This blog is going to be pretty short lived, because I’ve finally done it... I’ve finally acted on my threats. After 20 years of playing on Windows I’ve sold my gaming PC and gave away nearly all my gaming accounts with it, as follows:

Steam: 250+ games
Epic: 100+ games
Uplay: 30+ games
Origin: 20+ games

The only account I’ve kept is Gog, because I might fancy dipping into the indie gems and good old games I have there now and then, playing them on my Mac... though many of them might not work thanks to macOS being 64 bit only now.

That then just leaves the 31 unplayed games I have on PS4 and a handful of PS3 titles I’ve had hanging around for ages.

This might all seem completely crazy, but I‘m getting on a bit and just don’t have the energy or enthusiasm for gaming like I once did, and I actually feel quite FREEEEEEEE now that I’ve finally dumped Windows and slashed my gaming backlog to a third of what it was! And the young guy who bought my PC was happy as Leisure Suit Larry with his reasonably priced high-end hardware and instant gaming collection.

I now feel I have more headspace to enjoy relaxed gaming, and spend more time painting pictures, playing with my cat, and contemplating being turned into a can of soylent green.

A madlad in the truest sense. While I will not follow suit, I respect the decision. May you achieve the same level of chill as Bob Ross.

Bob Ross was actually on TV while I was eating dinner just now. 😂 The master provided some sage advice, too: "If you don't enjoy what you're doing, then you're doing the wrong thing."

Clearly, the decision to dump Windows and the backlog that came with it was the correct decision. Good luck with the remaining backlog!

I’m currently finding it difficult to focus on anything (in gaming and in RL) and I have 8 games on the go at once, all on PS4:

Control
ELEX
God of War (2018)
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Outlast
Prey (2017)
Ratchet & Clank (2016)
Vampyr

I’ve played at least an hour of each of these and keep flitting between them. Some of them I started at least 2 years ago (Hellblade and Prey) and God Of War is a sort of replay, as I originally completed about 70% of the game a few years back before losing my save when I forgot to back it up when upgrading to a PS4 Pro and wiping my original system to sell it.

I also have several other games that I retired after playing quite a chunk of, but am considering resurrecting, include Metal Gear Solid V, GTA V and Ghost Of A Tale.

I’m close to approaching completing my 500th game. With the UK going into lockdown again, and with me having 2 weeks off work from next weekend, I guess I’ll have more time to play games, though I’m not getting a lot of enjoyment from them at the moment... Perhaps it’s because they are all quite involving grimdark games, with the exception of Ratchet & Clank, which I’m finding a bit annoying. Or perhaps it’s because I’m just bored and tired and depressed and old?

I just picked up Cat Quest for a few quid in the Gog Halloween sales because it looked fun and cute... perhaps I’ll ignore my PS4 and play that instead. Or maybe just forget games and go see my girlfriend and play with my actual cat which she looks after now (another sad and sorry story). Hohum.

Cat Quest is cute and fun, so if you're looking for something on the lighter side (with lots of cat puns) to keep you entertained, that's not a bad choice. It took me about 11 hours to get through, and I did everything. If you just stick to the main story, I'd imagine it would be considerably less. Nothing about it is particularly revolutionary, so it's not going to change your outlook on life or anything, but it's a good time for a couple of hours.

Should be a healthy combo of Prey (2017) and time spent with your gf / cat, though I got seriously addicted to Prey myself by playing it for like 5 hours a sesh and actually talking my way out of "relationship-related activities", but I've got a grip before things turned ugly 😋

Maybe start with the shortest games to check them out of your list. Hellblade is around 8 hours long, even if you played around 1 hour per day you would be able to finish it in a week. At least that's what I did when I had crippling backlog anxiety and 0 time to play.

Hellblade is incredibly good, but also incredibly grim. I'm about halfway through and keep having to drop it. I don't enjoy the combat very much, it’s far too intense. I wish it was just a puzzle adventure game / walking simulator.

