after playing 2 first it really felt like a perfect continuation/dlc. no mention of arthur but i understand why. its a beautiful yet tragic tale of crime. john felt really fleshed out. john is a very honorable protagonist given everything that happened to him. he ran from his past but it always comes back. only qualms were the duels not having better gameplay/clear results without having to respawn far af away and the Gatling gun. the last and final qualm is i wanted a better ending for jack but he much like his father cannot escape the past nor the environment.

Last time i play RDR1 was about 2013 when i was 13 years old. I don't remember anything tbh it was 13y ago.

Now i have completed the whole story and i feel so bad for john death and jack who will live without his parents. John is unforgetable character in games world ! The story is so emotional, How john ran for his revenge and tried to protect his family. I want really cry right now :(

The game is MASTERPIECE !! i didn't feel in one moment that the game realesed before 14y, it seems released at 2014 at least. I faced some stupied glitches but it was ok at all. The gameplay was very good for a 14y old game. The stroy, the characters, the speechs & the senarios were PERFECT. I felt john's feelings all the time i have played. This experience is unforgetable !

Pros:
- The main story is incredible from start to finish
- Every main character was memorable with some fantastic lines of dialogue
- All of the voice actors were incredible
- I like how most of John's backstory is left up to the imagination of the player
- John Marston is such a deep and interesting character that he earns his spot in the hall of some of gaming's most iconic characters
- The side characters were also interesting and funny to interact with
- Most of the side missions were fun to complete and did a great job at showing me how messed up the world is
- The side mission "Do I Know You?" is easily the best in the game with people still talking about it's meaning to this day
- The Open World is beautiful with New Austin and Blackwater being the best locations to explore
- There were a bunch of animals every around the open world that helped make it feel more alive
- There were a bunch of random open world encounters to complete which could earn you honor or money and were quick and easy to complete, so they weren't a hassle to do
- The first and third act were amazing. I love how in the first act you get to assemble a group of misfits to help you story a base in the search for man you are after
- The mini games were enjoyable with poker being the most fun
- The sound design for all of the weapons were perfect, and the soundtrack that played when either exploring the open world and fighting in missions was fantastic
- The story doesn't hold back on talking about interesting topics like slavery and racism which I found to be bold as most stories don't want to talk about that kind of stuff, and when they do, it's all very surface level
- The ending to the main story didn't make me cry like it apparently did for soo many, but it was impactful
- Undead nightmare's offers a great 3-6 hour experience for a low price
- Undead Nightmare's was extremely funny with how they bring back the characters from the campaign and just tosses them into a world full of zombies and how each character reacts to it suits their characters
- Going back to this game after completing Red Dead 2 makes this story even stronger which is rare to see happen in gaming as Red Dead 2 was a prequel to the first game
Cons:
- Some of the main story missions weren't fun to complete. Mainly the beginning of act 1 and the epilogue where soo much of it is herding cows or following a dog for a very long period of time or having to break in some horses which was janky as hell
- Most of Act 2 was that interesting to me with a lot of the civil war stuff just being kind of meh to play through with most of the characters coming from it just being annoying
- For some reason Act 2 is also really buggy with characters clipping through other NPC's during cutscenes which shouldn't be happening and John for some reason having a lazy eye throughout most of the Act
- The Mexico location, while pretty, was not really that fun to explore compared to the other areas with their being less to see and do
- I found that the ending to Bill's character was pretty weak as his death is really sudden with there being no option to tie him up like you could with Javier which I thought was a missed opportunity at giving us more detail to John's past
- The first game alone doesn't really make me understand why John hates Uncle so much and makes John comes across as such an asshole to him
- The biggest problem with this game is the fact that the game is a console exclusive meaning you have to do with the god awful aim assist where it either works perfectly or just doesn't work at all
- The lack of aim assist during the Gatling gun sections made them a bitch to playthrough and were always my least favorite missions, even if the story surrounding it was good
- Dueling was really weird to me. I felt like I never fully understood it as I would do the same thing everytime and while it worked about 95% of the time, the other 5% were only with 2 characters in particular where it took me multiple tries to get it right even though I never did anything different
- Controlling John was sometimes really annoying with how wide his turns could be

A solid game that has some clunkiness and a bit of a pacing issue.

