Atomic Heart is an impressive effort for an *opera prima*. Diving deeper, the game was in active develpment for around 5 to 6 years. However, I was shocked when I stumbled across Artem Galeev's YouTube channel. Artem is the main artist and one of the writers of the game, probably also responsible for some other aspects of the game.

And not only were there videos showcasing very recognizable aspects of Atomic Heart from 6 years ago. There were even some videos from 7, 8 or some uploaded as far as 16(!) years ago. Of course, videos from that long ago have less and less resemblance to the end product. It just can't be denied it is a sight to behold, to see the ideas flourish, concepts develop, and a fierce passion go through time unscathed.

Atomic Heart is pompous at the introduction, being as focused to impress the player as the USSR was to impress the world in this fictional, alternate timeline. It takes a while until they let you in on the gameplay, I think it is justified though, this section was effective in its purpose to immerse me.

Gameplay is mostly typical when it comes to first-person shooters, still I'd argue they are always pleasant to use, having proper weight to every hit and every shot. So gunplay isn't hugely varied but skills set it apart a little more, allowing for more experimentation when approching the fights, such as Mass Telekinesis and Frostbite, which were my favorites for most encounters.

The world you explore is very static. It feels more of a still of a moment than a living, breathing place. It's all fitting for the story, as the robots malfunctioning just happened. It's a very creative way to make the best out of budget or time restraints. The only life you'll find is mechanical.

Atomic Heart consists of linear segments sprinkled over the facade of an open world. Anyway, this isn't fully open, as many paths are inexplicably restricted, but you're seemingly able to get anywhere after getting past the "tutorial", independent section. It isn't that big either, I ended up visiting a late boss area before even visiting my first story-related area, and my girlfriend who played it first got scared and told me to go away. Fortunately, the boss would only trigger after a certain story beat, so I was safe.

So the linear sections are those that progress the story and those called Testing Ground. Those sections are commonly underground or inside buildings, and sometimes involve a small portion of the map. Anything inside was very fun to explore for me. Testing Grounds had a sort of a TLOZ: BOTW feel to them, having some simple puzzles to solve. I ended up only exploring 3 of the 8 Testing Grounds as it felt kind of pointless as I was already kind of overpowered and had to hurry to finish the game before it left Game Pass.

The story-related buildings and the Testing Grounds felt underachieved, even if they're a highlight of the world. For example, you would progress through a linear building, then you would be able to open a door from the other side which would let you easily traverse back and forth through the building. Thing is, there was never a reason to go back and explore if you've already done it, except for the VDNH, which had you going exploring all four floors finding some pieces needed to progress.

VNDH was, in my opinion, the most accomplished location, I just would have loved if the team had gone all out on the concept, making these locations play almost as a Zelda dungeon.

So that takes me to the whole open world thing. I understand the need for it, this game needed **SCALE** first and foremost. It shows the power and progress communism has achieved. If you go strictly following only the story points of interest, you'll find you barely visited anywhere, while also being at a disadvantage, lacking many upgrades.

It just makes me wonder, have they focused more in creating a richer, more meaningful world to explore instead of it being a showcase for the story they're trying to convey, would it be a better game? Or maybe just ditching it altogether and going fully linear? Then it would lose the impact of seeing such a developed society and what lies beneath.

Most of us will agree on something, and that is the robots get fixed way too quickly and way too often in the overworld. There are ways to get around them, and it sells you the threat looming beyond the Facility 3826, but it can be a real pain to traverse in the beginning.

Sometimes I just get lost in many overarching stories in media. Not because I don't pay attention, it all just commonly becomes superflous verbiage, reiterative and having a bunch of buzz words instead of meaningful ideas. I didn't feel that lost with Atomic Heart, even if some of the implied lore got really out there sometimes.

Stupid character limit! My full review is here: https://www.backloggd.com/u/MozartDaniel/review/1914082/

Jogo não me pegou.

This game was honestly a mixed bag for me. The environments were cool to experience, however I felt that the level design was a little lacking. The open world/hub concept was cool but I didn't feel like I was required to really explore beyond what I had to do to progress the story. The story itself tries it's best to be a philosophical piece comparing it to something like BioShock, but it didn't work the same magic that BioShock managed to do. The gameplay is good, and the music is fine, but something just seems missing through it all, and it's hard to pinpoint exactly what it is. The voice acting is atrocious however, and was something that I had to suffer through rather than enjoy. At the end of my playthrough I wasn't completely satisfied, just happy that the game was over and done with. Don't think I'll come back to this one.

