Yes, it's kinda repetitive and the collectibles are boring and tedious to collect, but the game atmosphere is awesome, i'll be playing Assassin's Creed 2 now! (or Bloodlines, idk)

The start of an amazing trilogy. However, the first in the series has its faults.

Good

- Graphics are great, environment depict the colonial ages nicely.

- Climbing all over buildings and racing across roof tops is entertaining.

- Voice acting is good.

- The cities are lively and creates a realistic atmosphere. Especially the constant awareness you must have in order to avoid guards. The interesting to see the citizens react to your actions.

- Silent assassinations are satisfying.

- The plot is unique. The game makes the player wonder what is going to happen with the ties between the past and the present day assassins and Templars.

- The story is great. The depth of the plot sets the foundations for a great trilogy.

Bad

- Altair (main character) cannot swim. In fact, he dies as he falls in water. As an assassin, it just does not make sense.

- Missions can get repetitive. Find view points, locate and complete investigations, return to bureau. Rinse and repeat.

- Minor glitches in some parts of the game. Controls can be a bit imprecise while leaping between objects and during combat.

- The present day cut-scenes with Desmond and the animus, could have been given more emotion. The characters just seem emotionless except the doctor. Also, there is not much space you can explore in the present day world. All there is, is your bedroom and the animus room.

- It is difficult to target a specific enemy when they come in large groups.

- Lack of manual aim for throwing knives makes it impossible to throw knifes at archers on roof tops from the ground.

Es un juegazo, algo repetitivo pero nada que no valga la pena para disfrutar tan intrigante concepto como el de 2 sociedades secretas que luchan una contra la otra para llevar a cabo su visión del mundo, nada más que agregar, saludos.

It's extremely repetive even at a very early stage. It's not that bad a game, it's just boring a lot of the time. Its very mediocre in many ways, placing itself in-between in most ways. The fights, for example, are a bit like hack and slash and most can be won just by hitting the same button again and again. Yet, you will still need to think a bit over how to approach the figth to win them when there are for example several enemies, just not enough to make it a tactical or skill-needing figthing game. So it's neither real hack and slash, nor gives you the freedom to make advanced moves, it's just a bit anoying in-between. In the same way, an assassination game should have some element of sneak, acrobatic skill or tactic approach, but most of the time, you will find it boring to slowly walk through until finaly you just ram through and find out that you could just have done that from the beginning, again it places itself in an annoying in-between. While you carry out a lot acrobatic stunts, "you" don't really do anything. Unlike older platforms games, the game does most of the things for you. Unlike an old platform classic like Super Mario 64 or Tomb Raider, you don't need to practice your skills and calculate how far to jump, find out just how much to pull the controller to get over the small bridge without falling down or anything like that. The game will make sure you don't fall down and almost always make the jump, and even if you don't, it doesn't really matter. Assassins Creed is a good example of how much many modern games hold your hand, leaving out all the fun of having to focus and using all your skills to win. Its repetitive and drags simple things out instead of giving real challenges. There are so many better games out there for you to use your money and time on.

Assassin's Creed comes to PC, five months after its console release. It is dubbed the "Director's Cut" with additional content which just meant different and new missions compared to the console version such as throwing people into market stands instead of just sitting down and eavesdropping all the time, which was nice. Another nice feature that came with the PC port is being able to play this game at 60fps instead of being capped to 30fps like on the PlayStation 3 (and maybe even Xbox 360?).

Onto the game itself. Storyline: It was a decent one, fairly basic and a lot of open-ended answers such as why Abstergo is so fixated on getting that Apple of Eden, game left on a cliff hanger after you find pentagrams and other inscriptions on the wall and floor of the room you're trapped in. Altair's story was quite interesting though and the twist in the plot was kind of foreshadowed but still a surprising one, that gets some good points in my books. Obviously this is all a set-up for Ubisoft to have an excuse to release a sequel. Gameplay: Fairly repetitive, go to this city, complete these objectives, assassinate this person and repeat. I completed the game 100% which means doing every single investigation alongside the core objectives to progress forward and also collect all the additional flags along with saving every citizen. Would've been nice to get a cool reward for it though but no. It was basically just a side quest if you really enjoyed the game or are a completionist like me. The controls were a bit funky along with the physics. On the PC, you have the choice of playing with Mouse & Keyboard or your Xbox 360 controller, I picked the second option but it did take some setting up to do. Do not play this game above 60Hz/fps otherwise you may experience weird physics due to the framerate being tied to the physics. Even at 60fps though, the game was sometimes still buggy.

