A very challenging survival horrorGood
- really innovative and a pioneer of a game for the survival horror genre. Amazing at the time, and still is a great game to this day
- the game takes advantage of the fixed camera to make the environment scarier. Enemies can be heard, but are out of frame when entering a room
- gives the player a tense, somber, and mysterious feeling. Despite feeling scared, you want to push on to see what the plot is about
- the environment design is beautiful. The map design is complex, but varied and diverse. The game takes you all over the place in an organic way.
- most of the puzzles are well thought out, and takes some thought to solve. It is satisfying when you do.
- there's a decent variety of enemies, which keeps things interesting.
- music comes in at the right time. Most of the game has you going around in silence, but sometimes somber music will creep in, adding to the dread and isolation
- the focus on resource management added a lot of tension to the overall gameplay
Bad
- item carrying case is a little too small. Often times, I am forced to back track or save scum just so i don't burn through resources on enemies, or I'm forced to backtrack to storage box to retrieve a key item. This wastes a lot of time and is tedious. By default, I store it all in there, cause it's never clear when you need to use it.
- the fixed camera makes the movement controls pretty awkward in some combat situations.
- most of the dialogue is pretty bad
- some puzzles are a little too cryptic. Given there is not hint system, it can be very annoying to get stuck wandering around.
- the map isn't detailed enough. There are so many different kinds of locks and keys that you easily lose track of which door you can unlock when you finally find the key. This could've been fixed if they allowed player to label doors and notes for individual rooms.
- ribbons for saving isn't a good idea, because this screws people who can only play in short bursts. Maybe cause of work, or on short bus rides.

It's great when you visit a classic & it really does hold up as well as everyone says that it does. The first few hours here are some impeccably stressful ebbs & flows, really masterful stuff. But my playthrough (which involved lots & lots of getting lost) took nearly 17 hours, & after about the 10th, it really stopped being scary. My overzealous resource management (& the fact I sprinted away in terror from all of even the few Crimson Heads I'd left, thus not wasting any resources on them) meant that while I spent the first 5 hours rationing every bullet & swearing at every missed shot, by hour 8 I'd suddenly ended up with a king's ransom in bullets & ink ribbons. By the end of the game, I still had over 40 ink ribbons (but I never was a huge savescummer anyway outside of immersive sims, or anywhere where it's otherwise intended play), & bizarrely, over 110 handgun bullets. I'm not sure at what point my little resource management equation tipped so far in my favour, & maybe it's my fault for both picking the easiest difficulty (I'm bad at videogames!) & being so resource-hoard-y, but the game really left me without much terror all throughout its final half; I'd mastered too much by that point to get scared or stressed.
But the opening hours are incredible, & I see why this is so, so, so beloved. I'll happily jump my difficulty up to hard next time, now that I know how to avoid Crimson Heads, & when to tactically save. Hopefully then it'll remain as enjoyably stressful throughout as it did through my first playthrough's opening hours.

Absolutely awesome remake. There's nothing to argue about here.I just disagree with the stereotype consisting in seeing it as the best remake ever made. In my opinion, a good remake doesn't try to 'replace' the original game. It takes the blueprint and does its own thing. That's not the case with what we called at the time 'REbirth', and it wasn't even the point . Mikami himself thought the original game was too old and wanted to re-do it, not in a really different way, only a better one (in his view). He did it, with unspeakable talent, but at the end of the day REbirth is more of a gigantic director's cult than a true attempt to create something new.
So for sure, we have a great game here, but I can't help being sad with the way it rewrote history. And I'm very surprised when I read that REbirth served as a basis for other RE remakes. In my opinion, it's quite the opposite.
Wait, did I say it's a great game?