The game is a great introduction to the franchise. It's fun to go around and complete missions and feels fresh to the player yet at the same time familiar as it borrows elements from the Grand Theft Auto franchise. The characters are well made and introduced and developed well. There's great voice acting and world building. The graphics hold up decently in 2024 which says a lot as this game came out 14 years ago.

The issues with the game are with story pacing and just clunk. There are some glitches here and there that are annoying and it just doesn't feel as polished as RDR2. Also the beginning 15 or so missions and the last 10 missions other than the finale were really boring and slow.

Special mention: I absolutely HATED most of the farm chore games ESPECIALLY herding cattle and breaking in new horses. The controls were awful and they went on far too long and the player is forced to do it far too often.

I enjoyed the twists and turns in the story and it holds up very well. I'm interested to see if an RDR3 will pick up where this left off.

If you played RDR2 and haven't played this, or are into Wild West setting games, try it out. It's a fun time.

Red dead redemption is a 14 year old game, but still it grabbed me more than a lot of recent titles in the same category. I'm not a big fan of open world games, especially if they are filled with pointless collectibles and annoying % meters. This game features both, but it is more of an extra thing and stays in the background. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but somehow this empty and desolate world felt so incredibly real and detailed, even if on paper it is rather limited. The characters are extremely well written and the dialogs are often very clever and entertaining. The music is excellent and the sound design is very immersive. I really liked the world they created here, the nature and weather effects still looked astonishing on the PS4 remaster. Even though the game might look monotonous, the variation in characters, missions and themes is incredible. After seeing the credits roll, I really felt like I had been on an epic journey, with multiple moments that will be etched in my memories for quite a while. And not necessarily because of their big emotional impact, but just because they felt like flashes of memorable experiences that stick with you.

Starts off strong, but slowly goes downhill.

Good
- it's very similar to GTA, in map and progression design. And I love it. The sandbox is one of the best for its time, especially when combined with its strong narrative and characters.
- I appreciate the "skip to destination" option. But the dialogue is usually interesting enough that u stay for at least a bit of the ride. Skipping to your waypoint was extremely convenient.
- being able to fast travel from anywhere in the wild is very convenient, unlike in Red dead 2
- steering the horse is really easy. The control is reactive and fluent. Matching speed with your comrade is really useful.
- The narrative is much darker than Red dead 2. There's more about rape, murder, and deception. Despite the time period being a bit later, it seems things are more wild.
- I like how your horse will go faster if you keep it on the trail, instead of the grass. This was a good reward for steering the horse on track, and gave me something to do if I couldn't fast travel.
- I like John Marston as a character. He's Sharp and critical of others for the right reasons. He's a good judge of character, and he's good at verbally destroying another character through a mix of sarcasm and seriousness.
- marking targets with deadeye isn't automatic unlike Red dead 2, which I think is a good thing because it makes it more challenging and technically more demanding.
- five finger fillet is pretty fun.
- it's interesting seeing the corruption in the early Mexican government.
- is it actually possible to unlock I turning lock on a safe without some special hearing equipment?
- this game has villains that make me want to kill them because they are so evil. Like Allende. Compared to Red dead 2 where the villains that you are fighting icons or actually just trying to follow the law, while you are against it. As of person who is living in a civilized society AKA the year 2020, it's hard to relate to the van der Linde gang point of view.

