Really addictive and calm game.Had a great time roaming around, catching fishes and exploring the ocean.
Good variety of nature biomes and areas, given a more dense topography and a feeling of an open world.
Great story filled with mystery. Well though ending of the game. Totally recommend this game if you're up for a relaxing straight forward story RPG filled game.

This is a great and very simple but deep game. The main premise is so addictive. Catching and selling fish, always going for that next upgrade. The horror elements are fairly light but I love the designs of some of the fish and creatures. I think they did a great job with each region and its unique horrors. I had a blast getting the platinum in this game. The only issue I found was you end up getting all the upgrades with so much overstock of money and supplies while you ship is so limited. To me there could've been a lot more minor upgrades to increase storage and what not. I know some of that made its way to the DLC. The only main issue I had was the RNG on crab pots. The Crown of Nadir literally took hours to get and I had maxed out pots in Stellar Bay. So fuck that thing but other than that a great game. I would love to see what this team does next.Updated 4 Days Ago

I downloaded this game for free from the PlayStation Plus library. I’d seen James play it on stream and had played through the Dave the Diver DLC.## Gameplay: 8/10
Dredge is a slow burn. I mostly enjoyed the core gameplay loop of catching fish, selling them, and upgrading the ship. Each new upgrade felt like a big step forwards and progress was rapid.
Collecting different fish and aberrations was satisfying and never felt like a chore. There were 151 (familiar number) species to collect and I had just over half of them as of completing the story.
## Story: 7/10
The game doesn’t give much away. The lack of explanation as to who you are and how you got here adds to the creepy atmosphere about the game.
The characters you meet are all downbeat and troubled. Helping them makes you feel slightly less hopeless although you’re never sure why you’re doing any of the things you’re doing.
The highlight was helping a marooned airman defeat some monsters in a swamp with traps and mortars.
## Sound & visuals: 9/10
I was a huge fan of the soundtrack and way the game looked. The sea was especially beautiful on PS5. It reminds me of a more bleak Wind Waker.
## Overall: 8/10
Dredge was a short but memorable experience. Its strengths were the collectible fish and upgrading the ship.

I very much enjoyed Dredge. It has the feel of a unique kind of survival game, but I don't think you ever get any kind of upgrade overload. Everything is paced really well. The story is pretty intriguing and the cosmic horror elements are great, but never go very far into horror. It can get a little scary when you are at high panic with a fully loaded boat at high speed, trying not to get sunk by some sea monster or mystical force. The art style is very a pleasant modern impressionist style with stylized and abstract portraits for characters, similar to Disco Elysium or Dishonored, perhaps. It does a lot of work to sell the setting. The music is also great.
The gameplay is fairly simple, but surprisingly satisfying. 9/10

At times, Dredge is a simple fishing game with side quests, a collect-a-thon for upgrade pieces allowing improvements in your vessel's carrying capacity and equipment load, and a relaxing open-world adventure at your own leisurely pace. At other times, Dredge is a horror game founded in its sanity system, creating some--honestly--truly innovative scares.Scouring the world trying to complete the fish encyclopedia, dredging up materials to upgrade my ship with, and trying to avoid this ocean's many foul creatures make a solid, enjoyable experience. While Dredge doesn't do much to break from or go beyond its basic gameplay loop, I largely enjoyed my time with Dredge and felt it lasted just about as long as it needed to.
Spoilers for Dredge and Firewatch below:
Honestly, Dredge's story feels like a more potent version of the story Firewatch tried to tell. The protagonist, whose wife is no longer with them (dead in Dredge, in a dementia care facility in Firewatch), finds himself in a foreign world where he can escape from his past troubles. I believe the themes of escapism are better captured in Dredge, where the player gets to live and work as a fisherman throughout the entire game as opposed to Firewatch where the player has few opportunities to immerse themselves in their job before the final story sequence. Furthermore, while Firewatch's short story leads the player astray with delusions of grandeur and the protagonist is entirely reactive and ultimately has no say in the story's eventual conclusion, Dredge's protagonist is proactive in their choices throughout the story in their eventual final choice to resurrect their wife or to let her rest. This protagonist action makes me more compelled by Dredge's portrayal of grief and loss than in Firewatch, despite Firewatch's admittedly better emotional hook.

