Horizon: Forbidden West is nothing short of a masterpiece. From its breathtaking visuals to its immersive story and engaging gameplay, this game is a must-play for any gamer.

The game's open world is absolutely massive, filled with stunning landscapes and dangerous machines. There's always something new to discover, and the sense of exploration is unparalleled. The combat is incredibly satisfying, and the variety of weapons and abilities keeps things fresh.

The story is both epic and personal, and the characters are well-developed and relatable. Aloy's journey is one that will stay with you long after you've finished the game.

The combat in Horizon: Forbidden West is incredibly satisfying. The variety of weapons and abilities keeps things fresh, and the ability to customize Aloy's loadout allows for a truly personalized experience. I particularly enjoyed using the new spear to grapple onto machines and perform takedowns.

I'm writing this review off memory, as it's been a bit since I played the game.

Performance

Performance wise, the game was wonky. I had to restart it often because framerate would just TANK for no reason, usually after cutscenes, dying and respawning, and sometimes after fast-traveling. If I fast traveled very far across the map, the framerate would mostly fix itself. I don't remember if I played it with DLSS on Quality or on Dynamic. Framegen was sometimes on, sometimes off, but mostly off due to not being able to alt-tab without the game crashing. 1440p resolution, with settings optimised(Either Digital Foundry or BenchmarKing) + slightly boosted by myself.

Gameplay

Standard open-world formula. "Undiscovered site" and the like. Compass to guide you to your objective and thankfully NO minimap.

Where the game shines is combat wise. It's super cool and satifying to tear pieces off the machines, and alongside late-game combat, you feel truly like "the chosen one" (admittedly, an overused trope, but written fairly well, more on that in a bit).
Featuring many different bow types, and non-bow weapons, elemental ammo, buffs, etc., you're given plenty of choices to customize your playstyle.

There is a bethesda style skill tree, with 6 different categories, each focusing on different elements, from stealth, to crafting, to spear combat, and so on. There's passive skills, active skills, and weapon skills to unlock. This adds another layer of complexity allowing you to customize further.

Art

Visually, the game is magnificent. Bright and vibrant, the world is really nice to look at and run around in. Until you hear massive mechanical footsteps nearby, go toward them and meet a gigantic metal T-Rex equipped with rocket launchers. This is again where this game shines. Machines are imaginative, detailed, expertly animated. And when I say expertly animated, I mean it. I can not praise the animation team enough. Metal is rigid, and yet these machines have visible muscly elements allowing them somehow feel like they are just any old part of nature.

Story wise, it's your typical "chosen one saves the world" story. Nothing you haven't seen before. But it's fun, immersive, well paced, and a great follow-up to the first game. Where it builds upon the first game is the fact that Aloy now has allies. People who want to fight for her, who care for her, and support her cause, in a world where tribes are isolated into their own religions, these characters choose to defy them, even break their own laws. Some characters are fully fleshed out with questlines of their own, but unfortunately not all of them.

Other quests were fine, nothing too special in terms of variety, but at least the dialogues between the characters were well written.

Speaking of dialogue, at times it felt cringey, but that cringeyness somehow manages to add entertainment value rather than detract from the experience.

Audio, alongside the animation, is also top-notch. Especially when we're talking about machines, and machine factories(named Cauldrons). Pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a triple-A game.

Verdict

Horizon: Forbidden West may follow the familiar open-world, third-person formula, but it elevates the experience with a compelling story, well-developed characters, and absolutely stellar combat. The game’s world is a visual feast, and the attention to detail in both the design and animation of the machines is nothing short of remarkable. While the story and gameplay can feel formulaic at times, especially with the overused "chosen one" narrative, it remains engaging due to the strong writing and the depth of customization options available. If you can overlook the occasional performance hiccups and embrace its formulaic nature, this game is a worthy addition to any library, offering a blend of satisfying combat, intriguing lore, and breathtaking visuals.

Pros:
Same great machine creature designs, vast open world.

Cons:
Dialogue options with other characters always seems unnatural. Too option branches can be stuffed into one interaction. Cinematics remove you from gameplay experience.