Bad
- I want to be able to free aim, but trying to free aim while riding a horse in trying to shoot enemies while they're on the horse it's very very difficult. Which means sometimes I need to rely on aim assist, which just feels like cheating. Dead eye runs out too quickly.
- the textbox tutorials disappear too quickly. I find myself trying to perform the task while reading it, but most of the time halfway through reading it, it disappears. Though u can go to the journal brief to check what was said, but this breaks the pace of the gameplay. This affects tutorials as well. Like during the duel tutorial, I'm trying to read the text, look at the opponents, and look at the red and blue bars, and they are in separate parts of the screen, and it happens all at the same time. So where am I supposed to look? I'm trying to read the text, I'm scared the dude's going to shoot me. And the tutorial only happens once, so if you miss it, then tough luck. Or you can go back to your logs to read through it, but that obviously isn't going to be the same.
- it's weird how in some missions, everything related to a mission just disappears The moment the mission is finished. Your comrade disappears. This is a recurring thing in the GTA series, and I never liked it. Even if they showed your comrade riding off and disappearing in the distance would have been better then them just vanishing. It's as if the mission was nothing but a dream.
- some of the reasons for dying is kind of ridiculous. There is one parts where I rode my horse into I guess water that was a bit too deep and died. Curious thing is that I walked in really slowly, then the screen just turned black immediately with the word dead. Instead I think the game should just pop you off the horse. It would make more sense. Nico in GTA IV didn't just die when riding a motorcycle into a lake. And the game is older than Red dead, so why?
- it's annoying how if you accidentally run over a townsfolk you fail your mission. Sometimes they're just in the way, and steering the horse isn't the most precise thing in the world.
- objects render slowly on PS3. It kills the immersion sometimes
- there was a time where I wanted to buy snake oil, but the shopkeeper literally just walked out of the shop and started walking around like a regular pedestrian. I don't know if this was an intended programming as part of the AI, but it was quite annoying cause I couldn't end up buying what I needed as the shop keeper never went back to his shop.
- I feel like they could have changed up the premise and the reason that John Marston helps so many people. It just seems like the reason he's doing all these missions it's always to try and get some information. I just find it a little unrealistic that anyone what do this many favours, and get betrayed, Survivor and still continue doing favours. Especially John. a normal person would have snapped long ago, and threat

Game felt like it lingered too long for some of the characters in the main missions. The fetch quests were a chore. It took me considerable effort to the get to the ending. But it was worth it.

Marston's entire story and those deep impactful moments, like the first time you horse ride into Mexico, make this game worth playing.

The hole it left in my heart after the ending. One of the greatest gaming moments to date. The build up to that is crazy good

I 'lazyquit' the sequel years ago. Sounded too much, too long, too open-world-with-a-thousand-things-to-do, but once the Switch port for Red Dead 1 was out I was like : "okay, it's an older game, so maybe it will be more gameplay-focused, less casual, and moreover : shorter."

I was wrong. Sure, the game is shorter, but the map is huge and feels somewhat empty most of the time (God bless the fast travel's inventor!). It was far from a bad experience anyway, especially in the first act. Controls aged a little, some things are unintuitive as possible (like not having a shortcut button for the world map), but the game is pretty cool once you've got how the quest system works (I'm not a Rockstar regular so I have to confess some things that was probably obvious for GTA players weren't for me). Oh and the port is really good, one of the best I've seen on Switch so far (besides Nintendo's own catalogue).

That being said, I have a few complains :
- weapons are as numerous as useless. I did most of the game with my good old Winchester repeater (that you can find around 2 or 3 hours?) and that was fine.
- the storytelling is great, but uneven. The game basically has four parts : the first one is the longest and the best. It has the best characters, the best moments... and the most tedious too, to be honest, but that's fun enough, especially when you reach parts 2 and 3 which are just gunfight over gunfight and wait, another gunfight here. Don't get me wrong, gunfights are by far the best side of the game. But it's too much. As for the fourth part (starting when you come back to your family), it feels like a long epilogue with boring quests that only matter story-wise. Oh and guess what : there's an official epilogue after the epilogue. No wonder why Rockstar made things too long when it came to make a sequel...
- storytelling has a few (big) flaws during the Mexico part. You know right from start that the army are a bunch of awful people doing awful things and that they'll end up betraying you. Yet, you still have to help them to have the main story progressing. It's a nonsense, especially since the game doesn't adapt to your own progress (you can help freeing the leader of the rebels and still be welcome to the army's lair? Hm, well... okay, I guess?)
- the game has a secret easy mode but it's so well hidden that you can do the whole game not knowing about it. Long story short : when you've failed the same segment X times, the game offers you to jump to the next checkpoint. But since the game is pretty easy, it took me around 20 hours to fail enough and discover that I could have skipped a bunch of tedious things. That's vicious, Rockstar Dudes. Very, very vicious.

Apart from that, the game is very good, even by 2024 standards. I easily can see how it was a must play at the time, and it's still a very good gaming moment, especially if, like me, you have a little thing with cowboys.