Atomic Heart 6/10:
- The Graphics are beautiful as well as the design of the game itself
- The Story is like a wave it has it's moments but most of the time it's a 4/10 for me
- Countless killing a farming for a weapon just to have the same animation as the axe one
- Weapon upgrades don't really matter or I haven't seen any effects on the NPCs while using weapons that were already upgraded.
- Twins are overrated and only an up tier for horny guys
- The ending really disappointed me, because it doesn't really matter which ending you chose the outcome will be the same. At one hand you will desert and on the other hand you will die (Well since the DLC release you don't actually die you are just trapped inside the Limbo)
- The price of the DLC isn't worth it

Atomic Heart

Pontos positivos:

- Ambientação: É excelente, acredito que seja o ponto que mais chama a atenção do jogo por possuir uma atmosfera bem única, as máquinas e os robôs tem um certo estilo Russo de maquinário bruto. A parte do jogo de exploração do sub-solo tem um design excepcional;
- Gráficos: São bonitos, o jogo têm uma iluminação bem feita principalmente na parte do complexo no sub-solo com uma coloração não muito viva que transmite um ar de prédio comercial fechado sem contato com a luz do dia. A modelagem é boa, animações faciais ok e detalhamento de cenário ótimo;
- História: É bem legal, o começo dela é um pouco lento e um não muito detalhada sobre o enredo e personagens, mas conforme a história vai se desenrolando ela instiga a curiosidade do jogador em descobrir o porquê dos acontecimentos, possui uma narrativa ótima e diálogos super bem elaborados;
- Missões: Em geral as missões tem objetivos bem definidos e que casam bem com a história, os chefes ou sub-chefes tem um grau de dificuldade bom, sendo que o jogo muitas vezes acaba por não te dar dicas para como derrota-lo;
- Progressão: O desenrolar do jogo durante a parte do complexo é muito divertida, tem alguns puzzles para resolver, inimigos novos que vão surgindo cada vez mais e parte de melhorar os itens da luva é na medida;
- Dublagem: A dublagem para o português do Brasil é excelente, as vozes de todos os personagens são bem feitas e com boas falas, destaque para o protagonista e para a robô Nora;
- Trilha sonora: Fantástica, as músicas que são tocadas nas rádios, nas batalhas de chefes e as do final do jogo são boas demais, cada uma delas encaixa bem com o momento que é tocada;
- Combate: Temos a possibilidade de usar diversas armas brancas para bater, com golpes rápidos ou carregados, utilizar o dash para esquivar, armas de fogo e a luva com golpes especiais;

Pontos negativos:

- Mundo aberto: No jogo quando não estamos no sub-solo podemos andar livremente pelo mundo aberto que fica na superfície, e acaba sendo um lugar com uma grandeza desnecessária e mal inserido no game, servindo apenas para craftar recursos e explorar alguns locais para achar anexos da arma, ambos não instigam o jogador à explorar;
- Colmeia e Pchela: Esses são dois inimigos que são muito chatos e atrapalham a gameplay, um é a Colmeia que não é destrutível, não ataca, mas respawna o Pchela, que por sua vez restaura os inimigos e câmeras por completo, faz sentido pela progressão e gameplay mas te atrapalham na em certas partes para coletar recursos;

This game has a lot of cool ideas and a great art style for a lot of it but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. There's a fairly big difficulty curve in the beginning but once you get a bit more upgrades and weapons it gets fairly easy. The Zvezdochka is ridiculously over powered once upgraded and it's secondary will melt bosses. The story is more or less Bioshock in more ways than one. It's not terrible but kind of mid for most of the game. There's a big twist that is completely unearned. The character is all over the place. At times being very heroic with a moral compass and then just being an idiot. There's a dialogue choice near the end that is completely polar opposite of what comes before. The dialogue is so bad it's good. Honestly hearing him yell 'crispy critters' never gets old.

A great premise, and a great start. Unfortunately the pacing and structure takes a big hit at the midpoint, even though the atmosphere serves it very well.
I could have continued and finished, but something I can't put my finger on put me off, which is a shame, because it's a good creative vision. I honestly recommend it.

One of the most disappointing releases of 2023. Pre downloaded the game and was pretty excited. The graphics were great, the setting in which this universe was set seemed intriguing, and as foolish as I was I was also expecting a great story. I was met with distaste.