I enjoyed this so much more than i ever expected

-Story
The story was quite interesting, nothing spectacular but good enough to not skip cutscenes and actually care about it, it´s about as good as the first game. I personally love the setting of the story, a really original spin on the post apo genre and I liked learning more about what happened to the world before the story of the game, and there is much to learn in that regard. The dialogues and cutscene have been improved, but are still subpar (mainly exposition dialogues) compared to other RPGs, that is the only real gripe in my humble opinion. Every returning character is as solid as they were before, and I´ve grown love some of the new ones (<3 Kotallo)
8/10

-Gameplay
The combat is even better even though the fist one was already near perfect, it´s so unique and just simply fun - shooting the weakpoints of machines 10x bigger than you, using different weapons which all seem unique and you can find which suits you best. You also gain new gadgets and abilities, enhancing puzzles and movement, they are scattered throughout the story so you are encouraged to return to areas you´ve already been to and complete some side content while you are there
9/10

-Extras
The world is visually stunning, I took many screenshots while just wandering. There is so much side content that you will find your favorite - climbing Tallnecks, clearing up camps, finding the collectibles or even whole sidemission which can even impact the main story line sligtly. Even though there is a lot of it, the game does not seem bloated like other RPGs which makes completing them much less tedious
8/10

-Final thoughts
My first game on the PS5 and I couldn´t be happier with the outcome, I usually just rush through the story, maybe colllect some collectible if there is some cool reward or complete side missions here or there, but in this game I had some sessions where no main missions were even played, that speaks volume to how much I personally enjoyed just being in the world doing some random shit for some random lady from literally Nowhere. I love the world even more than before and cant wait for the third main game, and I´m cautiously optimistic about the LEGO spin-off.
This game can be found dirt cheap (the 1st one even cheaper) I bought mine for not even 20 bucks and there is no excuse why not atleast try it out, I really don´t know, why this series is´nt as much praised like other PS exclusives, it´s such a shame because these games deserve it.

A great game that is an improvement on the gameplay, but falls a little flat with the characterization of Aloy. She comes off as very arrogant and self-absorbed in this installment, compared to the humble and questioning nature of her character in the first game that made her so incredibly and instantly relatable and likeable as a character. Apart from that, the game expands the mythos established in the first game pleasantly, with improved gameplay elements and methods of traversal. I did most of the side quests that I found interesting, and the stories were better than the side quests in the original. Combat is just as thoughtful and brutal, and finding enemy camps to eliminate with stealth were still a fun activity to do. Cannot wait to see what the third game does with it's incredible plot twists near the end of the game.

Everything in this game is done well, but the feminist left-wing BS makes this game a bad one. This game is full of lesbians that hate men. It looks like a sweet baby or similar idiots worked on this game.

The funny part is, if we say "women are stupid" they label that as hate speech, but whatever negative women say about men is fine.

Do not get me wrong, this game is a very nice game, but it is ruined by a left-wing communist.

Do the desert a favor and let Drakka kill Yarra one less useless women in charge

Best open world game.

Good
- the elemental damage adds depth to the gameplay and forces you to swap weapons, which adds excitement to the battles. There's also a good variety of weapons to use. Each have their own uses that is effective against certain fights and types of enemies.
- slowing down time really helps with targeting certain parts of machines, and you can actually be accurate without using aim assist on controller
- the music is amazing. The graphics are top tier. The world is so amazingly beautiful.
- the dialogue is top notch. Everything feels very organic. When I walk around a camp i hear conversations everywhere and comments about Aloy. I walk close to someone Aloy knows, and they might comment about something, maybe a side quest or the current events going on in the story.
- The open world is incredible. Can basically jump, climb and swim anywhere. And it has the most organic and immersive feel compared to any other open world game i've played.
- there's a few different styles of play that add diversity to the gameplay. I can hide and set traps to break down machines. I can stalk and stealth kill enemies as they walk by. I can do go complete aggro and fight everything head on. There's so much freedom on which I can approach the game.
- traversing the world feels great, never a bog. Using a mount to reach places combined with fast traveling feels just long enough for me to take in the beautiful world, while not long enough were I feel annoyed. When I get the flying mount, it's even better.