Resident Evil 1 is a great reminder of what gaming was and the hardships of poorly crafted user interfaces. Currently only played the Jill scenario (played the Chris scenario on Wii many years ago). It's a whole new game compared to the original, and the mansion layout is 60% the same, I would say. Personally, I still prefer the classic game, but this one is a very strong entry in the series, and one of the best.8 out of 10.

the absolute gold standard for videogame remakes— the game that kickstarted Capcom as possibly the greatest to do it in that category— Resident Evil Remake is fucking phenomenal— an elaborately staged, brutal as hell, hilariously campy, and scary as fuck game even to this day— takes the original game and makes it so much more accessible without removing a shred of what made it a classic— I could never beat it as a kid but now I see myself replaying it over and over again— really my only problems with it are that some of the inherent progression flaws of the original game carry over to this in new ways (I like that exploration is encouraged but there were so many points where I just had no fuckin' idea where to go), especially compared to something like the original RE2 and even its own Remake that both still hold up to this day as a perfect mix of player freedom and deliberate design— but still, even after just one completed playthrough I feel so much more capable of doing it again and even better— a masterpiece!Updated 10 Months Ago

UPSIDES- The GameCube Remake enhances the PS1 original to make it more serious without losing its structure
- Controls are jank, but still adaptable
- Gorgeously decrepid background renders
- The Crimson Heads and Lisa Trevor were bloody genius additions
- Many different ways to play the Main Game (even if its means having to replay it several times)
DOWNSIDES
- Camera angles and controls can sometimes make it annoying to pick up items
- Good songs, but lacks the musical ambience in certain areas (Not to mention, the Remastered Version butchered the OST)
- Chris' Story involves a lot more backtracking due to his Limited Inventory
- In-game Animations can sometimes be too laborious as to affect the gameplay
(For example, I wasted a precious Magnum Bullet on a Hunter coming in through the window because its animation hadn't finished)
OVERALL
- I stick with playing the Remake because it truly is the definitive way to play Resident Evil 1. The PS1 Original has its cheesy charm, but I think it goes too overboard with it, to the point where it may actually be bad. But the GameCube Remake fixed everything and gave it the perfectly foreboding look it desperately needed. Not to mention the absolutely brilliant idea of the Crimson Heads and Lisa Trevor which gave the game even more tension and substance. While it may still be a bit jank, there really is no better way to play this horror classic.

For my first experience with the series, REmake 1 leaves an incredible first impression. I never expected to feel the amount of tension in games that I did with this one. With how the controls are clunky, the zombies AREN'T mere fodder for you to blast through and instead are carefully-placed obstacles that you need to make the decision on whether or not they are worth spending valuable ammunition on or if you can consistently juke away from them without needing to expend anything, the game has this overarching feeling of fear all throughout. And not the dehabiliating "cry in the corner and go pick something else" feeling of fear, but more an adrenaline rush that compels you to stay on your toes at all times. For that reason, this game is definitely something you've gotta check out.Updated 2.5 Years Ago

oh my gaaahdWhile being a remake of the original, it still has a decent amount of stank to it that makes parts of it frustrating but looking past that, Resident Evil is a damn fine survival horror game and has cemented its place as a cult classic for damn good reason.
This game on the GameCube looks amazing! All of the backgrounds and set pieces look fantastic and really help make the mansion and the surrounding area's feel horrific and desolate when the game wants to make you feel scared. And while the game uses tank controls and fixed camera angles, it uses them in a way that helps build tension when you walk around corners and just in general gives some of the area's fantastic looks due to how well the camera angles are. As a horror game as well it does feel very spooky to walk around the game and does its job of scaring the player phenomenally.
I also really liked the character's (specially Barry) and the general lore/plot of the game. It start's off as kind of generic with you only seeing zombies in a mansion but as you start to pick up clues and files hidden around the game you start to piece together what happened and the horrific events that befell the people surrounding this plot. I won't spoil what happens (If you somehow don't already know) but it's some grisly tales for sure.
The only issues I have is that the inventory system is pretty dumb. I can understand only being able to carry a certain amount of items but the game gives you no way to discard an item. If you are full on items you either want to keep or cannot get rid of, you have to trek all the way back to an item box just to deposit them. Which is also made more of a pain when a LOT of the game time is spent watching animations of door's opening. The game can also be brutally vague and expects you to remember a lot to solve its puzzles and for someone who has memory problems, I ended up having to look up solutions and help due to me not remembering important parts of the game that it expected me to.
In Summary: Barry.
Gameplay - 3/5
Music - 4/5
Appearance - 5/5
Story - 4/5
Difficulty - Moderate (Main difficulty is trying to figure out wtf to do)
Skeleton Rating: 1/5 - there has to have been a skeleton somewhere but all I could see was fleshy dudes, uncool.

