Okay, so the game is competent. Controls are a bit floaty but they do result in some bits of satisfying movement, although nowhere near as much as something like Titanfall 2, Shadow Warrior 3 or Turbo Overkill, the guns are definitely... there. I had to turn NPC volume off because of how frequently annoying they kept shouting stuff and the soundtrack is pleasing. But... is that all you want your game to be? Competent? In the end, it feels like yet another soulless "Indie" title and another low point in Indie Shooters in general. I'm not saying all Indie games I've played are bad, but so many I've tried are just copycats and clones of one thing or another, visually ripping off a certain aesthetic and overall, I find that a lot of them from what I've previewed just want to hang on to the past and just play the hits, not attempting new things. And this game is yet another in a flood of aesthetic rip offs. People, if you really wanted a fast paced wall running FPS Game, you could have played the three former titles I mentioned above. This just feels like it's just a shell of the other games former self. All the rooms and enemies look the same. They're all heavily armored troops and in general all you're going to see is bright neon rooms that don't look interesting or memorable. The graphical aesthetic just doesn't look good and has no clue what it wants to attempt. Even with the illustrations between chapters, I had no idea what the story was visually. I guess some woman wants to go outside after being locked in this complex so she kills a bunch of people? It's everything I tend to hate now with FPS Games. Soulless gameplay that makes you have this artificial type of fun that doesn't feel satisfying, lack of story with no idea how to engage the player so they just throw random nonsense at the wall and nothing sticks, visuals that look insanely generic, boring, without flare and won't be remembered by anyone the next day and overall, it's just forgettable. It's depressing that Indie Shooters have become a unwarranted celebration of visual vomit and nostalgia, when what they should be doing is keeping up with the times and not flooding the market with the same crap over and over again. I can understand there's an audience for these types of games and games like this should be put out for players who want choice, but when Severed Steel is just another dull title with nothing to offer, what is there to even offer the player?
Indie titles should really look towards other more interesting games that are coming out, whether they be the big budget stuff or something in the Indie landscape that is making waves. We should have a balance of interesting titles that exceed expectations and have experiences you can't find in the big budget/AAA space. In general, we should be avoiding copying games like this because 1. They have nothing new to offer the player. 2. The developers clearly don't care at the end of the day if their product will be good or not and 3. We have to avoid repeating ourselves and giving us the same McDonalds Big Mac Experience every time. I want games whether they're big or small to be like a great dining experience and whether I'm eating a burger, a donair, spaghetti, pizza or sushi, that at the end of the day I feel good inside for spending time on it.
Again, it's not a terrible game by any means but the game just doesn't do anything new that you haven't seen before. I just hope in the future more developers will look more into building new exciting experiences instead of just rehashing the same crap every single time because at this point I'm beginning to get some burnout. If you want a game like this then get Turbo Overkill which yes, it does have derivative elements, but it makes it feel refreshing and brand new. Unless you're EXTREMELY desperate for a new FPS Game to play, thankfully the game is pretty short and doesn't take too much time to beat. But there are so many better games you could be playing right now.

A fun and relaxing short game with a very cohesive overall vibe (between music, art design, character design, sets, etc.). I think it takes a lot of inspiration from SUPERHOT, but does something new and fun feeling with the mechanical ideas from that game and as a result the whole game feels like an extended Matrix trilogy fight sequence, which is quite fun. The story doesn't really make sense to a casual player, but it seems to be of secondary importance. All in all, pretty glad I played this!Updated 8.5 Months Ago

weird feeling in the moves, despite them being quite good at its implication in gameplay. mainly feels a little too soft for a game, but its the only big flaw. theres also some stuff with the camera on certain places but not a big deal.so much fun in the weapon change and the non weapon attacks. visually engaging and in tune with the thematic

7.5/10 Severed Steel throws a lot of wild mechanics into a blender but manages to produce something coherent, highly enjoyable, and endlessly replayable. It may be all core gameplay loop and nothing else, but when the core gameplay loop is this well-designed, engaging, and stylish, you’d have to be really pedantic to let its minor flaws drag down what is otherwise a fun, chaotic experience.

This game has amazing and fun game mechanic. Although it's more like a short indie game almost without story or progress. Yes the gameplay feels great but when going through campaign there is no new ideas or features and you're just doing the same things again and again. Also music is decent enough. It's a great game to have fun in arena shooter but nothing else.

This game is life itself, injected into your veins while you race at the speed of fucking light down narrow corridors, vaulting an enemy and popping a bullet into their now bloodied cranium. I imagine this is what cocaine feels like or speed maybe, I don't take drugs (okay maybe once) so I'll leave it up to you. I have to say HOW MUCH I love this games movement systems, and how it encourages fast play and constant enemy engagement with health regen tied to it and weapons with limited ammo necessitating the need for finding another instantly. But it also provides a handicap of sorts for those that can't play at those comically insane speeds with the Time Slowdown. That feeling of chaining together jump into vaults over a shielded enemy and pumping a slug into him upside down is a chaotic wonder and never got old. Every single bullet feels impactful, much in line with how Superhot was all those years ago, the game rewards you for precision.
The resurgence of the "boomer shooter" subgenre is a fantastic relief man. Starting with Doom's 2016 reboot and hitting new levels of insanity with New Blood's Ultrakill. Severed Steel slaps those games together, with all their craze and with a little less blood, and becomes a new kind of movement shooter. Despite it's short campaign length, it becomes a lasting experience I'll soon want more of. And it seems post launch support has been grand, with a plentiful amount of post story content in the form of Firefight and NG+.
A wholly impressive showcase, I'll most definitely be playing Greylock's next title.
9/10.

