I got this game for free on epic store. It takes only 7 golden feathers to beat the game which takes 1 hr or so to get. The only goal is to climb to the top, however you are free to explore and do whatever you want. It's meant to be a relaxing experiance, you can complete side quests for npcs, open chests, dig up cash, fish and much more. For me it was alright, it didnt hit me as hard as it hit other ppl.I wouldn't buy it to re-experiance it.

A genuinely lovely time.

A game where you play as a teenage penguin attempting to hike a mountain is just the sort of goofy fun I remember video games being like back in the late 90s and early 2000s when I was just a few years old. To add to this nostalgic feeling, the graphics are intentionally pixelated, and that beautiful styling gives this game an incredibly cosy vibe.

It helps that the gameplay, while simple, is incredibly fun too. You run, climb and glide over the island, the controls feel incredibly responsive and the challenge never gets too frustrating to deal with.

A genuine work of art that I recommend everyone play.

In previous reviews, I've briefly mentioned my admiration for works that accomplish what they set themselves out to do, even if the main idea, or in the case of video games, the gameplay, is not explored to its fullest. As they say, art is never done, it just stops moving.

You can spot A Short Hike in any top or list of "cozy games". And by the looks and vibes, you wouldn't be wrong to say that's the identity of this title. Many would also describe it as "Breath of the WIld meets Animal Crossing", which may give you a hint of how the adventure will develop.

They all fall short to properly describe this game. Some weeks ago I remember I spotted a list on Backloggd named "A Short Hike-Likes". Now I get it. A Short Hike is so, so much its own thing. There's an open environment to explore, there's fishing and cute animals to talk to. There's also the flying and the gliding, and the mountain and the rivers.

Beyond some camera issues and an awful inventory management screen, there's nothing else that bothers me. This is a wonderfully designed piece with a huge heart, and it wasn't the shortest hike at all, as it took me 8 hours and 41 minutes to finish and get all of the achievements. I'm sad I don't get to keep feeling this incredible joy of exploring such a sweet place.

- Controls feel weird, you have to use arrow keys to move around
- Camera angle sometimes gets stuck and you will have to play with that one until you jump and fly
- Basically you go there do that task, get a new ability and move on (Pretty boring for me)
- I mean if you like chill games you should try it but it's not really a story-driven game
- Also pretty fast for the price, I at least expected an hour game and not a 45 min one

this game is a really nice experience that i'd recommend to anyone. it has an interesting style with its pixelated graphics and a really nice soundtrack that reminds me of animal crossing. the characters are also sweet, and the landscape is really nice to explore.

its shortness is a double-edged sword; while on one hand it makes the game more accesible to anyone, on the other it is perhaps too short for anyone who wants to experience more of it. yes there is some additional content, but i personally didn't look forward to it and therefore did not pursue all of it to the end - i would've much rather had more things to explore.

nonetheless, i will be on the lookout for any new releases from the developer! the game was just that sweet

For what it is, I really liked this game. It was super chill and it let you explore the island pretty freely. The side quests are nice, all in all the game is very wholesome. It wasn't super special to me, but I enjoyed it for the short while, the short hike that I played it. Also playing with someone else made it even better :)

A Short Hike is a sweet, bite sized game with a focus on exploration. You play a penguin, an ironically flightless bird, who is trying to reach the top of a mountain to make a phone call while on vacation. While trying to do this, you explore an open world filled with cute and funny characters, find upgrades to your climbing and flying abilities, and also partake in the occasional minigame.

The whole game can and should be completed in one afternoon, but it'll be a game you think about for a while to come, that leaves you with a smile on your face, and maybe even a happy tear in your eye.

A Short Hike is an absolutely adorable indie game with more heart than a liberal child. The stroy of a young girl going on a short hike to talk to her mom is just flat out COZY. It is a quick game too with plenty to do, I do recommend this a great Sunday game where you can beat it in a few hours.

Starting with the good, this game is adorable, I love the color, the art style, the characters, everything about it is just flat out cute. If you enjoy adorable indie darling I do recommend it. Because from the beaches of the base of the island to the top of the mountain I feel like I could make any of those into a screen shot background.

Because this game Is so short I don't really have any negative issues with it. It ran well, was enjoyable, and made me tear up a little. Overall with one great point to the game and not one negative point I give it a solid 6/10

Now because I promise to reach a word limit for every review of 300 or more I do want to point out some of the small things that don't really matter. Like the ball game beach stick it was I am unsure if the computer will ever fail? I think it has to be human error, also I wish there was a way to keep track of the boat when you get off of it. The fishing was fine? The races were cool but when you have enough feathers to kill a horse you don't need the race shoes. Anyway small points that don't really factor into the review of the game but things that I did notice during my play through of it.

Well... that was great !
Depending on whether or not you wish to discover everything the island has to offer, the game can go from over an hour to a few hours. And it's good, the environments are charming and the art style which can feel a little weird at first fits just perfectly in the experience the game gives you.
A Short Hike is really relaxing. Everything just goes with the slow pacing of discovering the island : the music, the interactions and everything just invites you to take your time. The game is what it sells to you : just a short hike, it can be completed quite fast but that would be skipping most of the experience. I invite you to, again, take your time and talk to NPCs. There's many things to discover.
While not really being a negative point, the sense of directions can be a little confusing at times, and you can get lost quite easily.
If you're looking for a stress-free experience : don't hesitate, it's great.

Not a ton of music in the game. When it kicks in it sounds wonderful. The noises in the environment sound great. Simple stuff like leaves, snow and sand.

It's pretty simple. You're on an island for vacation and go exploring to reach the top so you can use your phone. Of course things happen along the way and you complete quests for other people on the island. Many things are optional but it's fun to help them. The rewards are often worth it.

Gameplay: 5/5
The game controls really well. Navigating the world is simple and clean. The climbing mechanic works well. Very breath of the wild. Flying is a little finicky but once you figure it out it's very satisfying.

Few if any bugs encountered during the roughly 3hr play time.

Music - 3/5 - as seems to be the case with a-lot of the games I have played recently this game had a really good zen feel to it. The music was calming and the sound scaping worked nicely. Nothing was really jarring about it and it really did well just filtering into back ground noise

Art - 4/5 - I really liked the overall look of this game. The pixel texture, the dumb guys absolutely everywhere, details thought about in every inch. There was a nice little feature in the settings too where you could decide how pixelated everything was which was a nice touch. It was just a nice look. The camera angles could be a bit odd sometimes though

Story - 2/5 - there isn't really much in terms of story, you've come to the middle of no where and are hiking to the top of the hill to get phone signal for a call. There are characters you meet on the way going about their own thing who have tasks you can complete as you go but it really is simple as that. It does help with the whole switch your brain off and chill vibes but really nothing else to it

Gameplay - 3/5 - another one where the set up is fairly basic, run around doing multiple fetch quest type errands, build stamina to climb and climb to the top. As mentioned earlier its very relaxed and isn't one thats going to be a test of skill or strategy, its very easy to take at your own pace and just go with the flow

Enjoyment - 3/5 - its a nice game. I do like the simplicity and ease of it all wrapped up nice in a a short playtime. Very chill playing

Very fun, short little game you can knock out in a single afternoon. I had a cathartic time with this game collecting sea shells and talking to the villagers while flying around and fishing to the beautiful and dynamic music that is always playing throughout your time on the Island. It is a game that can be beat in a about an hour if you're just there to run through it, but if you want to take your time with the island there's a lot of fun things to do and it just makes the pay off at the top off the peak all the more worth it.