This game was a great introduction to the Resident Evil franchise. Controls at first seemed very outdated and that I would never get used to them. I finished the game while still having a little difficulties with the controls, but it was nothing unbearable. Inventory was kind of a redundant, but I think that that is what gives Resident Evil the lore of a survival game. You take what you think you will need and you learn what is important and what isn't. Saving is the same way. You can't save whenever you want and are only given a limited about of ink ribbons that you use to save. Use them all up and you'll have to find more in order to save. I had about 5 ribbons left over my first playthrough so I don't think that they're that big of an issue, but if you are the type of person who has to save a lot then you're going to have a difficult time. Some of the puzzles.... were a nightmare. I had to look up some walkthroughs with certain puzzles. Some of the puzzles make you think, "how the hell was I supposed to figure that one out!?". Most the time after completing a puzzle you were rewarded with an item that helps you progress in the game and you get that "aha" moment. I really enjoyed this part of the game that was one of the driving forces in me completing this game. I still have to play as Chris and I feel that it will be a completely different experience than Jill so that keeps the replay value in my opinion very high! Overall, this game was an amazing introduction into the series. This was a solid building platform for the Resident Evil series and makes me excited to explore all the other games that I have yet never played! I recommend this game if you love survival horror/ puzzles/ some rpg element games. If you don't like to think about anything and don't care for any storylines then stay away from this title. Other than that I feel there is something for everyone in this game!Updated 3 Years Ago

There really isn't to much to complain about this game besides the really tanky controls that came with part of that era. The vividly detailed dark and eerie backgrounds, combined with the haunting soundtrack/sounds create and insanely dreadful atmosphere. The creaking of the floor boards, the sounds of zombies moaning, and the reflections/shadows really made it stressful at times as you couldn't fully see around certain corners. The pacing feels a little slow at times, but it does a fantastic job at creating suspense as you wander around the mansion solving puzzles to advance, and never knowing if something lies in wait. For it's time Resident Evil is an absolute gem, and even with the tank controls it holds up pretty well (atleast for the HD Remaster on GC). Strongly recommend playing through this game, will have to play another game with Chris next time around.Updated 3.5 Years Ago

The remake of the first Resident Evil was more important than more people might have figured at the time. On one hand it did look better than any other entry by far, and constructed some additional side-elements such as believable extensions to the interior/exterior landscapes, more horrifying details to monsters, gave it a cutting-edge audio design, remixed puzzles to make fans of the original need to think again, and even added the Crimson Heads, which make the zombies, already more scary than before, notably scarier as they can raise a second time, if you don't dispose of the bodies correctly. This makes you need to choose your paths carefully. But what made this game important were two other elements. The first of the two is the introduction of Lisa Trevor, a character far more hideous than anything seen before, not only physically but far more emotionally disturbing; she has a backstory and it's a brutally depressing one, and this allows the players to despise the humans responsible for everything far more than they would in the original or in RE2, where all of the horrors were caused by bad people making mistakes, versus bad people purposely causing widespread destruction. The other, more important important element of this entry is that it allows the player to take the events of this earlier story seriously. While the original Resident Evil was indeed very scary it was also marred with an incomprehensible amount of unintentional comedy, from the coincidental plot-twists to the atrocious dialogue and voice acting, and because of this, once the horror wears off, the game can only be played as a zombie comedy. This game contains a vastly more intense atmosphere, the dialogue is sensible and the voice acting is good, the music doesn't contain anything sounding like auto-tuned fart sounds, and everything physical feels more grounded in reality (well, sans the hanging casket part – that was just silly, but legitimately scary as well). Resident Evil 2 is easy to take seriously, as are parts 3 and CODE: Veronica, and it's nice to be able to take the first one seriously for a change as well.Updated 5 Years Ago