There needs to be a term for 'indie games with a fun core gameplay loop but underdeveloped content to base it around'. This game is one of those. It's an FPS lovechild of the incestuous relationship between F.E.A.R., Red Faction, and the color Neon. You shoot enemies in a jungle gym of platforms, walls, glass windows, and stairs arranged in nonsensical arcade-y fashion best fit to facilitate fun traversal than look realistic. And the traversal is pretty fun, you have a lot of options. You can jump, double jump, wall run, slide, dive, kick, wall kick, and slow time at your leisure, in mostly any order. You only have one weapon with limited ammo, and you don't take any damage while sliding or diving. So the name of game is chaining together a bunch of actions to stay invulnerable while killing and enemies and picking up their weapons. There's enough variety in the enemies to require some quick thinking too. Shield guys need to be dealt with up close or with explosives. Flying guys have more health and kill you fast. Heavy guys need to be shot in the gas tank on the back or they will never die. For such a short campaign there's plenty to hold your attention.
There's also the fact the levels are fully destructible. An early arsenal addition lets you blast through almost any wall, floor, or ceiling. This makes the level progression super dynamic, as you can expand some ammo of your arm canon thing to cut a hole in the floor and drop in your adversaries unexpectedly. In a game with a fleshed out stealth system this would be something else. But as is it's still a great addition that spices up the way you move through the level. You can even use it as a offensive weapon, it does a lot of damage.
I have a few issues with the gameplay as a whole though. First off, the sound design isn't fully up to the task for this type of experience. While the gun sounds and enemy dying in horrible pain sounds are great, the player character makes almost no sound. For all the running, sliding and diving I was doing I thought it would make sense to hear some sneaker Foley or something. Mirror's Edge is a good example for what I think it should sound like. Second, while the movement options are good, they often feel a bit floaty and out of your control. Many of the moves can't be cancelled, and I never got a good feeling of contact on the surfaces I was moving on. I pressed the correct buttons and sometimes my character did what I want, other times I missed a ledge and it wasn't super clear why. In other words the platforming doesn't have a good weight to it.
That might have something to do with my other issue, the general aesthetics. I'm not one to say graphics are all that important in games, but the visual direction here seems misguided. The fact that enemies have a bright border around them constantly is good sign the environment is too visual noisy. Because someone on the dev team really *really* loves neon. It's on every corner of every rectangle in this thing. Pair that with large levels and you get a bizarre image that looks technically interesting but sort of incoherent. It's not bad in every level, sometimes it works. But the large levels are so layered and cluttered with lights I felt myself overly relying on the slow down mechanics to search for enemies in my field of view. It all amounts to somewhat weakening what could have been a great precise twitch shooter to something where I just sort of spam all my moves and it ends up working. The slow-mo is a little too generous with it's time, and I think that's to combat how hard the combat would be without it. Fun gameplay overall, but I never got into a flow state.
There is a story going in-between missions, but I couldn't recap a single fact about it. I appreciate the attempt at having a proper campaign, but it's mostly just arcade levels layered back to back with little in regards to unique objectives. Mostly you find something to shoot or stand on and let the game give you another objective of the same type. The only thing the game varies is the level layouts, they're all large but there was some attempt at varying the type of places you traverse. The train level was the most unique in my mind, I wish there were more dynamic ones like that.
Overall a fun game, but quite short and weak for a proper campaign. Other indie games have a similar get-up, with fun mechanics but a nothing-burger story and under baked visuals. Problem is, the gameplay here wasn't enough to elevate me to 'movement shooter' Valhalla. I wasn't holding back a grin while flinging through the air kicking poor NPCs off ledges. I appreciating the design of the game had a decent time ripping through it, but it was little easier than I thought and I never felt motivated to master it's systems. It's definitely fun for a romp, but I would've preferred a tighter, more fleshed out experience. Trepang2 looks more like the F.E.A.R. spiritually successor I'm looking for, hopefully it turns out well.

Severed Steel got a lot of hype surrounding it and i have no clue why that is. I played trough the entire game in about 3 hours. Most of that playtime i did not use slowing down time since i did not know it was in the game and i had no clue how to use it not that i cared much. I did not like a good amount of things in this game but at least the story was decent. To me every turned out just mediocre. From the level design to the game play but at least the gun play was well done and satisfying. Overall this was not a game for me even though i had some sort of hype to play it since people kept saying it is good. But i think this game is an average shooter that to me feels special to someone else but me. Also there was no voice acting which i guess is normal for an indie shooter that seems kinda lazy. Anyways not a good game in my opinion but also a game i found not to be for me i guess.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

A very fun shooter that focuses on gameplay over anything else. Would've liked to see a bit more effort in the story (didn't expect much, but Doom 2016 did this style perfectly and it shouldn't be hard to replicate), and the movement mechanics were pretty awkward at times, but the slo-mo and terrain destruction mechanics made this game stand out from mediocrity. The roguelike mode is also pretty cool. Slightly overpriced, but definitely worth playing.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

Campaign was a lot of fun and the objectives felt nice and varied enough. The weapons sort of felt like Dead to Rights 1 and 2 where you just use all the ammo and then can't use the weapon unless if picked up again. Combat was very satisfying and the length of the campaign fit the game well enough mainly because I can picture these objectives getting very dull if done for 6 hours on repeat.Updated 2.5 Years Ago
