Pretty early Dark Souls clone, but doesn't do it as well. I ran into multiple times where a roll or attack input didn't register and let to my death, can't have those kind of bugs in a game where death comes so easily. Is it as hard as Dark Souls? No, it isn't so I don't think it would be a stretch to say if someone wanted to get into soulslike games, to start here. I wouldve given this a 7 had the game not crashed multiple times.

It's a very weak 6. The game is just really flavorless, although not as horrible as a lot of people say. Graphics are actually quite decent texture and model wise, but the art style is very linear and dull, most locations and bosses look the same and nothing stands out in my memory. The game is quite slow and clunky, that's true, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just a different flavor of pacing. However, the lack of variety in weapons (for faith users), lack of interesting gameplay mechanics and spells and the slow pacing make the game repetitive.

However, the worst thing about this game was the performance and stability. Even years later on my modern gaming laptop the performance is abysmal, hovering between 20 and 50 fps with maxed settings. The game kept constantly crashing for some reason, during my 7 hour playthrough I crashed around 10 times. The audio glitches are annoying, as corpses make sound as you push them, dialogue cuts off, you bounce in a T like pose when sprinting down from stairs and other glitches and bugs.

Story was somewhat interesting, but nothing spectacular, you are tasked with beating bad guys because they're bad and came over to do bad things, and you become a bad guy for killing them I guess, with a cheeky god thrown in, it's whatever.

Well, if you want a dark souls lookalike without the bells and whistles, the game is alright to play, just don't get your hopes up and you can go and beat some mobs.

Lords of the Fallen felt like a watered-down Souls game. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, it was still a decent game, it just didn't meet the level of quality and engagement that I've found in previous Souls games that I've played.

Overall, LotF was a fun and challenging game. The environments were nice to look at, even if they all did feel a bit similar, and there was a good sense of progression. There were lots of secrets to uncover, some interesting lore audio notes, and a good variety of interesting weapons that seemed to suit most playstyles. LotF did a lot of this fairly well, and definitely took a lot of inspiration from the Dark Souls series here.

However, there was a lot about the game that was just OK. There wasn't a huge variety of enemies, and it seemed that most enemies could be defeated using very similar strategies and techniques. The bosses also weren't overly challenging, for the most part. Once I got through about 40% of the game, I seemed to be much stronger than anything else I came across, and didn't have too many difficulties, even as the Rogue class which seemed to be the weakest of the three.

Also, whereas I think Dark Souls is a game that does vagueness well, and encourages exploration and diving into the lore, I think Lords of the Fallen missed the mark here. LotF went the Souls route of doing lore and world-building in item descriptions, but a lot of it just didn't seem very deep. It felt like the world was very shallow, and the only thing that happened in the world is what was going on during the game. On top of that, while the world was small and interconnected, it just felt like a pain to get anywhere. There were only a few shortcuts that were really useful, and it was great finding and opening those up. But, at least for my build, clearing out enemies over and over again was a slow and somewhat painful process, so I never felt all that inclined to backtrack or explore too much.

Overall, I had fun with Lords of the Fallen. I think it gets a bad rap as a Dark Souls knockoff. It definitely is, but I think it does enough things well that it's still an enjoyable experience.

It was interesting to read previous reviews giving low scores and starting by stating "as a Soul's fan…"

Well, I never played any of the Soul's games before. I picked up Lord of the fallen because it is supposed to be a good introduction to the genre, and I enjoyed it a lot.

The game has all that I expected after reading and hearing so much about Soul's games. It's a challenging and difficult game (don't care if Dark soul 3 is more difficult – this was difficult), that teaches you to observe and understand the weaknesses of your opponent. It teaches you patience and how to utilize your environment the best you can.

The game looks gorgeous, with medieval architecture and snowy peaks in the distance – and while the world is quite small, as you progress, you discover all those interconnecting passages and shortcuts that can save lots of effort in the future. The music is minimalistic but haunting, and the details of your foes are lovingly done.

