This is a weird one, the gameplay is great but can be super hard and unforgiving, the story is there?? but takes a back seat from just about everything else, but the graphics are good and hold up pretty well. I streamed this.Updated 6 Days Ago

Emergent gameplay is at the heart of what makes Far Cry 2 such an intensely visceral experience. Whether you're merely driving from one location to another, or celebrating the completion of a mission, you never know what's around the next turn in the road or if militia will stumble upon you as they endlessly try to hunt you down.Reaching a bus stop may be a welcome relief, bringing respite from a turbulent and potentially fatal journey back to a safe haven. However, it usually means leaving behind an armoured vehicle and having to then temporarily drive around in a car found in town, increasing the threat of any near-future encounters.
Ammo, scarce in the midst of a gunfight, often runs out, necessitating the use of the dropped weapons of your dead enemies. Adding to the gritty aesthetic of the game, with it set in a war-torn area of Africa, those weapons can jam at the most inopportune moments. This only adds to the tension of an encounter with any militia, with you well-aware of the danger of wasting bullets and having to pick up a temperamental replacement.
The Realism and Redux mods refine and elevate the underlying systems to a new level of immersion, ensuring that you're fighting for survival and constantly aware of how vulnerable a situation you're in. Not only must the map be frequently referred to, but familiarity with the roads, terrain, and landmarks becomes essential to orient yourself accordingly. Along with the numerous bug fixes and the myriad of weapon, NPC AI, UI, and graphical improvements, they're well worth installing.
Even without those mods, however, Far Cry 2 remains a classic of the open-world genre. The developers clearly enjoyed having the freedom to experiment in ways not seen before, and in some cases ways that have yet to be copied by their peers, let alone improved upon.

There are many elements of this game that I really enjoyed, and an African setting isn't something you often see in video games, so that was interesting. However, I have to give this one a thumbs down overall, as I found the missions to be somewhat repetitive, and the constantly respawning outposts were extremely frustrating and made this game a real slog to get through.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

This is a serious progress relative to the first part, but... The game has a lot of both positive and negative moments, as well as a lot of unique solutions that deserve to be discussed, but I don't want to do it. Far Cry 2 has two main problems, which, in my opinion, completely destroy the interest of the game: endless enemy respawning and ridiculous controls. The whole game we drive from point A to point B, and each time we go further and longer, and on the way we meet the same outposts with the same enemies - endlessly. The control is even simpler, this problem concerns the console version of the game - it's just unpleasant to aim, left-right is one sensitivity, down is another, up is another, it's some kind of madness, to be honest...Updated 3 Months Ago

I really wanted to like this one... but it ended up being both boring and frustratingI absolutely LOVE the games that came after this with FC5 being one of my all time favorite games. Being a fan of old(er) school games, going back and trying out the first two Far Cry entries seemed like a good idea
I was wrong
Others have mentioned many of the problems with this game and I agree. Repetitive gameplay loop, absurd respawns, too much time spent just moving about, etc. etc. etc. The big thing that kills the enjoyment for me here is it's just confusing. Everything is the same color and the lack of a minimap makes navigating even in small spaces really difficult. When I run up against the constant checkpoint gunfights it's impossible to tell where the enemies are since they are the same color as everything else. I just get shot and don't even know what direction to turn
I really wanted to like this game and I almost did. I was willing to look past some of its quirks but it became a slog after only about an hour of gameplay
For serious, go play any of the later games, they are all fantastic

I'm not a fan, but I really don't understand why this game is so infamous. Of course, this was my first (and so far : only) Far Cry game, so I can't compare. But even if I found it painful at times, I think Far Cry 2 has a lot to offer gameplay-wise. I was really surprised by its attempt for realism, to the point of making the game deliberately not fun because what it tells, afterall, is not fun at all (okay, maybe I'm over-reading). It's rough and tough and sometimes unforgiving. I can't say I've had the time of my life but sure it was satisfying.Updated 5 Months Ago