Bad
- i do wish the weapon wheel for traps and potions could be easier to scroll, or I could choose favorites to access a specific item more easily.
- I wish there was a parrying ability. The combat feels a little one dimensional when I can only roll away as a defensive option.

Initially I disliked the game a lot, but it started growing on me as I continued playing, which bumped up my rating .

Visually it looks decent, even good in some places, but some textures are rough, like rusty metal or rocks, and clothes are so stiff, where the fabric is not swaying at all in motion, especially jarring was Sun KIng Avads outfit in cutscenes, where he has a lot of loose flaps, but they were stiff as plastic. Character models are ugly, and this is more of a design choice by the developers. What I mean is that nobody is beautiful. Aloy looks passable in certain outfits and makeup, but really she looks like she's older than 40. I'd appreciate some eye candy, but it's not really a major issue.

Face animations are a hit or miss. Sometimes it looks like it was mocaped, but other times it looks like it was animated by a new intern. Especially outside of cutscenes where the lip movements are uncanny.

The writing is sometimes quite poor, especially when portraying the robot AI. At the beginning of the game there were snakes which just stood in place and looked at a falling shuttle, waiting for me to drop it on them. Dialogue is very poorly written and is sometimes downright awkward, does not feel like a conversation between two adult humans, especially with Varl at the beginning of the game. Instances, like during the embassy attack, where a human stopped a charging metal boar that probably weighs a few tons and held him back, was befuddling. Natikkas teacher dying in front of her was morbidly hilarious. I'm sorry you spent a few days lying in a dank cave, and then soon as soon as you step outside the cave you decide to die. Kotallo had a moment where he's suggesting we kill the leader of the air clan Tekotteh, which would be absolutely ridiculous, but then he complains about our plan to blow up their bulwark. Alva was such an annoying character in the beginning, I absolutely hated her, a constantly complaining hippie with such a punchable face, although I grew to tolerate and even somewhat like her by the end of the game where she grew some balls and stopped being a helpless child.

Sometimes platforming and aiming your pullcaster is infuriating, Aloy completely whiffs grabbing some ledges if she's not angled perfectly. This is especially apparent when trying to jump on those survey drones, where she just does a normal jump and fucking falls to the ground instead of grabbing the drone. The mounts are pretty bad since there's no mount jump, so this makes traversing uneven terrain a pain in the ass, also the mount tends to get stuck on edges and debris. You do unlock a flying mount during the last main mission, which is cool and makes traversing the map a breeze, although the controls are awkward. Why would you adjust the altitude with W and S keys. The pathfinding waypoints suck because they constantly recalculate the path and distance along the main roads, so if you're somewhere up in the mountain or down in a chasm, it will calculate you a long ass roundabout path, instead of a direct short one.

The LGBTQ thing is blown out of proportion, but I definitely noticed some implications of same sex relationships like Petra, or even a straight up trans person like Wekatta. You can also wear pride symbol face marking. There were some characters that I liked though. Dekka is a badass old lady, who cuts through all the bullshit and tells you everything directly. The Morlund trio is great as well. Stemmur the old man narrator is a gem, and Morlund is a cool ass friend.

Now the combat in this game is decent. I really like the different component breaking mechanics for enemies. It's really a great touch and makes the fights a lot more dynamic. It's not just visual too, by blowing up different components you can shut down enemy weapons, abilities and cause AOE explosions that damage surrounding enemies. Although I think they went too far with weapon variety in this one. There's like 10 different weapon types, but ain't nobody got time to use them all, so I mostly used 2 weapons and a spear. Melee combat seems to have expanded as well, with a lot of combos and movesets, but the problem is that melee is garbage, besides against some human enemies. It doesn't do too much damage, and against constantly jumping or flying machines it's useless, unless you incapacitate them in some way.

Story is alright, but it's mostly carried by the setting. The apocalypse setting has been done before, but the implications of trying to combat the end of the world using different methods and setting up the Zero Dawn program was interesting. The zenith are kinda cool, but their shtick of being ageless and a bunch of assholes feels a bit out of place.

Anyway, this game grew on me, so I have no regrets playing it for about 50 hours, although I don't think this game is for everyone. If you like the new open world Assassins Creed games, you will surely like this one.