The tutorial funnily enough was probably one of the hardest parts to get through in the game. Not because the tasks you were given were difficult, it's because you might have a chance of the game randomly breaking. First time I played through it, the guy that I grabbed and threw decided to fly away and never come back, stuck in this loop of repeatedly failing the mission straight away. Second time, I silently assassinated a guy and he flew across the entire room out of bounds so the other soldier that is meant to discover the body couldn't as he was stuck behind an invisible wall. Third time was the charm and allowed me to complete the game. The combat was simple but fun, having to know when to counter, when to attack with different choices of attacking the enemy: strong sword attack, light sword combo attacks or silent assassination with that hidden blade of yours. You can dodge, block or counter an attack which also gave the player more freedom in combat. Gotta give some points there as well. As for the overall movement, it was a bit tricky and confusing at times. You're trying to get Altair to grab onto this clearly grabbable ledge and he just decides to stare at it, which is more frustrating if you're in pursuit away from enemies. Sometimes he might jump onto ledges you don't want during free-run or just jump straight off a building into water.

Overall, it was a good game. Decent port and I had a fun time playing it, very invested in the game. The soundtrack was also quite good especially when you assassinated your target and that music accompanies the chase when you're in high profile mode. If you can get it for cheap then I recommend getting it, but be prepared to have to fix the game a little bit, and don't forget to turn your internet off. If you're online playing this game, you might experience stuttering whilst playing due to the game trying to connect repeatedly to non-existing online servers.

I LOVE the progression in the game. Starting out without anything really and re-ingratiating yourself to the Creed to where Malek, the one you left to die in the prologue, turns around and helps you in the end beat Al Mualim.

Al Mualim as the Villain is great, kinda wish it wasnt spoiled for me tho.

Combat was the biggest snooze fest for me. sitting there holding RT with hidden blades waiting to counter was pretty boring tbh, kind of changes my perspective on the complaints about current games making you a "One Man Army".

LOVE the parkour and freedom it gives you.

Overall i would say a 8.2/10 - Solid game with potential to change after playing other titles.

Assassin's Creed is good. The first game in the series fleshes out the basic mechanics of the game well, and provides a fun and engaging gameplay loop. However, Altair is not a particularly charismatic protagonist, and the depth of the game is limited in service of making the gameplay mechanics solid.

The first in the series and my first Assassin's Creed game! Really enjoyed this game back in the day, and it got me hooked into the whole Assassin's Creed series.

The setting is the Holy Land in the 12th century during the time of the crusades. The world building is extremely well done, and the story pulls you in, as you carry out your missions as Altair the Assassin. Move across the rooftops and plan your attacks carefully, always making sure you have a good escape route!

Climb towers to unlock new sections of the map and enjoy views across the city, diving headfirst into a hay cart afterwards being one of the most amazing moves in your repertoire!

I really like the story of this one because it definitely sets the scene for the rest of the series. I also like Desmond for some reason, he's just A Guy that got pulled into this whole disaster and it feels relatable (despite the circumstances). But you can also tell that this is the very first game of the series because the controls are extremely frustrating and unpolished. I know you jump on random objects in pretty much every Assassin's Creed game but this one is the worst.
It redeems itself with the story so I'd recommend playing through that, but don't attempt to 100% it. The collections are an absolute slog to try and get through. Even while having a map I got so lost as to which flags I had already gotten, and I had to go around the Kingdom at least twice because I missed one. Some of the achievements were rough as well. I had to restart my playthrough because I missed a single dialogue option with Lucy and missed an achievement.
Overall I enjoyed my time with this game and I may replay it in the future, but I definitely won't be going for 100% again anytime soon.

Completing Assassin's Creed to 100% was an incredible journey for me. The story of Altaïr is genuinely captivating, showcasing his transformation from a cocky, disrespectful assassin to a humble, dedicated member of the Creed. This character development, set against the vivid backdrop of the Third Crusade, drew me in.

The historical cities of Damascus, Acre, and Jerusalem felt alive and immersive, making me feel like I was part of that world. However, the gameplay had its rough edges. The parkour system, though innovative, often felt clunky and imprecise, leading to some frustrating moments. Combat, while initially exciting, became repetitive and sometimes unresponsive.

Despite these issues, the game's simplicity has a certain charm. The blend of stealth and action, especially during assassination missions, creates a tense and engaging atmosphere. The world's design and attention to some historical detail add depth to the experience.

Ultimately, Assassin's Creed left a lasting impression on me. The story and world design more than made up for the gameplay's shortcomings.