I've been having a better time with Control since discovering the 'immortal' and 'one hit kill' options. I'm such a casual these days, but the shooting in that game is just meh, baddies are The Division level bullet sponges, and I can do without continually dying and replaying.

I love the setting and atmosphere and lore though... thanks to Remedy for providing options for losers!

After completing Control, I had a break from gaming throughout December, culminating with catching COVID over Christmas and being quite ill for the last week of 2020 and the first week of 2021.

I played the gentle puzzler The Last Campfire on my iPad in my sickbed once I had got over the fever, and when feeling better I did a 3 session intense playthrough of Shadow Of The Tomb Raider which I got as part of my PS+ subscription.

Yesterday I started Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which I bought, downloaded and started playing right away after seeing it was on sale on PS Store and after watching a few in-depth reviews on YouTube.

I can tell it’s exactly what I need to play right now - a slow, deep, immersive, sympathetic, historical RPG devoid of fantasy (and power fantasy) tropes. I’m only a few hours in and already feel entwined with the lowly main character, possibly more than with any other I’ve played in an RPG. I can’t believe that I never checked it out sooner.

I took a short break from Kingdom: Come Deliverance to play and complete Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, and I’m so glad that I did - not just to clear it from my backlog, where it has been hanging around for a couple of years half-finished, but because it continued to be one of the most incredibly moving experiences I’ve had in gaming, and I don’t know why I kept putting off playing it.

So, that’s my 499th game completed. I wonder what will be my 500th? Will it be Kingdom: Come Deliverence, or will I get distracted by something else, as is my usual MO?

Anyway, here’s my review of Hellblade:

An exemplary achievement in interactive drama and a convincing representation of psychosis, one that is undeniably visually impressive but that is far more notable for its outstanding audio design.

Though the puzzle-based gameplay is at times confusing and the sporadic combat is repetitive and overly-intense (and sometimes far too unforgiving even in easy mode), it doesn't detract from the overall experience - a beautiful, terrifying, dark, moving and spine-tingling exploration of mental illness, loss, grief, horror, love, acceptance, and primitive fear. I’ve never got goosebumps so much from any game before, and a lot of that is due to the incredible performance by Melina Juergens as Senua.

Do not pass on this this game if you believe that video games can be a work of art - and if you don’t, then do yourself a favour and play it too. It may well change your mind.

I'm running a 'lottery' whereby you can help me pick my 500th game to beat, and I'll be donating to a gaming charity for the physically disabled, based on how many 'entries' it gets.

The 'winner' will also receive a special HL2B tag, as offered by Everdred.

Check it out here:

Bloody hell. I've only gone and got myself an Xbox Series S and signed up for Game Pass.

What the hell am I thinking, when I've still got 100+ games on PS3, PS4 and Mac to beat?

I only just sold my gaming PC a short while ago to cut down on my addiction!

I actually wanted a PS5 but they are impossible to get hold of in the UK, and I was missing playing Forza Horizon and Minecraft with my buddy online.

I just finished Journey To The Savage Planet on Xbox Series S, finding my way back to Earth with a completion rate of 73.6% after sinking almost 17 hours into it.

An amazing, amusing, exploration-based first person Metroidvania-ish that feels like a cross between Subnautica, No Man's Sky and Outer Worlds, but more fun and more focused than any of those. Somewhat let down by its narrow FOV and a poorly-implemented lock-on / aim assist, which became especially apparent during the rage-quittingly frustrating final boss fight, it's still a must play for fans of colourful tongue-in-cheek retro space nonsense and electrograpple hooks, and at its budget price it gives most AAA titles a run for their money. Great music too.

This is me trying to beat the final boss, which took me at least a dozen tries...

In contrast to the colourful frenetic nonsense of my previous game, I just finished the slightly calmer and darker Sea Of Solitude on Xbox Series S, a short game that I completed in 3 hours and 45 mins.