- Ultra nice graphics
- combat is quite a bit more fast-paced and action heavy than in Horizon Zero Dawn, which I was ambivalent about
- main story is nice with some interesting surprises, but for obvious reasons not as mind blowing as in the first game
- side quests are well made, but often repetitive (go somewhere -> use Focus to find tracks or other stuff -> fight machines or humans -> rescue person or find item)

In the end it's just a bit too long and it was quite a drag to 100% it, that's why it's not a 9 or 10 for me.

Horizon Fobidden West is an excellent open-world, RPG-lite game with a gorgeous world, set in a far post-apocalyptic Western USA.

The gameplay is incredibly fun and addicting for me, and often fairly challenging. I have been likening the combat and gameplay loop to The Witcher 3, but with a focus on fast bow + arrow combat. However, it probably has more build variety, due to all the different weapong types and skills you can get. If you liked the aspect of The Witcher 3, where you hunted for materials to upgrade your gear, you will like this. Hunting for machine parts can be incredibly fun and satisfying. It is part of the reason I almost 100% this game, despite the time commitment and growing backlog. It is worth noting that this game is not nearly as much an RPG as TW3 is, however. Aloy is pretty much her own character, and even though there are a few choices to make, I am fairly certain your choices don't really change much in the world or story.

The story is pretty good, and if you liked the first one I will just say this one also has a great narrative hook, its just that it took me a few hours to get to it. The side characters felt more important and interesting in this one than the first game, too.

This game runs beautifully on PC, nixxes did a great job on the port, and I am so excited to finally have all these Sony games on PC.

A large and beautiful game.

The developers did their best with the animations and dialogues. Even in secondary quests (of which there are a lot!), characters move, gesture, and comment on recent plot events. This is extremely impressive compared to the generic "talking heads" dialogues that plague almost all modern open-world games.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect for me is the map's extreme scale. There isn't much variety or interesting going on there. It's crazy to think that the main plot takes only 20 hours, but you spent 4 times as much time completing secondary tasks and repetitive activities.

I wish developers had put their efforts into a smaller, more well-thought-out map and a larger, more in-depth main story.

I actually didn't mind Zero Dawn, while it was a bit clunky for a first game I thought it was actually pretty fun with an interesting story and was excited to see how they would expand on it. I left depressed and am now unsure if Zero Dawn was ever even that good.

- The towns and each having a distinctive feels and outfits is amazing
- I did like doing side-quests in each town with the overall goal of helping the town as a whole. It felt rewarding and like they were worth doing
- Grappling Hook sucks. When you grapple up to something it just feels slow and clunky. Also "Nah yeah just hold down the buttons and slowly pull the thing" puzzles. RIVETING
- I hate pretty much every platforming section. It feels clunky, gross, and a lot of it is "wait for thing to do thing" which I detest
- The glider is severely underwhelming. No speed, no distance, it's used in some puzzles and some combat but it's mostly a gimmick
- The game isn't fun to traverse on foot, and they make the glider essentially useless because they're terrified you'll break something, but not improving the MOUNTS? They are either too slow or too fast, the "follow the road" feature is pretty bad and they'll come to a complete stop on some tiny trees or branch objects
- Swimming. Swimming has been the bane of basically everyone's existence in video games since forever. It's not better here. The "boost" options feel slow, the oxygen bar is tiny and it becomes frustrating trying to navigate. It's not FUN swimming underwater, there's no additional gameplay and I found my eyes glazing over
-Having to press or hold R1/R2 over and over again to essentially open a door using the exact same canned animations gets so boring dude. And why do I need to attack a metal flower 3 times in order to press R1? To remove some thin IVY? I have fire, blades, razor cutters, c'mon now
- Vistas are whatever the opposite of fun is
- That new noise they added when using the focus annoys the hell outta me
- The bad guys are weird. They barely appear, and they feel almost like joke villains that feel like they have no impact on your story, despite being a huge part of it. Their boss battles are pretty awful too
- Why am I only allowed to change the time of day at Shelters? To show off the view?
- I actually quite liked most of the side-quest stories even if DOING the actual quest was boring as hell. Dialogue is on point, having options for additional lore is cool, and I found them engaging, although the animation loop gets tiring and there could be more player choice in some of them
- Cauldrons look cool, but not a big fan of most of them, especially the water one
- Speaking of quest design, the game just isn't very fun to PLAY. You're usually following someone, scanning for tracks and then following them for millennia, or doing a mediocre climbing section. Still no meaningful decisions, no branching storylines (even just for side-quests would be okay), there are far less "emotion" choices than in the first, not that they were particularly impactful anyway. The "puzzles" suck so bad, they mostly boil down to moving a box, or holding L2, tapping triangle, and then holding R2 over and over and over. And the game does not respect your time at ALL. The lake mission with the tree? The flower under the crane? That aren't even highlighted as an intractable object? Get outta here.