What a piece of garbage. At its high points, the game was manageable at best, still painful but you could survive it. But most of the time this was one of the most gruesome gaming experiences I've had so far. I can see some aspects that made this game shine in 2007, but they all fell away given the prevalence of open-world games nowadays.
Quick Rundown of all the shit: The controls are uncomfortable and unprecise, the voices are way too quiet and hard to understand, the game runs at like 20fps on a PS3 while looking worse than some other games with better framerates, the parkour elements are v flat and slow, same with the assassin stuff, the game has a few under-used assassin mechanics that are just boring or useless, all "side-quests" and collectables were boring, bland copy-and-paste garbage. But by far the worst aspects were the NPCs. The annoying civilians aside, you couldn't do anything without a guard getting pissed at you and 50 more guards joining the fight. All. The. Time. It especially gets even worse towards the end when the game just throws 100 enemies in a matter of minutes at you. Mind you, this is a game where you play a "hidden" assassin that lurks in the shadows. With abilities like assassinating guards from hiding spots or from above missing, you have no choice but to constantly fight, literally like 70% of the game is just Altair fighting hordes of enemies. The combat system itself is fine, but nothing more than a 4/10. Same with the story, it is fine Ig (I didn't care anymore at some point) but nothing ground-breaking and the final scenes are just as boring and lacklustre as the rest of the game.
It probably doesn't deserve this low of a rating, but I'm happily giving this game one last fuck-you for the suffering I had to endure.

I struggled for three hours I really did try, but this game has so many things not going for it.

So boot up the game and I notice that every minute the game freezes for over 5 seconds, interesting maybe it's just the prologue, nope game was fully busted after the opening cutscene even during regular gameplay. Turns out you have to either buy the game and play it on the Ubisoft Store or play on Steam with no internet because it tries to connect to the old non-existent Ubisoft servers, that's fine I guess. The controls took quite a while to get use to and learn, "press button 1, button 0, button 2", another annoyance but doable. The scale of some levels is beautiful, the cities filled with places to parkour through cool atmospheres, albeit they begin to look a little too samey here and there with a washed colour pallet. Overall the presentation and graphics in the game are old obviously, but aren't the worst. Regular character and tree pop-in's when horse riding do plague the game however.

All cutscenes are in-engine which is sweet, the connection between the real world and the past is unique and the mystery of the story was the only real thing giving this game any desire to continue, but unfortunately the game kept doing me dirty.

The final straw that did it for me was the fact that every leap of faith I did I died. Like the one cool attraction, jaw dropper and signature feature I see about these games just not working and forcing a reset on me just put me off a lot. A game based around and encouraging parkour to the highest heights, just to be ruined at the finish. Found out it's because the game has physics related to frame rate and that V-sync is a must, which explained why most the AI I bumped into or killed would fly to the moon, but with V-sync enabled it was too little too late. Maybe the game is good, but if every time you tried to eat chocolate you got fucked in the ass til bleeding I doubt you'd be encouraged to keep eating chocolate no matter how good it is.

Three hours of buggy physics, extremely long un-skippable nothing burger monologues and repetitive gameplay that is fundamentally just Far Cry with a sword was enough for me. Maybe one day I'll come back to it after knowing how to fix all it's issues with a fresh mind and play it without getting shot down once, but the constant deterrence's give me no desire to try and play it to have fun.

It's interesting to come back to the game that started a series as massive as Assassin's Creed. Despite it's secured success today, the first game was a *risk*. Ubisoft Montreal were trying something new, and it happened to pay off. I think an reason why is the concept: Relive the Third Crusade through the eyes of Altair, a disgraced Assassin tasked with eliminating nine powerful figures to redeem himself and prevent a holy war from escalating. Then add the conceit of the Animus, a machine that lets people relive the past memories of their ancestors, and a sinister plot of the corporation who controls it. It's a great concept that set itself up for sequels galore. It's interesting though, that the first game itself is a victim of some of the same problems the rest of the series has—it's not fun to play.

Let me be clear, the parkour system is impressive, and the cities filled to the brim with flowing crowds of citizens you can blend in with is prime material for some stealthy goodness. But the design of the game from the high level sucks. You go on 9 missions to assassinate various people assigned by the 'master'. Each missions entails climbing some towers to find investigation missions, you need to complete a few before you can do the big job.

The investigation missions are throwaway minigames and challenges—time trails, pick up some flags, punch this guy, not exactly thrilling stuff. In fact it's the same type of things later games would include ad nauseam as optional content to pad out the open worlds. Here it's mandatory. It's not a slog to do the missions themselves, but many times you'll be spotted by a guard and have to escape, hide, wait, and then run all the way to another investigation mission on foot. The time it takes to do 3 investigation missions to unlock the main assassination adds up. And there's no shakeup to the formula for *each* main mission.

The assassinations themselves are a let down for such a long buildup. You run to the location of the baddies, spot them, and find a way to get the jump on them. Or you can just engage the whole of the city's guard in combat and parry the main guy with the hidden blade for an instant kill. Regardless, after which there's a cutscene, some dialogue with the assassins, a few loading screens, a conversation with the master, and you start the prosses all over again for the next assassination missions.