The game offer variety of weapons that can be enhanced with runes you craft later in the game and some spell paths to choose from. While there are not many possible builds in the game, when you complete it, you can try a higher difficulty level (which also gives access to a few locked items you could not access before) with a different build. I finished the game with a fighter build, but the other two builds – cleric and a rough, allow different spells and ways to approach a battle.

Issues I can think of are that some areas are used multiple times for boss battles and that the enemy verity is quite limited. The game is slow – and clunky at times - there is no fast action here. Many people indicated a balancing issue with some of the spells, and yes, there are some overly powerful options here – but if this is your entry point to the Soul's genre, you are going to find this hard enough.

Toward the end, I found the whole thing a bit repetitive, possibly because of the small world, but this is a solid 70%-80% game even in today's terms.

As someone who has played all the modern FromSoftware games and is really into Souls-like games, I really did not enjoy this game. I've owned it since 2014 and have tried to get through it multiple times only to quit a couple hours in. This time however I perservered through the slow arduous combat, the horrific headache and motion sickness inducing camera and the not so great enemys and bossfights. The only real positive I give this game is the locations look decent and the armor and weapon design is quite cool. Everything else though was unfun or just strangely implemented.

This is a weird one for me to judge. The souls series are one of my favorite series, and it's no secret this game is a poor imitation of those games. On the other hand I feel like Lords of the Fallen gets put down a hair too much. If you get it for a low price, the value isn't bad. There are some nice ideas here and there, even if they aren't that consequential to the souls formula. Generally this game has more flaws than it has shiny new ideas. The best thing it has going for it is that it's copying it's homework from a source that got it *really* right.

The easiest element to put aside is the story, it's really not worth thinking about. There were a couple of decisions that sort of play counter to what works well in From's games. But barring those, the worldbuilding, dialogue, and voice acting just aren't any where near as good. I'd be interested to see who would go to bat for this game's story, because to me it's excruciatingly dull.

The combat feels like someone tried to design a system based entirely on 2nd hand knowledge of how the souls games work. Without doing the regular thing with this game and calling it "clunky", here's some interesting facts that should concern you. Attacks can be almost instantly canceled into a dodge or block. Enemies won't do this, but they will turn around 180 degrees in one frame to block an attack on their back. Both you and your enemies slide across the floor while attacking, like you're all wearing invisible soap shoes. Both you and your enemies can also jump into the air and spin over 360 degrees after leaving the ground to hit a moving target. All these things look awful and illustrate how unbaked the combat system is.

If you don't play as the warrior with the rage ability, the combat would be pretty frustrating. The rage ability is quite overpowered and can carry you through the game. In fact strength builds in general are a little ridiculous, poise and amour are too useful. While the few little things they do with checkpoints are neat, none of it really matters when the core combat has all these gaping holes in it's design. That doesn't mean the game can't be fun, but man is it slow and repetitive. The unoriginal boss designs and low enemy variety don't help this much either.

A few more nitpicks. The artistic direction is quite stale compared to the dark fantasy in the From games, the level design is serviceable at best—enemy placement is rarely inspired and rooms blend together, and the hitboxes are absolutely atrocious at times. The fact that the dodge doesn't have many i-frames doesn't help this either. Also who decided having the old bearded protagonist breath heavily almost suggestively in my ears each time I used some stamina was a good idea? It's such an uncomfortable audio effect and I really hated hearing it. Last one: there *really* should have been an option to turn off the screen shake. Every action grabs the camera from behind the PC shakes it half to death. Sometime the screen literally shakes at full intensity for multiple seconds, it is the least subtle screen shake I have ever seen.

All in all it sounds like I sort of hate this game. I don't. I was surprised by how much I didn't mind playing it even while I checked off boxes in my head constantly of things I didn't like. All that being said—and I realize the weirdness of this—this game might be worth checking out if you like souls likes, but I am extraordinarily biased.

