Overall the stories were great, compelling, and somewhat challenging. Characters were engaging and fun to interact with. The only complaints I had was that sometimes, the game wanted you to link certain evidence to precise lines of text, even when you could get that contradiction in other logical means. Also sometimes I wish the characters would ease up on their quicks, like Franziska with her whip. But I digress, it was a good experience overall.Updated 5 Days Ago

A Saga of Legal SatireStory
All the MCs of AA1 are immediately lovable. Phoenix himself has a great sarcasm to him, never feeling like just a mere player self-insert. Even the antagonists Gumshoe and Edgeworth are lovable, despite opposing Phoenix most of the game. I can see their reasoning despite knowing my clients to be innocent. For a VN hybrid originally released in 2001, this game contains many amazing plot twists that still hold up to this day. The characters' relationships and chemistry are great too. Phoenix’s and Edgeworth’s entwined backstories and deep emotional connection going beyond mere friendship were enough to make me shed a tear or two.
Unfortunately, I have mixed feelings about JFA's story. While 3 of 4 cases were great, “Turnabout Big Top” felt too silly to me. And I dislike Franziska. In theory, the concept of von Karma’s genius daughter coming to the "US" to avenge her father’s downfall made me want to like her. But instead she came off as annoying and far less interesting than Edgeworth was in AA1. At least she becomes tolerable in TT.
Luckily, TT's overarching story is far more compelling than JFA's. I was invested in every character this time. Godot is a far more interesting and likable prosecutor to me than Franziska. I don’t get why some fans hate him so much; to me he was on par with Edgeworth. Also, Dahlia Hawthorne was a villain that I loved to hate, albeit differently than I hated Manfred von Karma in AA1. Plus, I personally loved that TT has a more interconnected plot structure. All the cases are top-notch, but the final case is arguably one of the best cases of the entire trilogy, wrapping everything up nicely.
Gameplay
For the entire trilogy, the main gameplay element of presenting evidence that contradicts a witness’ testimony is an absolutely genius way to engage players' minds. True, some solutions to the puzzles were subjective and/or ambiguous, but I only really found this to be a problem in JFA and some of TT, but not in AA1. Ultimately, I found the difficulty level of these games mostly satisfactory, despite AA1 being relatively easy compared to the sequels.
Immersion
The DS release's remastered graphics include carefully rendered BG art and beautifully animated pixel sprites that helped immerse me into Phoenix’s world. The BGs for investigation phases made it easy when something should be noted as evidence in the Court Record. Although the character sprites are limited in frames/movement, the art for them is impressively both exaggerated and subtle in expression, switching between the two with ease. Compare Mr. Sahwit's courtroom temper tantrum to Edgeworth's soft eyebrow raise when troubled.
The OST for AA1 absolutely rocks. It really hypes up the player for the themes of truth and justice in the story. In fact, I find AA1 to have the best soundtrack of the whole trilogy. The music is alright in JFA, but a far cry from the genius AA1 OST. While TT's music doesn’t surpass AA1’s musical resonance, after a few listens, that OST grew on me as well.
Throughout the trilogy, the SFX, although limited, are cleverly used to describe a range of sounds needed for the plot. For example, in AA1, the sound of the Judge’s gavel pounding is later brilliantly repurposed as a "pop" noise for a sleepy character's saliva bubble, rudely awakening him from his nap.
Verdict
Don't expect a realistic legal drama going into this. Instead, enjoy the cartoony legal satire in this fun, mostly lighthearted romp about one man's quest for justice and truth despite the odds. Trust me, you'll enjoy it more that way.

I'm not too fond of Visual Novels. However, as a Visual Novel + Detective story, this one is probably the best or at least among the best. The amount of time needed to complete the game is beyond my limit.Updated 5 Months Ago

Pros:+ Iconic characters
+ Very interesting mysteries to solve, even has some creepy moments
+ blue badger.
Cons:
- Game play and navigation is old. Sometimes the logical steps you have to make to prove your point makes no sense and I'd even have to google it. Having to click through the screen 200 times to get to where you want is annoying.