1) The combat is horrible, your characters powers and gunplay is ok. But the encounters, H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E. Especially the open world sections, the bunkers were pretty bad too, stretched out and just felt overall disjointed.

2) The dialogue and writing. GROTESQUELY bad. Crispy critters. I swear a lot, I’m cool. Could be due to totally different cultures (Russia - West), two contradictions that don’t seem to fit. A lot of great minds from Russia, ranging from scientists, to artists and philosophers. I have nothing against them, but I have found that the Russian video game story writing, is usually way over the top and generally uninteresting to follow.

3) Looting is immersion breaking x10 in this game. You pick up loot with your magnetic hand, but the loot feels so boring and bland. Pick up scraps from the infinitely spawning robots. I just stopped picking up stuff and wanted to get through each level as quickly as possible eventually.

Just overall a bad game. Very unfortunate since it seemed the developers had a lot of passionate ideas and visions on what they wanted to create here.

Apropo, are 2 endinguri :)

Gets better as it goes and then drops a total ass pull twist villain at the very last second that ruins the entire narrative. Open world is incredibly designed, rich and detailed. Visuals are pretty stunning. Gameplay can be hit or miss due to some wonky movment and hit detection. Level design has occasional issues. Almost zero difficulty curve, challenge is completely sporadic and senseless. Menu navigation sucks shit and a lot of info is poorly explained. Dialogue ranges from good to annoying. Wears its influences on its plasmids.
A pretty mess that will probably stand out from the crowd for a long time. If they make a sequel I can see easy improvements leading to a masterpiece.

Really enjoyed the game. The story ending was something unexpected and left me with a lot of questions.
It's very much Russian Bioshock, some of the combat was clunky at first, but after playing for a while it finally clicked.

It's currently on GamePass so play it while you can.

Once the DLC goes on sale, I will probably go back and play though that to figure out what happens in the story.

Fraught with bugs, including some game breaking ones where grass land in the open world areas made you fall through the world. Other bugs included, your character model being visible, not properly working with a high FPS in all areas where there's a weird desync for enemies and locks, where the enemies basically just stand there (happened in quite a few boss fights as well). The solution is to lower the frame cap, putting it at 60 works the best but looks awful, 90 is still a bit desynced but is better and doesn't look as bad.

Other than all the bugs, the story was quite convulated at times and there were plenty of things that don't make a whole lot of sense.

Despite that I had a generally enjoyable time with the game, in terms of gunplay and the abilites, as well as quite liking the setting. Hopefully further games made from this studio have more time to be polished before release, could be quite a great product in the future in that case.

One of the highlights of the year for me (I'll count this one for 2023 even though I finished it on the holidays). Amazing visual style, very interesting premise and story, every little detail is just delightful. I'm not sure how delightful it'll be for people not from the ex-USSR who are not familiar with the aesthetic, but I hope at least some of the love the devs have poured into the game will be seen. On the negative side, the interface could be (much) better, parkour mechanics suck, and the ending does not really finish the story, especially the "good" ending. Still, amazing game, congrats to the developers, and I'm eagerly waiting for all the DLCs!

Atomic Heart has some standout features, such as the world, which is interesting and well thought out, and the combat which is admittedly pretty fun, but has too many cons to be recommended.
Starting with the world, the highlight of this game, it is incredibly detailed and immersive, with many fun and intriguing aspects to it that I can actually imagine would be present in dystopian USSR. You can clearly tell that a lot of thought and love went into the world of Atomic Heart, and the game just oozes soul because of that. If you like dystopian or scifi worlds and their history, then I would say that this game is worth playing just for that.
Now, moving onto the cons.
For starters, the game has a few bugs, such as getting stuck on a ledge and whatnot, nothing too major but can cause some frustration. This game also has forced mouse acceleration and no FOV slider on PC at the time of this review.
In terms of gameplay, while the combat (guns and glove skills) are fun, the enemy placement doesn't seem quite as well thought out and the basically endless respawning of downed enemies gets annoying really quick. However, the enemies themselves are varied enough (after the first 5 hours of the game) and have pretty interesting designs/lore to them.
Speaking of enemies and difficulty, Atomic Heart's difficulty curve is greatly skewed, in that it starts off much harder than it ends. For a game with very obvious RPG elements a better curve would have been appreciated but many CRPGs and other games tend to fall into this trap as well so it is excusable.
Atomic Heart's graphics aren't bad, but there is no RTX (again, at the time of this review), which can become somewhat noticeable when a lot of the monsters you fight are hunks of reflective metal. The textures sometimes take a while to load in, particularly on the save game machine. That being said, it is definitively serviceable.
Like many more modern game, Atomic Heart features the incessant dialogue between the protagonist and his sentient magic mcguffin, in this case his glove. The dialogue isn't the worst that was ever written, and the glove provides interesting exposition without making it too tedious, however I can definitively see some people be turned off by it. I personally prefer dialogue between the protagonist and a human companion, and am not a big fan of the sentient magic mcguffin trope, though in this case the game has a good lore explanation for the glove.