Normal Mode. Car Battery Ending. Includes some optional missions and collectibles.Graphics: The game's graphics are pretty good and still hold up today, especially the natural scenery. The artstyle leans in on the realistic side, which doesn't age very well and makes some characters and areas look very bland.
Gameplay: A ton of the missions revolve around destroying and killing, which can get boring fairly quickly. It can pick up the pace, especially when you realize there are a lot of fun gameplay features such as enemies dragging themselves to safe places, the bullet penetration, and the fire-spreading system. The game leans more heavily towards immersion compared to other Far Cry games.
Sound: Sound quality is good, helps a lot with immersion. The music score is pretty nice, no complaints here.
Difficulty: Even on normal mode, the game is kinda difficult. This is made harder by the amount of enemies that spawn, how hard the enemies are to see, and just how quickly your character gets gunned down. It might be immersive, as both you and the enemies can either die very quickly, or take awhile to die...
Plot and Themes: Story is a really confusing mess, but from watching video essays and my own thoughts: I conclude that the game views mercenaries as harbingers of destruction, a disease that spreads for profit and pleasure... everything in this game culminates into a rough view of this war-torn country... Endings were shit though...
Length: The game feels like a drag to complete, it took me multiple years of off-and-on gaming... so yeah, it can drag on for a bit too long. Also, my time includes some optional missions and some collectibles.
Overall: I would totally recommend this game, solely on the basis of how immersive and different it is from a lot of other games. Immersion is handled quite well and destruction in the game is rivaled to none.

Updated 8.5 Months Ago

I love open world survival games and I usually really like Far Cry games, but this game's predictable, tedious design and ugly visuals kills all the fun of exploration and adventure.+ Super dark plot, where everyone is looking to backstab everyone
+ Cool atmosphere, especially when you're alone
+ Awesome sound design
+ Guns feel decent
+ Cool final mission
- Every time you travel you will have the exact same experience, where you will have to take out several respawning camps and at least a few Jeeps with turrets that chase you down. This is like 80% of the game.
- Very ugly
- Super stiff physics and shooting
- Voice acting is fast and monotonous with no gravitas
- Details of the story becomes nearly impossible to follow
- Stealth is very unpredictable such that it becomes somewhat useless

Platform: Xbox 360Region release played: USA
Year of release: 2008
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft
Graphics: 4/5
Audio: 4/5
Challenge: 4/5
Fun factor: 3/5
Quick Thoughts: Far Cry 2 is an open world first person shooter, having no plot relation to previous entries in the series. The game takes place in war torn Africa, wherein the player acts as a malaria stricken mercenary taking whatever jobs come their way. The majority of the gameplay concerns logistical navigation through large areas, then interacting with frenetic firefights to finish the mission. Far Cry 2 is perhaps formulaic to a fault, it has a very narrow focus and harbors some questionable game design. But with its strong graphics (for 2008), immersive environs, and exhilarating gunplay, Far Cry 2 is decent wetwork.
+Outstanding gunplay with exciting battles galore.
+Impressive 2008 Xbox 360 graphics.
+Well designed audio engine and convincing sound effects.
+Above average difficulty for a console FPS.
+Excellent explosion physics and fire (literally fire) spreading mechanics.
-Too much drawn out driving around and backtracking cross country (further compounded by respawning security checkpoints and overly aggressive enemy patrols).
-The big open world is strangely barren of reasons to bother exploring it.
-Console version has a highly inconvenient save system.
-The pointless malaria gimmick should never have left the back of the napkin design phase.
-A ridiculous ending to a nonsensical and confusing plot.