This entire game somehow feels more like an expansion than an actual sequel, it improves on or introduces very little (although the weapon wheel and accessibility options are pretty great). You have the same quest types, the same characters, the same basic storyline except worse because the mystery is gone and the bad guys are poorly handled. The Ruin quests can be really obtuse, the drone quests are "climb" and using them in the hologram room is slow and not worth the effort, most of the special abilities are either too situational to be used, weapon skills are interesting but again, usually situational and traps are borderline pointless, especially since they blow stealth.

It's a gorgeous game, and clearly a lot of work and effort has gone into it, but playing it is too often tediously repetitive, frustrating, and honestly, usually pretty boring. The animations are incredible, some of the character facial expressions are INSANE in what they can convey and how natural it looks, I loved a lot of the stories and the art and exploring the world. I just wish PLAYING it was better.

156hrs to 100% this game on PC. Gorgeous graphics, cool weapons, interesting story and characters. I loved that game as much as I loved Horizon Zero Down. Amazing experience from start to finish.

Good but not great, felt like more of 1 with better mechanics. Story wise better than 1 but nothing great in terms of characters, plot was decent.

Aloy's new adventure is majestic from every perspective: an incredible world, a compelling story with charismatic characters, breathtaking technical aspects, and enjoyable gameplay, though not innovative.

TECHNICAL SIDE
Graphically fantastic and incredibly smooth, Nixxes and Guerrilla have done an incredible job with Forbidden West. However, I encountered occasional graphical glitches on clothing textures and character pop-ins. Regarding bugs, I didn't encounter anything, which is impressive considering the game's length of over 70 hours in an open world setting.

STORY
The story starts slowly but gains momentum after the first few hours, becoming very interesting halfway through and ending with an intriguing cliffhanger. Every time I thought an event would unfold in a certain way, the game surprised me with an unexpected twist. Well done, Guerrilla.

GAMEPLAY
Between the skill tree, a good number of new machines to fight, and new weapons in the arsenal, there's certainly a lot to explore. However, for me, it often boiled down to the usual "equip the bow, target weak points, exploit elemental weaknesses." But if you look for it, there's variety. The only real "flaw" of this sequel is that it doesn't innovate in anything; for better or worse, it takes Horizon Zero Dawn and improves and expands on all its features. Even so, it's worth every penny and will provide plenty of fun.
See you in the Forbidden West!

I love fightin big robots. Got to fite big robots. :)

Nearly a perfect game just like the last one.
Flying around on my Bird was pure joy.
It has the same perfect character and exploration progression that Zero Dawn did.

I did not like a few of the cut scenes, especially the one in Barron Light where Aloy just stands there while people get slaughtered around her. That was really out of character and I ended up mashing the space bar just so I could do something. That happens a few other times.

My real main gripe with this game is holy fucking shit Aloy does not shut up. I had to turn the voice volume down to 0 in every cauldron because the game LITERALLY does not give you one nanosecond to figure out a puzzle on your own. The INSTANT you encounter a puzzle Aloy just starts yappin "I think I need to push this block over there to get to the higher ledge blah blah blah".
Some other times I was doing a quest and she would start yapping on what to do next as I was actively fighting big ass robots. Game would be a 100/100 with a "Shut the fuck up" option in the settings.

Everything good about the first game turned to 11. Might be the best looking game ever made. For an open world to look this good it makes no sense. I loved this game. Can't wait for part 3.