REmake is a game that still holds up today, partially because of its great overall design, and partially because of the static backgrounds. I first played this back in the mid-'00s, and where many games from that era are showing their age, or don't match up with the nostalgia, REmake is every bit as good as it was the day I first booted it up.The level design builds on the original Resident Evil, which already had a cool mansion to begin with. REmake greatly expands upon it, with all new rooms and areas. Even old fans will need to rethink old puzzles, as the game "Master Quest"s things up a bit, sometimes to deliberately mess with those veteran players.
The game is brilliantly creepy. Every room (caves notwithstanding) is rich with detail, the perfect amount of light to make you nervous, masterful camera angles, and a haunting audio accompaniment. It takes everything great and spooky about the original and turns it up to 11. The occasional jump scare will get you good, but it's not overplayed to the point of annoyance. It's just sporadic enough to always catch you when you least expect it.
There are two main scenarios, one playing as Jill Valentine, and one playing as Chris Redfield. There are differences in these characters and who they meet and how they play. But the overall game is mostly the same. Either way, be prepared from some inventory management, and a decent amount of backtracking and circumnavigating. As things change in the mansion, you'll have to find new ways to meet or avoid challenges, remembering to conserve your supplies whenever you can - but not being afraid to use them when necessary.
REmake is one of the best horror games out there. The tank controls will take a little getting used to, and you may never be able to walk a straight line down a hall, but you'll get better with them as you play. And play you should. Hey, worst case scenario, you resort to a walkthrough but still get to experience the tingle-inducing atmosphere that pours out of this thing like ghost champagne.

I'm a huge fan of the original Resident Evil games on the PS1, and this started out like pure bliss. The background art is fantastic, the sound and music are so atmospheric. The original Resident Evil featured some of the worst voice acting in a video game ever....but it fell into the category of "so bad that's it's funny." This game unfortunately did not for me at all. The voice acting was just bad, the script just didn't do anything for me. The endings really disappointed me as well. The game basically just ends, all the ending felt way too abrupt. Seeing as this was a remake, I feel like they should have really expanded with the endings, and I would have personally loved if they had made the dialogue more believeable this go around instead of trying for what the original did. Aside from those complaints, if you are a true Resident Evil fan, you'll love playing this game.Updated 10.5 Years Ago

Official IGN Review

I played through and beat the original Resident Evil -- several times, in fact. So I had my concerns about whether or not this GameCube remake, outstanding visual and audio presentations aside, would really be worth the effort again. The good news, though, is that it is. Even if Capcom had not changed a single gameplay-related element, Resident Evil remake would have been an amazing action-adventure -- spookier than ever before and totally worth the trip. But there are new additions, and lots of them, from the different mansion layouts to the new defensive moves, the new enemies, the gruesome original bosses and storyline extras, the 10 different endings, and so much more. The one thing that hasn't changed, my biggest complaint, is the control system. It's still digital for reasons unknown. You can use control 'Type C' so that characters can run and turn at the same time, a nice addition, but overall the control hasn't advanced much from the original. This is disappointing, of course, but it hardly ruins the experience. The play is still very fun and very challenging. Sometimes too challenging, perhaps. It's a hard game. You'll have to invest some time into it and indeed, on the most difficult setting, be prepared for some long nights. Capcom has extended the replay value of the adventure quite nicely, but in doing so has also included some rather troublesome gameplay mechanics and objectives, the biggest of which are the limiting inventory system, some of the out of whack puzzles which seem to make no sense, and some of the forced routes through the mansion. In some cases, doorknobs actually fall off doors so that you can't go back the same way you came in, forcing you to go around, and around, and around again.
One of the many bloodthirsty zombies in the game.
But if those are the drawbacks, sign me up. The graphics -- totally revamped, enhanced and tweaked -- are the prettiest on GameCube yet and indeed as of this game's release, the most impressive I've seen in any game on any console. Beautiful art mixes with outrageous technology for environments that look nearly photo realistic and yet animate accordingly too, cast shadows, and more. Characters, high polygon and wonderfully constructed, animate with an eerie realism, blood and bone particles splatter in a disgusting, too gruesome fashion, and every corner presents a new scare. The audio portion of the game is just as high in caliber, crisp and clear, allowing nightmarish moans and screams and everything in between. It's just a very complete package in this regard.
So there are a couple of issues, sure. It's not a perfect game. But Resident Evil is easily the scariest, most atmospheric videogame I've very played. It's the only one I've ever been afraid to play alone. It's a triumph as a stand-alone adventure and a major accomplishment as a remake. Every gamer -- whether you've played the original or have never heard of the franchise -- should pick this up for their GameCube. It's one of the must-haves that you'll cherish not only as a truly fantastic, spooky videogame, but as a technical feat and prize that you can show your friends who still doubt the power and capabilities of Nintendo's next-generation console in the hands of the right developer.
Stop reading now. Turn your computer off, buy this game, and enjoy. The wait is over.