Errand boy simulator. A western B movie stretched over 20 hours. 70% of this game is filler, escort missions, scrap, and recycle. The gameplay is also horribly outdated; playing with claw grip is mandatory when riding your horse and firing your gun at the same time.

The strength of Rockstar has never been in the gameplay, but rather the rememberable characters they create. The ending of this game was very satisfying, and I’m going to remember a fair bit of the cast for a while. However, up to that point, I wouldn’t say the experience was worth it now in 2024.

Unless you are a big fan of Red Dead 2 and want to delve deeper into the future, I wouldn’t recommend playing Red Dead Redemption 1 in 2024, mostly due to the gameplay and its controls. 65/100, a memorable but tedious game.

I very much enjoyed this game, something about the PS3 aesthetics and the somewhat clunky movement was a little annoying but had its own charm. The gameplay was solid although I couldn't really get used to the aiming with the PS3 controller. The dead eye slow mo helped anyway.
The strongest points of the game were the side missions and characters in my opinion. Especially the necrophile dude and the magic drink salesman were funny and well written/voiced. Another thing I really liked were the mini games, like playing blackjack or poker as well as the world itself which I found quite beautiful and atmospheric. I had some major trouble with some of the later mini missions :D

Nota 10.

Red Dead Redemption is something... weird. The game has great graphics and awesome atmosphere, but everything else is at least debatable. RDR is very similar to GTA 4 - both games lean heavily on some realism of their own, and both games don't benefit much from it. Huge, but half-empty open world, which is not interesting to move around and there is nothing to find - all side activities, in fact, offer only a tiny story, but not a unique or at least interesting game experience. The story missions are, well, just like in GTA - come to the point, kill 10 men. Each mission gives little plot, in some places even too little, focusing on revealing characters that will probably disappear from the plot after a couple of missions. The driving is fun, but it's incredibly monotonous and not at all entertaining, which, for the record, is one of the game's two main mechanics. Unlike, again, GTA, where driving a car is gameplay with its own nuances of physics and the need to maneuver in traffic, RDR offers to just press the button to maintain speed - that's all. Shooting is not bad, euphoria works and sometimes creates funny moments, but most of the shootings take place at a long distance, because of which the physics beauty is simply not visible. Despite my complaints about the key game mechanics the game is cool, it offers you a huge visually diverse world with a lot of activities, though not the most varied and interesting, and of course a good story, albeit with a very poor presentation. Even taking into account all the faults RDR definitely deserves a pass, the game really has something to love for it

Red Dead Redemption is a well-made game. It has an engaging story with unique characters. The gameplay can be a little repetitive, going around shooting dozens of enemies in each mission, but it remains exciting throughout. I enjoyed playing the various gambling games and just exploring the world. The graphics hold up very well as well. This is a solid game and I recommend it to anyone who wants to get into red dead.

One of the best games ever made, hands down. Has aged very well too, looking great on Xbox Series X. I'd highly recommend giving Red Dead a shot sometime if you haven't already. I think it's almost flawless,, unless you'd like to nitpick at some technical issues it has, which are mitigated via its re-releases and backwards compatibility anyway! Yeah, sure, its a little jank at times, but all games from this era had a little bit of that.

Point is, Red Dead Redemption does everything right, and iit deserves the utmost credit for that.

It's kind of unfair to evaluate this game after having played the sequel first. However, ignoring it or attempting to erase all memories of games released after this one seems silly.

First and foremost, I had expected so much more from the story. The ending is solid, I won't deny that, but for the most part, you just get a task, meet some people in trouble, help them with their errands, get some info, meet even more chaotic characters, finish their errands, get more info, do it dozens of times, and move closer and closer to your goal.

Yeah, some of the missions are pretty good, but overall it feels like a huge bag of random activities bound together with scarlet thread.

Talking about randomness. Random encounters are quite repetitive in this one. RDR2 also reuses the same things, like someone trying to steal your horse or a lady in trouble from time to time, but it's so occasional that you never tire of it or feel it's scripted. But when in RDR the same thing happens for the third or fifth time, you simply stop caring. The same is true for all of these enemy hideouts, which respawn at intervals. It's just grinding places; there's no story behind it.

The majority of strangers missions lack depth. Rockstars are known for their mad characters, but it was a huge pleasure to see more emotional, personal stories in RDR2. Unfortunately, most strangers in RDR are either just idiots, bastards, or psycos of some kind.

