this game hasn't aged well. Lots of repeated screens and slippery controls with very difficult level design. The boss design is the best part of the game if you exclude the yellow devil, and the weapon balancing for Mega Man is pretty all over the place. (Use Elec-beam, it's insanely powerful) Overall the game isn't bad, but while the ideas were interesting and pretty revolutionary at the time, the gameplay balancing is out of wack, and certain stages are a pain to get through. I don't know if I'd recommend this game without the rewind feature in the Mega Man Legacy Collection.Updated 1.5 Years Ago