To be quite honest, I enjoyed the time I managed to play it. The art design is great, the emptiness of the storyline might get on your nerves, as it did on mine. But the biggest problem are definitely the bugs. After being rammed inside a wall 3 times in a row, I simply gave it up, after all I had already lost a 4hrs save previously. And there was this specific corridor I couldn't get past in anyway.
Too much time, wasted.

Lords of the Fallen is a tough , unforgiving game . Battles seem repetitive , which makes it easier in some way .
It's a not as good copy of the Dark souls series .
The map is limited in some ways and rather small , you just go back and forth many times.

Still.... it could've been worse that's why i gave it a strong 7.

As a huge Dark Souls fan, I was bitterly disappointed by Lords of the Fallen. The visuals are beautiful, and certainly better than anything the Souls series has produced as of SotFS. That's the one good thing I can say.

The gameplay is slow and frustrating- even at light load, you move slower than 'fat rolling' in DS. The enemies are fast and attack quickly, while you have a choice of attacking at glacial speed for good damage, or attacking quickly and doing almost nothing.

The map design is terrible- all the beautiful environments and objects are mashed together in similar ways to make it very difficult to navigate, and you are frequently required to go find a door which opened several areas away. The objective hints are always vague and never helpful. The storyline is poorly written, very lacking in any content, and leaves you utterly unaware and uninterested about what is going to happen next. It would barely cover a demo of a Souls game- implicit storytelling is so, so much better than bland storytelling (such as the sidequest in which there is a SASSY WOMAN who has BREASTS, and you FIND SOMETHING for her to receive PLAYFUL BANTER because she's the WOMAN! And it's one of the biggest and most fleshed out sidequests!)

But by far the biggest failing is the bosses. Every one of them is about the same size, uses the same moves (barring a few palette swaps and pyrotechnic effects), moves predictably, hits hard, and has roughly 10,000,000 hp. This means that what should be epic and exciting encounters are always beaten by 1) lock on 2) circle strafe 3) hit them once when they do the move which leaves an opening 4) repeat 200-300 times. This is a stupefyingly boring way to spend 20 minutes (per boss), and if you get hit a couple of times you start again.

In short, this is exactly what would be produced if you took a 16 year old who had watched some youtube videos for a Souls game, gave him an unlimited budget/large production team, and flattered his ego to the point where he believed he could direct a competent Dark Souls clone. It looks good, but has all the charm, depth and satisfaction of snorting wet cardboard until you asphyxiate.

Five Word Review: A much underrated, fun ARPG.

Favorite Thing: The huge weapons. I love huge weapons in RPGs, the bigger the better.

+ The armor, weapons, environments, enemies, everything just looks so fantastic.
+ Obviously designed from someone's love of the Souls series of games.
+ With almost everything maxed, I ran at a stable 1080p 60fps with only 1 crash.

- Everything is a bit too slow. The attacks and the rolls in particular.
- Final boss was a push-over.

Game was challenging and fun for the most part but I used the same weapon pretty much the entire game. At the end that bit me in the butt and I couldn't do any damage to the main boss. Hours and hours of grinding later I upgraded my strength and eventually was able to use a better weapon and defeat him. Kind of ruined the end for me for the most part but I ended up watching quite a bit of Rules of Engagement while grinding and the shows pretty funny. Spent way more time on this game than any other game I've beaten so far and WAYYY more than anyone else on this website spent beating it.

A dark souls type game but more accessible to everyday gamers. The game is beautiful to look at as you traverse the different locations and the combat system is fun and does not feel repetitive. The only negatives for this game was the sound, the sound and music would cut on and off, for the first hour of the game I could only hear my footsteps and grunts when I attacked. Not sure if this was just my copy or if others were having the same problem. The only other issue was the length, I would have liked the game to be more like 25-30 hours on a playthrough.