Yet overall, it's a nice game to try and see what Rockstars was capable of, as well as how impressively they grew and machured in terms of storytelling and gameplay.

Having embarked on the journey of Red Dead Redemption several times over the years, spanning from its original release on the Xbox 360, to a second time on the 360 back in 2020, to now on an upscaled, emulated Switch version, I've finally finished it.

Having completed the original Red Dead Revolver, I found it to be bogged down by monotony. However, Red Dead Redemption did a great job blending the finer elements of its predecessor with the tried-and-true formula Rockstar honed through their Grand Theft Auto series. There's a noticeable synergy between the game's mechanics and narrative, reminiscent of Rockstar's signature style from that era.

The game's allure was immediate, drawing me into its world with a magnetic pull during the early stages. Yet, there were moments where my engagement waned during the middle. Nevertheless, it managed to reclaim my attention, steadily building momentum as it approached its climax.

I don't really know why this game didn't click for me, I really liked RDR2, but this game was so much different and honestly very boring until Dutch came in about 2/3 of the game. Everything before that was kinda boring, and the end was just so heavy with story, that the first half just felt like shooting and riding. I don't have a lot to say, I guess in the end it kinda got to the same point as the RDR2 epilogue so I kinda enjoyed that, but it just felt left short and also the ending was just.... I don't know, disappointing.

Red Dead Redemption was definitely an adventure. This game had an old west charm that felt unique to play, so that was definitely interesting. This game was fun overall though, and I did enjoy it.

This game's story; while slow in the beginning, but I believe it picks up later. You follow John Marston as he’s forced to work with the government to take down his old crew so he can leave his old life/ways behind him and live on the ranch in peace with his family. I’m not going to get too much into the story, because it’s one that's better off being played for a blind playthrough, and I think it’s the best way to play it.

Gameplay wise, this game had its ups but also had its downs in that regard. For one, I felt like the world was pretty immersive when it came to the open world. Riding the horses was fun, and going from place to place in the old west on a horse was pretty rad! But where the game was fun, the game’s controls also felt kinda clunky at times, and combat could have been slightly improved imo.

Overall, I did find Red Dead Redemption very enjoyable! I thought the game was a great time, and the story was pretty intriguing (though I felt like 60% of the characters were kinda pieces of shit, lol) and the gameplay was fun as well. Red Dead Redemption is a 7/10 for me!

I just finished playing RDR for the second time in my life and I'm pleased to say that it holds up more than well. In fact, for a game that is now over 10 years old, it holds up so well that I am confident that it has cemented itself in video game history as a classic.

This was released at the time that Rockstar started to really refine game-play in all their titles. Once GTA IV was released, it was just a matter of slight tweaks here and there to make all future titles exceptional. And that really shows in the first Red Dead. Controlling John, horse riding and gun-play is extremely intuitive, responsive and easy to pick up. This in turn makes the entire open world experience a delight and so much fun! Which I might add, this world has just the right amount of content that adds extra engagement without feeling bloated (which is rare in the genre these days).

The open world is fun, but also incredibly beautiful. I played on a Xbox Series X and the slight upressed graphics only slightly enhances what was already a stunning looking game. Additionally, I remember frame drops on the 360, which were completely gone as everything ran smooth from start to finish. But the Series X only touched things up as the art direction and design is what makes Red Dead a masterpiece. That also extends to the brilliant sound! Sure, the firing of guns, gallop of hooves and overall effects sewn into the journey are very impressive. But it is the score that ties the whole art design together. Each location is enhanced by the music and given a unique sense of atmosphere as you travel from one place to the next. Oh, also, there are some nice original licensed songs thrown in at just the right time for good measure.

After considering all that, how could this ever be a classic without a masterfully written story behind it. This also came at the time when Rockstar made the wise decision to hire 'no-name' actors for their roles. But they are actors that fit every colourful character perfectly all of which have some of the best dialogue in gaming to work with. The story itself is classic Rockstar, mixing parody with drama that remains a great formula for entertainment to this day. It is Johns journey itself that really wins it all. No matter how you chose to play, you will join John on a struggle to leave the outlaw life behind, while battling his very inner nature.