Here's my review:

I do rate this game, but I do have mixed feelings about it. It is an abstracted depiction of a personal journey through depression, touching on issues such as bullying, family problems and relationship breakdown, exploring fear, loss, anxiety, grief, guilt, loneliness and ultimately acceptance and understanding. As someone who suffers from depression these are all things that I have experienced, and the game does occasionally strike a chord, but at times the point it is trying to make, and the story it is trying to tell, just feels somewhat laboured.

Thematically and aesthetically beautiful, both visually and aurally, it does suffer somewhat from occasionally confusing gameplay and some poor voice acting. However, my main bugbear with it is somewhat harder to pin down. It just feels a bit off, like they are trying too hard, and being too literal and employing symbolism that is so obvious it feels almost cringy. I guess this makes it more accessible than many such games, which often obsfucate their narrative and message behind a wall of pretension or artiness, but it does occasionally mar the experience for me.

However, I do think it does achieve what it sets out to do and I did 'enjoy' it as a game that explores some difficult things. By the end I was appreciative of their efforts, if only because towards the end it hit pretty close to home for me... (I am Jack)

Wow hats off to you my friend for having the courage and resolve to go through with such a decision.

It's great that you can switch between relaxed AKA easy mode gaming (lol kidding), painting, playing with cat and soylent (?).

I regularly switch between gaming, travel (all domestic nowadays), reading, and watching media to keep my activities feeling varied and exciting. You're lucky to have a cat, I love them but allergies keep me from owning one sadly..

All the best to your new gaming adventures, do keep us posted!

Thanks to GamePass, I’ve recently been replaying Destiny 2 to catch up on all the expansions I missed up to now, and then jumped onto Outriders when that released, and I’m mostly enjoying it, apart from all the online shenanigans. However, I decided I wanted a break to play a shooter that’s much more focussed and old school, and less grindy, so finally got round to playing Gears of War 4, as it seemed to be short and sweet.

Here’s my review...

A spectacular, graphically impressive third-person shooter, more colourful than previous entries in the series, and mercifully featuring much less gruff and grimfaced protagonists. I’m amazed at how good it looks for a 5 year old game designed for 8 year old technology. Though I played it on an Xbox Series S, I don’t think it has any enhancements or optimisations, but it looks incredible and runs at 1080p with superb anti-aliasing and a solid 30fps frame rate.

The gameplay is standard Gears cover-shooter fare, and even though it plays it pretty safe, it’s certainly polished and playable. It’s lacking in all the RPG-lite stuff (progression, skills, and upgrades etc) that many modern shooters and action games employ, and is completely linear, but this helps keep the focus on the gameplay and its story... though unfortunately that last aspect is somewhat lacking, both in length and in depth. This doesn’t bother me too greatly as I don’t like intense shooters that far outstay their welcome, and I played it via GamePass so the cost/content ratio was not a factor to me.

The only other thing that detracts was the fact that every main character seemed to be a witty wiseass, and it did get a bit tedious at times. The arrival of the grumpy old Dad Gear helped put a a bit of a check on that. It was sad about his tomatoes though.

I’m bored of playing games.

So I’ve decided to have another stab at making them instead.

I’m currently steaming ahead with mycg, my chill platformer / metroidvania that I started in GameMaker Studio last year, after recreating it in the far superior open source Godot game engine last month. I have almost got the core platforming / spelunking gameplay down to a tee, done some cutout animations for all the movements, and have built the rudimentary systems for a basic Metroidvania - dynamic mapping, inventory, upgrades, NPC dialogue, progress saving, and the incredibly exciting obligatory 'fetch me this thing to get another thing' and 'find a key to unlock a door' quests.

See my itch.io page if you are at all interested… there’s an old abandoned adventure game I made in RPG Maker there too. It’s cute and fun.

https://owdoo.itch.io

Here’s an early dev video of me testing what I’ve done so far… doesn’t look like much, but it’s just placeholder art and is not really indicative of the intended actual game content.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to give up my day job just yet 😉