Dredge creates an atmospheric experience with a simple art style and very good music/sound effects. The gameplay and quests are relatively simple and straightforward but there is always an amount of tension during exploration. I like that you tended to gather enough money and resources by simply exploring each area and fulfilling the quests. There isn't a strict requirement on upgrading the ship but it does make life a little easier so it is satisfying to upgrade the ship.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

Fishing game where you slowly get better at fishing. There are a lot of mysterious things about the game, but you have to dig to get into them. I beat the game without really knowing what’s going on. The fishing is fine. The upgrade treadmill can be slightly addicting for a little while. Nothing wowed me about this game. It doesn’t hit a point where it gets a lot better. The game is consistent. Fish in a spot, do a quest and then move on to the next spot. The map at the beginning holds the whole game. There is not more depth to it than what you see from the beginning, unless I am completely missing something. I beat the game, so if I am missing what makes this game good, then it would have to be something I would look up. This game has excellent reviews and my only guess is that it scratches the itch for people that just want the grind and improvement treadmill that you get from upgrading gear and being able to do the same thing faster. It kept my attention enough to beat, but a lot of that is because I could easily watch YouTube or listen to a podcast while I played. As a game that lets you multitask, I would give it a 5/10 average, but besides that it would be a 4. I didn’t dislike it, but it would not be a game that I would recommend. With limited time to game, I have to really enjoy a game to recommend it.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

SPOILERS: Dredge is a Lovecraftian Horror Fishing simulator that immerses you into an old seaman tale. You play as a nameless old fisherman who crashes into the rocks at Greater Marrow. The mayor tasks you with taking over the position of the main fisherman, implying that he died due to crashing on rocks from madness. The game gives you the feeling of uneasiness and fear that theres something lurking in the dark, which perfectly captures the essence of the lovecraftian mythos. This peaks when you are fishing and catch your first aberrant fish, deformed by supernatural powers, and sends a chill down your spine. Honestly, throughout the game i lost count of how many times i got chills down my spine. However, towards the latter part of the game, the horror aspect tapers off considerably, since its just "more of the same".
The game fails at the progression aspect since you can get all the upgrades from just the second area that you enter (The travelling merchant sells the refined metal for upgrades), and you can find wood, metal and cloth everywhere. It would be nice if you needed some area specific upgrades or if the merchant didn't sell refined metal so you would have to search the areas to find it. After getting all the upgrades, the game suddenly became boring and there was nothing interesting or innovative in the gameplay.
The story aspect is amazing though, especially towards the end when you realize that the previous fisherman who was crashing on rocks and was crazy, was actually yourself, and that the notes you find from the previous fisherman's wife was actually your wife who died 20 years ago. In the end you realize the collector who was giving you all these powers was actually your fucking self, and you had the ancient evil book all along, and it was your fault that she died, and you used the powers to forget everything that happened.
Playing the game is like reading one of HP Lovecraft's books, giving you the old 1800s feel and aesthetic, and it features a story that could be considered an instant classic. Some aspects could have been better implemented, such as finding powers or trinkets through fishing, and having the horror aspect be more subtle in the start of the story. This is why i give an 8/10.
On a side note, i must admit i went through the game without dying once and upon searching it up, it seems that dying in this game is extremely lenient since you just respawn at the last dock.

Deciding between 85% or 90% and will go high. I was totally engrossed in Dredge. An absolute delight to play through. The art style and sound design work perfectly together to create an unsettling vibe throughout the whole game, but there are still places and experiences that are just beatutiful to behold.
The absolute dread you will feel during the first few outings at sea during the night will get lost a little, as you get more familiar with the game and upgrade your equipment, but the game is still so much fun to be in and explore and the mood is still just perfect I find.
A very fun game to complete.

Dredge is one of those "just 10 more minutes" type games, where you just can't stop getting more runs in. The gameplay loop is simple, fish during the day, get back before nightfall and upgrade your ship and equipment with the income you make. But the mystery and atmosphere are what really draw you in and asking for more. Control wise, you move the ship with the joystick in such a way that feels very technical, but still frantic during those nightly chases. Highly recommend this one, and there is so much more to do after you complete it the first time around.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