I could go on and on really as there is so much to love about this game. I played this again after RDR2 and adored how it organically felt like it rounded off John Marston's saga with Dutch and his gang. But that story is one piece that makes a complete package and that package will forever be a must have for any gamer's library.

This is a really great game with gameplay that definitely still holds up in the modern day. The combat and overall atmosphere is absolutely bang on, with everything feeling exactly as I would expect. Initially I didn't really know what to do to progress the story, but once I figured that out I had a great time going from place to place and watching it all unfold. It's surprisingly well-written, although some plot points drag on a little longer than they probably should do. Alongside the writing, the real star of the show is the voice acting, with every single character putting on a great performance that really made them feel like real people. In particular I'm impressed at how much character they gave to John, as the main protagonist. Usually a stoic tough guy character can feel a bit one-note and uninteresting, but this one felt really compelling.

There aren't many downsides, although the visuals do look a little dated and I came across a very small number of glitches (the map wouldn't load at one point and just kept the pause menu background up instead, NPCs froze in place mid-run which allowed me to shoot them easily, and one where a mission trigger wouldn't appear until I reloaded the area). None of these glitches were deal breakers though and the rest of the game was smooth and trouble free. The only real issue I have is that the checkpointing system could sometimes feel a little punishing, but other than that I really enjoyed my time here. So glad that I finally checked this game out after all these years!

Red Dead Redemption

Pontos positivos:

- Ambientação: Ocorre em diversas regiões do final do velho oeste dos Estados Unidos e México no começo do século XX e a atmosféra do jogo é majoritariamente de climas desérticos e áridos;
- Gráficos: Tem um nível de detalhamento incrível e certamente um dos melhores de sua geração, a vegetação é maravilhosa, efeitos de impacto de bala, construções, animais, água e animações faciais, todos excepcionais;
- História: Excelente, é muito bem dirigida, construída e emocionante, você consegue ter empatia ou raiva pelos personagens que fazem parte da vida do protagonista John Marston;
- Missões: São muito bem construídas e conectadas com a história, com objetivos até que bem diversificados;
- Progressão: A evolução dos personagens e com a apresentação do que pode ser feito neste vasto mundo aberto é boa, nos mostrando a riqueza em detalhes e variedades do gameplay além das missões principais;
- Gameplay: Quando começamos a jogar de cara já percebemos que é um jogo feito pela Rockstar, ainda possui alguns elementos de títulos anteriores da desenvolvedora e outros que foram aprimorados como a movimentação, o cavalo que é muito bem feito em sua cinemática e outros npc's que interagem com o ambiente. Outro aspecto que foi incluído neste game e que além de ser muito bom, é muito divertido também, é o Dead-eye que é uma mecânica de atirar chave do jogo;
- Trilha sonora: É ótima e casa bem com o ambiente;
- Customização: Os trajes que vamos obtendo após completar certas tarefas, são bem bonitos e alguns te dão certas vantagens para jogos de azar, disfarce, melhoras para atirar com o Dead-eye e entre outras;
- Armas: Um jogo que tem a temática de velho oeste já era bem esperado que nesse quesito ele tivesse uma boa variação de armamento, e Red Dead Redemption possui um belo arsenal de armas clássicas para utilizar na gameplay, desde armas de alcance curto, bem como as de longo alcance;

Pontos negativos:

- Missões de jogos de azar: Essas missões acabam sendo um pouco sacanas, pois para conseguir uma determinada roupa do John existe uma tarefa de conseguir ganhar mil dólares em jogos de azar, no qual ou você faz um grind absurdo em jogos que ganham pouco e são repetitivos, ou você aposta no poker e fica a mercê do jogo de sacanear;

Nota: 9.1/10.0

I finally finished RDR1, and it was pretty good. I wouldn’t consider it a masterpiece, but it’s still worth playing. Usually my main issues with video games is the poor writing, but I didn’t have much to complain about here. The pacing was the parts I disliked, the game is basically just running from checkpoint to checkpoint. It just went on far to long, while the added length gave nothing in terms of storytelling. The point of the story was that he can never escape his past, and his son will continue the horrible legacy. It’s pretty simple story wise, and doesn’t say it made me think deeply about it. Which is disappointing. This is a game you play once, but I’m glad I did.