It's painfully dull mission design. And nothing unfavorable I have to say about the core combat/mechanics itself is as harsh as the mission design rightfully deserves. The next 2 games (from what I remember) are marked improvements on both areas, with better stories, characters, missions, and more polished combat. In many ways this game is a proof of concept for the series, not even the first draft. It's not a broken game or anything, but I felt a little broken while playing it.

História
A história do jogo é boa.

Gameplay

Nota: 7,5/10

Pontos que poderiam melhorar:
- Reprodução da história
- Gameplay mais dinâmica e variável
- Mais conteúdo para "End Game"
- Dublagem de NPC's secundarios

Perhaps the most impressive tech demo ever made.

This is a hard game to score. I played it when it first launched in 2007 and I just replayed it again in 2024. My opinion hasn't changed. I'm giving this a mediocre score, but it's not a mediocre game.

As far as I'm concerned, this was the beginning of modern gaming.

I see four main eras in gaming:

1. 1972 to 1985 - The 2D 'points' era, where games were just about high scores. This is from Pong in 1972 through to the mid 80s.
2. 1985 to 1996 - The Nintendo era. This began with Super Mario Bros on the NES in 1985 and continued with the SNES, Genesis, etc... Games were still 2D, but there were worlds and progression. Video games were no longer just as exercise in getting high scores.
3. 1996 to 2007 - The 3D era. This took the Nintendo era and rebuilt it using polygons and 3D worlds. This started with Super Mario 64 and continued through the Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, Xbox, and the early X360 and PS3 titles.
4. 2007 to Present - The modern era. A couple years into the X360 and PS3 era, games gained a new level of interactivity and world-building that gave an entirely new sense of immersion. The PS4 and PS5 may look better and have better tech, but they're still part of that same era. One of the first games to showcase this new era was GTA 4 in 2008, which built a living, breathing world unlike anything ever seen before. But it wasn't the first game to showcase that new era. The first game was Assassin's Creed.

Positives:

+ The art direction is beautiful and the cities are incredibly constructed.
+ The graphics were fantastic for 2007, and somehow the game still holds up in 2024 thanks to the art direction.
+ Excellent story. Solid 9/10, with interesting dialogue, philosophical debates, and character interactions.
+ Altair is a good protagonist with solid, stoic voice acting.
+ Great soundtrack (I especially love the score that kicks in in Jerusalem) and sound immersion with the hustle and bustle of the ancient city streets.
+ The parkour and climbing mechanics were a wow moment. These were a breakthrough and the combat animations also
looked cool as hell.
+ Good length. It takes about 20-23 hours to complete all the missions, although you can finish the story in probably under 15. Don't bother getting all those useless flags.

Negatives:

- Mission variety is terrible. There is so much repetition. This is a big part of why the game feels like a tech demo. Aside from the assassination sequences, so much of the game feels like a proof of concept rather than an actual full-fledged game.
- The combat kinda sucks. It looks cool and gives you the illusion of complexity, but it often feels like you're not in control and are just lucking out and waiting for the kill animations to kick in.
- The cities are beautifully constructed, but they feel underutilized and bland in term of activities. This is even more true in the 'Kingdom' overworld. It's simultaneously beautifully made, but also dead and uninteresting.
- The game can be pretty glitchy. It could have used another 6 months of development time to add some polish.
- The stealth mechanic absolutely sucks. Just like with combat, it gives you the illusion of complexity, but the AI is so dumb, that whether or not you maintain your cover often feels like pure luck, not skill. It can lead to a lot of frustrating moments. For a game that is so stealth-based, this is a huge fail. Again, the game needed more dev time to work out the kinks.

----------

This game was so far ahead of its time in many way, but then in other ways, it's a massive failure. The game's 'encounter design' is severely lacking, and as such, so much of it feels janky and unfinished. And yet the ambition, the tech, the music, the visuals, the mechanics, and the story all feel so close to making this a masterpiece that brought gaming into a whole new era. But the major flaws just hold it back severely. This game is the ultimate 7.9. So close and yet so far.

7.9/10

Since HLTB scores only go in 5% intervals, I had to round this down to 75%, since I can't in good conscience give it an 80%.

P.S. One final positive: This game had one of the greatest unveiling trailers ever, featuring Lonely Soul by UNKLE. Look it up. This whole series practically owes its existence to the hype from that song and trailer.

Overshadowed by its own series, the very first Assassin's Creed will probably surprise anyone who played any recent entry. It has a lot of flaws, and in a way, everything that's been praised about Assassin's Creed (the franchise) is not in Assassin's Creed (the game). But if you can manage to play it properly, which can be tricky these days (hey Ubi, it's time for a remaster), you'll have a very good time with a game that still stands very well and was incredibly imaginative for its time.