Long time fan of AA, this is like my 3rd or something time playing the first 3 games, but it's my first time playing them with high-res visuals. They look fantastic, I really enjoyed replaying them. My only wish is that I could forget them so I could play them truly fresh.Updated 6 Months Ago

I love these games so much. The HD version on Switch truly is the way to go: updated sprites + portability = the best way to experience these cases. The only thing I'm really missing is a text log!!!This playthrough, I played the games in reverse order. Why? Because at first, I just wanted to see Dahlia Hawthorne, then I wanted to see Matt Engarde, and then finally I decided to just complete the trilogy while I was at it. 🤷♀️ It took me about a year, because I only played in short bursts.
The Apollo Trilogy recently came out so I'm very excited to play that next (possibly also in reverse order cause why not)!

Game - state of missions steam clock (start -> end): review* PW AC - the first 4 cases: 12.3h (23/08/11->23/08/30): a solid 9/10, worth playing to discover the VN style. Really loved the global case spanning the other ones.
PW AC - last case introduced by DS port: 23.4h (23/09/12): 5/10 at best, too much useless gimmicks during investigations and the story was relying too much on mcguffin + too long for a single case
* PW AC: JFA - 43.1h (23/10/25->23/11/12): 8.5/10. 1st case was not the best idea (amnesia for tutorial, such a cheap trick)). 2nd case was good. 3rd case was good too. 4th case was very interesting, but shows its limit gameplay wise on the 2nd day (very weird to have to keep the trial going on and it also shows in the writing and twists... But it was interesting to see the vision of what is a lawyer and leave the final morale in the player's hand, open for interpretation).
* PW AC: TaT - 69.3h (23/12/26-24/01/29): 9.5/10. Wow, what a masterpiece. Excellent writing with a lot of interlinked things (both as a standalone episode, but also elevates the legacy of the 2 previous games while enriching the story and building on what was previously laid out without making the story a mess by being really coherent. My only regret is that I can not recommend this episode as standalone because of this specific strength that makes it so great.).

I played through the entire trilogy, it's a pretty fun visual novel game, and the characters are very memorable. My only complaint is that the gameplay can be boring, and if you present the wrong evidence you are sent back thirty minutes or so, making you have to constantly save before a hard part. I also thought much of the murder cases were way too repetitive and similar to the others. Still worth playing and the finale cases in each respective game were by far the best part; being both intense and heart wrenching.Updated 7.5 Months Ago

Through gaining knowledge and solving puzzles you can solve cases, which are really fun yet puzzling to solve sometimes. Ace Attorney Trials & Tribulations: afer having completed the trilogy, I felt completely amazed by how specially well done this last game was, and it's a lot to say, since the other 2 games of the trilogy are REALLY well done. Trials & Tribulations has its own "beginning" and "ending", starting lots of years earlier in the setting of the game. The story is just astonishing, and so are the characters, as always. Last case is such a masterpiece, I can't simply express it with words.94%

Ace Attorney, is truly something wonderful. Even if you suck at the game (like me) the writing is still so goofy and creative it makes reading fun. Text appears on timing as if it were spoken, creative characters, plot threads, plot twists, everyone comes back at some point its hard to remember everything but makes you feel so smart when you do. If you do or don't like visual novels, you still will enjoy this goofy story that also properly takes itself seriously when it needs to. Although I often mashed through dialogue if the character spoke too slowly, when I watched it was done so well along with the accompanying animations. If you want a game series just to play on the side, this is a great trilogy! Sets out what it wanted to achieve, to near perfection. My only complaints are the lack of a hint button and that often you present the right evidence but on a statement adjacent to the "correct" statement, when technically both would work, or someone asks a question where you need evidence relating to their appearance, but in reality just present their profile. Still would highly recommend though!Updated 10.5 Months Ago

Still playing because not completed yet, with 15 hours in and at chapter 3 of the first game in this collection. Until now a fun and over the top graphic novel that involves a lot of shouting 'objection!' during the trials. First you need to find clues and witnesses to go to the second part that is the trial itself. I find it the perfect combination. Will definitely complete it in my own phase.Updated 1 Year Ago

Great collection of a great trilogy of games. If you're interested, check out the individual games themselves - there are some minor differences, but the trilogy as a whole is impressively consistent in its quality. As for this HD collection, nothing to complain about - it's smooth and attractive and has some fun little trophies, to boot. Hope to see more from Capcom in the future.
