The first game is barely a game and the second game is fine.

The first game sucks. The 2nd runner occasionally feels and looks amazing, but the technical wear and tear really destroyed it on the 360. The worst offence at awful porting was the final final boss of the 2nd runner. There the framerate fluctuated between fast to about 5 frames per second. I had to pause the game for half a minute to let the game catch up and become playable again. Then I got to play for a minute and then it was crawling again.

Lower score due to being a subpar port. Nonetheless, still one of the best mecha games.

The first one was okay. The second one... what a mistake to put hard mode on the first time. Really unfair. Maybe the game is super easy on easy or normal, but I never want to touch the 2nd runner again. Aside from that, good stories, soundtrack and graphics (for the time they came out).

I did not notice much of an upgrade with the HD collection. Basically the same games, still a lot of fun for both games.

These aerial brawlers cleaned up nicely ten years later. Both Zone of the Enders titles do interesting things, but The 2nd Runner is a forgotten classic that holds up unquestionably better than the first game in the series. In that respect, the package value takes a hit overall – commit to this for one great game hoping you’ll enjoy both.