Dredge is a peculiar genre blend, a casual fishing sim by day and survival horror by night. On paper, these two sound directly conflicting, a complete mismatch, but somehow they've made it work in a way that compliments each one brilliantly. The game has its roots in cosmic horror, the fear of the unknowable immovable forces that hide in plain sight, just waiting to rise from the deep and dark below. And that idea works incredibly well for a tiny world dwarfed by a murky sea, one that is overwhelmingly vast and incalculably deep. It is a game I would call both relaxing and yet, terrifying. The core gameplay loop has you visiting a set of five islands, in search of numerous artifacts wished for by a shady figure that you, for whatever reason, choose to help. It's very simple on paper, go there, catch some fish, find artifact and repeat, but it is shockingly addictive. And I feel a lot of that comes from the RE4-esque inventory management system, that has you finding the most efficient way to store everything necessary for your boat while not limiting your day to day haul. It goes hand in hand with what I initially thought was an out of place in-game day and clock counter, instead it ends up adding the cherry on top, the fight to play just one more day or brave one more night, to find more and discover more before the clock strikes six. Also, I appreciate how hands off this title is with story progress, it just tells you the basics, go there, get that, and it does so without stifling any attempt to explore beyond. In fact, I'd say the lack of detail given only encourages player exploration more, and it's constantly gratifying because there is always much to see in Dredges' strange assortment of isles.
Talking of story, it's very non descriptive, with NPCs giving only clues and avoiding most questions of interest in these strange lands, but it does create an unsettled intrigue with it, a want for knowledge and a need to understand it. But the real truth is, there are no answers to the questions you ask, because the not knowing is what makes it so scary. It plays very well with the Lovecraftian influence, and makes perfect sense that the ending was similarly abrupt and incredibly bleak.
Quick word on the DLC before I conclude, I enjoyed it, but it is very much a stopgap to "the big one" coming next year. The Pale Reach is simply, more Dredge, it's another set of islands, this time baked in ice. It provides a little bit of backstory to what happened there, you fetch a few things, break a few things and catch a few fish. That's all. Would I say it's worth it? Absolutely, if you want to support the developers and get a few more hours in this wonderful game. But I do recommend playing it maybe, within the natural progression of the game rather than at the end like I did, as some items introduced will not really benefit you otherwise.
In conclusion, Dredge is an astoundingly creative title that I wholeheartedly recommend. It has plenty of content, and is well deserving of its asking price. It's visuals are both gloomy and gorgeous. And the main loop is never not compelling. So please, buy it and play it.
9/10.

Very pleasant yet eerie game, I loved it. Good attention to detail, polish, and depth. A different approach to the survival genre.Driving a cute little boat trough a horror infested sea was an interesting setting.
Fishing fish and aberrations had me curious about what could be out there, would be nice if we could actually catch/fight the specials aberrations of each region as that was a bit underwhelming.
Game loop was a bit repetitive but didnt overstay (during main story) finishing the fish ecyclopedia was a bit grindy but doable thanks to the powerup.
Story was average and didnt have a very satisfying ending as we didn't develop with the characters and world that much.

Inventive and fresh mechanics. A steady sense of progress, and there's always several goals to work towards. Creates inconvenient and cumbersome mechanics, which are then made easier as you upgrade your tools, and eventually you can automate things with the nets and the spells. Slow and ponderous atmosphere. Characters didn't really give much to grow attached to, I would've liked to develop more of an emotional connection with the townspeople. I found it a bit odd how non-chalant the supernatural elements were, like there were mutated fish that were a bit disturbing, but it didn't really have much consequence apart from knowing that there's something supernatural going on in the area, but that becomes obvious extremely early on. Decent ending.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

Graphics: 5/5Has a unique style and it nails it. A surprisingly cute art style for the dark tones in the game. It goes together quite well.
Sound: 5/5
The music in the game is great. Each area has its own theme and it starts once you reach a port or talk to the traveling vendor. The water and boat sounds are also well done. It's clunky and sounds like the equipment should.
Story: 5/5
It's not very clear in the beginning but you get hints along the way of the true reason you're in this chain of islands. The people you meet along the way are all interesting. Something weird or odd has happened to them and now they need your help. Fetch this or turn on that. It doesn't wear out it's welcome and gives you a chance to find all the fish in the new zone. There are two endings depending on how much of the story you search for.
Gameplay: 5/5
The loop was really fun. Reach a new island, find some new fish, expand your boat, get better equipment and repeat. I upgraded the boat before the last island but didn't focus on all of the new equipment you could buy. This hurt me in the last section when I needed a larger crab pot to find some of the required pieces for a puzzle. The day/night cycle also adds another layer of complexity due to different types of fish that appear depending on the time of day. Also becoming more manic the longer you're out a sea. Seeing boats on the horizon that don't exist. Rocks that aren't real. Sea monsters that very much are.
Functionality: 5/5
Few if any bugs. The save system was a little tricky to figure out but once you realize you hard save when the boat docks it's easy to reset to a last good known state.