As a fan of Far Cry 3 and 4, I’m shocked by how much less I enjoyed this game. I couldn’t even bring myself to finish it. It is astounding how much they added and improved in Far Cry 3 compared to this.To be fair, I played this on the Xbox 360 and the game runs at what feels like 15 frames per second. Now I play old games very frequently, so I am used to worse performance, but this felt borderline unplayable with how bad the frame rate is. The game tries to go on this idea of realism, yet it’s so inconsistent and the parts that are “realistic” are either not even realistic or just irritating. For example, the mechanic where your gun will jam at any given moment. It’s not even realistic that a weapon would jam that frequently. This mechanic may not have even bothered me if it wasn’t for the fact that you can barely get through one magazine before your gun jams in the middle of a gunfight where you already can’t see fuck all, in part due to the frame rate and in part due to the “realism” where you can barely see enemies and hardly ever know what you’re even shooting at. The malaria mechanic where you need to take a pill at random also just feels pointless and like an irritating interruption. When I say it’s inconsistent, I mean that it’s extremely stupid that your gun blows up and you need to take pills every 5 seconds, and there’s no mini map because of “realism,” yet there’s so much about the game that’s unrealistic. For example, there are only four bus stops in an entire country in this game, which by the way is SORELY lacking more fast travel. A bottle of water heals you instantly. Buddies just happen to know where you are and are able to save you when you die magically. Those aren’t even the best examples, and those aren’t issues I have with the game. The issue I have is the inconsistency and the poorly executed survival and realism mechanics.
You spend most of this game staring at a map (in which you cannot set custom waypoints or any waypoints of your choosing), walking or running, or driving across the map and getting interrupted every 10 seconds by a group of enemies that chase you and break down the car. You then get out of the car, eliminate the enemies, spend 15 seconds repairing your car, then going back on your way. That’s most of the game. It’s annoying and it’s not fun. Side objectives are also boring and the game moves at a snail’s pace. Hunting for diamonds wasn’t fun either.
I have to say that I am very disappointed in this game and thought I’d like it way more than I did. It’s irritating, it’s not fun, the gameplay is boring, bland, and incredibly choppy, and it lacks any of the style that Far Cry became known for. Even without all the annoyances and performance issues, this game would still be a mediocre shooter at best. I am dumbfounded that I enjoyed the first game more than this one. Initially, I made this review before finishing the game. I came back and finished the game to find it didn’t get any better. 4/10 (Below Average).

The game is "immersive" - first experiences with it are punishing, and the first intensive gunfight I got into was really exciting. But once you have to get around the map, you start to hit the pain points of this game - transversing anywhere is almost always a pain; the buddy system is not helpful; weapons are not very satisfying (a huge mistake in my opinion); the stealth is nonexistent; and so many little QOL mechanics are just not present. It feels so samey after about 5 hours, but I wanted to push through to finish. Not going to replay.Updated 1 Year Ago

Gameplay is better than 1, definitely, but they decided its a good idea keep the same gameplay loop from hour 2 to hour 19. With no progression, no new content, no new gameplay... Nothing. If the game was shorter, it would be decent, but this plus the inconceivable amount of bugs with the current version in PCs from nowadays makes this just annoying. Not to mention the storytelling, which you don't give a fuck about it because its implemented horribly. It has good ideas, but the way to put them in practice is, lets say, not the best.
Fortunately, they fixed that in Far Cry 3, with better storytelling, upgrades, characters you are interested in, new mechanics and different types of secondary quests.

This game is just too frustrating and boring due to annoying AI, long travel distances, and enemy attacks on the road. The realism and atmosphere is effective but it seems like there are too many unrealistic aspects, such as constant enemy attacks everywhere, which were added to add to the realism. Therefore, it becomes counter-effective and actually, ruins the realism.Updated 2 Years Ago

Generally a high-quality game with a few weird aspects. The save system is weird allowing you to save anywhere at any time while also making a big deal about specific save locations. Higher difficulties are annoying as you die very frequently without feeling too satisfied.I'm not sure the story makes sense, especially the ending. Does a weird thing where the protagonist is silent but they also have their own opinions written out in loading screen text and also implied by character interactions during missions. Very strange. The antagonist is well written, though.
I liked it, but I'd only recommend it for people who know and like the main line Far Cry games, as it's very similar to those while being slightly worse in minor ways.

This game was weird. While it was a lot of fun, following the story was really difficult due to everyone speaking inhumanly fast paired with a thick african accent. Also the ending was.. well depressing i guess. The only bad thing about the ending is that you cant play or free roam after it, which is a shame. Performance was pretty much what i expected of an old ps3 title, a lot of frame drops here and there, but definitely not unplayable. The aiming is also very clunky with a controller, which needs getting used to. Overall not a bad game, but not a great one either.Updated 3 Years Ago

Updated 3.5 Years Ago

After finishing the game: actually amazing story, if you ever get the chance to rush through the game, do it, the ending is really something. I really wanted to like this game, but today, in it's current state, is literally unplayable. I had to install 3 different patches for correcting game-breaking bugs, and played the whole game with the fear of having to install another. Other than that, the gameplay overall is not good: the shooting feels bad, the weapons can jam (and when you buy the improvement for that it just feels like nothing's changed), the AI is completely broken (and makes the game not playable with a difficulty higher than the lowest one), the map system is shit (it was good at the beginning but then ubisoft changed it), there are too few fast travel points; I could go on forever... The reason I still gave it a 4 it's the setting, I really like it and I think it perfectly suits a Far Cry game.Updated 4 Years Ago