Where to begin.
This could have been a masterclass, and it's close to a master class.
Graphics are probably the best graphics I've ever seen, the artistic design is probably one of the greatest of all time. The gameplay, movement, power mechanics and weapons and weapons upgrades are insane and so much fun.
So... perfection you would say ?
But cons... scenario is so basic, so simple, the lore is insane... but the campaign itself is so simple.
Looting is awful... The glove to loot is cool, like really... But scanning all drawers, all shelf... is so annoying.
Dialog system is the worst ever, like really, subtitles are going on top of one and other, playing in Russian, so native language would be the goal but it's impossible to read everything.
Also the main character is weird... You understand it with the campaign but it's weird.
Game is amazing but to much cons that bring the note down.

Boy, do I have some thoughts…
I enjoyed my time with this game, but it missed being a 90-95% game due to some bizarre gameplay and level design choices.
In the linear internal sections, this game felt like a spiritual successor to Bioshock and was an absolute blast to play for the most part. But then they would show you out into the awful open world section, where you realistically had to attempt a sort of stealth in a game that handled stealth really poorly, otherwise you would set off an alarm and be swarmed by enemies. Oh, and those enemies could be repaired, so you didn’t even have the chance to clear an area and move on. And then there were some really poor designed level areas - submarine torpedoes, I’m looking at you.
Will be interested to checkout whatever these guys make next to see if they can properly stick the landing next time.

A generous 6. It caught my interest initially in the prologue but as soon as the game opens up it just falls flat. Combat doesn't feel very rewarding, as enemies seem to just absorb your hits with minimal reaction. Movement is weird too, you run so fast forward but strafing is extremely slow with no way to adjust it. I like to look around while walking in the direction of my objective and this game says no to that, apparently. It reminded me of Bioshock but quickly just made me want to turn this one off and go play that instead. Could've been better than it is. Glad I just borrowed it from the library.

Forspoken aRolf).

UPD.

A solid 8 out of 10. There are some area's it needs some work. The above world and below world are completely different games, where the below ground not really caring about alarms and things like that, it's about exploring and solving mild problems and blasting things.

The above world is about surviving and trying not to set off alarms while killing things that will just be rebuilt over and over without relent. It's move and move fast to get around to what you need while still looking at stuff, but no time to be as intent on exploring and collecting everything.

There is some wonky writing, but the story overall is really awesome. If you like scifi and alternate history you'll enjoy this, and the story has some predictability but there are twists you likely won't see coming. What a finale, worth running through for that end.

The main downside are achievements/trophies are not well thought out and well usually be few and far between. Also the game doesn't really lead you to some of the extra's like the training grounds, most of us will never see even ONE training ground. And that's how you unlock some of the special mod recipes for your weapons. I was told one was near by but never found it. And by the end of the game I had still not seen one.

Visuals, sound, and design are still amazing. With a sequel they could refine the overworld to be more like the underworld. Also, they could tighten up the crafting slightly, and a more natural trophy/achievement system and more natural training grounds that are harder to miss.

Play it if you have Game Pass, purchase if you love the idea of it all, and wait for a sale if you aren't sure. Once I started i couldn't put it down.

Atomic Heart is an enthralling experience that left a lasting impression on me, thanks to its chilling atmosphere, thrilling gun combat, and thought-provoking story. Despite a few minor flaws, I found the game to be a near-masterpiece and highly recommend it.

Mecânica responde bem e a temática é bem interessante.

Amazing music! A BioShock type of game! Good game overall, enjoyed everything about it the only parts I hated was when you went outside and had to destroy cameras etc. The game is pretty hard as well at times but you can change the difficulty settings. Overall good shooter with a lot of charm to the game.