This is a great spooky fishing game. There is a fine balance between management and cozy fishing and eldritch horror its so good and fun to play. Its fairly short to do but you really can just sit and fish to your hearts contentArt - 5/5 - this game looks so good. They have nailed the aesthetic and I loved the slight painted style that it has as well. The aberrations and more eldritch aspects as well are wonderful, toe the line just right of realism and pure eldritch creep. The environments are also very unique and give there own looks and vibe as well which helps keep it interesting through out
Story - 4/5 - this story is short but in depth, you constantly find clues to whats going on and why this area is the way it is and there is even 2 different endings you can choose from. I think the only downside is both endings are very abrupt and just go straight to credits
Gameplay - 5/5 - I think this game was really unique in the way it played. You have to get different rods and nets for different fish, then each fish type has a different mini game to be able to catch it. You the have the added bonus of inventory management to carry your fish till you can sell. There is an insanity mechanic where you have to be careful at night or really strange stuff can happen. Its wild
Music - 4/5 - this fits in well with the rest. The music is chill and consistent throughout and builds the world well. There are also sound elements that hint to whats happening in your surroundings and dangers that may be lurking. Its not too exciting but does fit perfectly into the theme of the game
Enjoyment - 5/5 - this was such a fun game and I highly recommend it to everyone. Its spooky its beautiful and its so fun. Its so easy to take at you own place and to just pick up again at any point. Just great fun

Dredge is an excellent game that mixes management and horror with a fishing background. From a gameplay point of view, the loop is fairly classic: you have to catch fish or collect resources to improve your boat in order to complete a main quest that guides your overall progress on the map. Most of the gameplay consists of steering your boat and performing QTEs to collect resources and fish. The gameplay becomes fairly repetitive towards the end, but given the short length of the game this isn't a huge problem.
In terms of atmosphere, visuals and music, the game is really addictive, with a day/night cycle where you can really feel the oppressive atmosphere at night. Visually, the game is really good, and as you progress through the game, you discover different islands, each with its own atmosphere and theme, making the whole thing very addictive.
Overall, the game is really good at what it tries to do, and the average lifespan (8-10 hours) isn't too long, so the lack of variety isn't felt. So it's a very good game that I'd recommend.

Black Salt Games takes the most simple gameplay elements and weaves them alongside a sinister storyline, stunning art direction and moving score to create a net that I couldn’t break free from. Like a swimmer carried out to sea by a riptide, I was powerless to resist the game’s pull. Eldritch horror in the guise of a cozy indie. There’s just so much to love about this game. The physics of your boat are satisfying. And so is the gameplay loop which has you weaving through treacherous waterscapes in order to discover the mysteries of each biome, and avoiding disaster long enough to get your fishing haul delivered and your cute little vessel upgraded. The writing is superb, evoking the creepy otherworldly prose of HP Lovecraft. I loved the designs of the fish aberrations and their descriptions. The game didn’t overstay its welcome either, ending at just the right time. And speaking of the ending, while it was abrupt, it will be in my memory for a long time to come. Dredge is stellar.

Dredge has a dark and dreary atmosphere with a great artistic styling and a short, but fun gameplay loop. The music was subtle which fits the game well, but probably wouldn't stand on its own for most. The collection mechanics are engaging for those that like multiple aspects to their collections. The quests were fun but rather guided, being told exactly what to do and where to go most of the time which it seems like a missed opportunity in a game that has you exploring the open ocean for different objectives. I was surprised the map was completely charted for you which would've added something a little extra for the exploration piece of the game so go into it knowing that geographic discovery is not the focus of this game. All in all, Dredge was enjoyable, but the gameplay loop became a bit of a slog towards the end as the gameplay varies very little after a few short hours into the game. I'd recommend it mostly to people who like collecting things and don't mind managing inventory and a darker theme to their games.

DREDGE is a beautiful sounding and looking game, with a fantastic gameplay loop and story alongside it. Progression feels very natural, and the side quests are cute (most of the time).Updated 6.5 Months Ago
