Repetitive gameplay and the story is not as great as people make it out to be, but it's a good game. The combat mechanics are t oo simplistic though, it would've been better if the chapter for each character were shorter - but it's a remake, so i get it.

Very fun mechanics, beautiful art, and a not particularly coherent story. The weaving together of the 5 different narratives is not done that well and events that take up a lot of time in one story don't even matter in others. All the side characters are extremely thin and even the main characters only really get between 2-5 hours of characterization depending on how much extra screen time they get outside of their own story. Honestly, for how many cutscenes are in the game the boring blankness of the characters is shockingly bad.

Good side-scrolling BTA with some interesting gimmicks but 9 hours and 1+½ narrative arcs in, I'm starting to get tired of the proposition so there's no way I'm going for the 30+ mark.

Could have been a genuine 75~80 overall if it was more aware of it's own retention (10 to 12H max IMO)

Odin Sphere is perfection to me. Granted when it first released on PS2, it was rather clunky and a bit laggy, but this remake has fixed any problem I might have had with the original, to the point where there is nothing bad I can say about it.

Every design aspect about the game feels like it's trying to convenience the player as much as possible, and it works. There are many options for menu interface and customisation that all bases are covered.

The art style is beyond gorgeous. And it manages to retain crisp and clear quality on the PS4's HD graphics. It's also so refreshing to see a 2D game that looks this good been given such high treatment in terms of sound design, gameplay depth and overall quality.

The combat is fast and dynamic. And each of the five playable characters have their own distinct playstyle. Some are better than others, but that's entirely due to personal preference, and not out of weak balancing. Some people might complain the game gets too repetitive by you having to revisit levels and bosses as other characters. But what they don't realise is that the revisited levels have been altered to suit each character's playstyle and their difficulty level. For example, Mercedes' visit to the Volcano level includes flying segments and even a shmup miniboss to cooperate with her playstyle of shooting things. And with the remake's addition of unique music per each character's final level, these revisits never get tiresome.

And finally the story is outstanding. Five lengthy campaigns that never overstay their welcome and reveal more about the world little by little, without repeating certain events. All the characters are excellent and have their own unique conflicts, and it has layers of darkness and complexity that make it simply fascinating. Plus it's what I like to call a "railroad story", where each character's campaigns meet with one another at certain points in the story. And I adore railroad stories.

Oh and one more thing... the remakes have the original PS2 game within them! How many other remakes can you say the same thing?

As I said, Odin Sphere is now perfection. It is without a doubt the greatest Action RPG I've played. Or at the very least the greatest 2D Action RPG I've ever played. If you have a PS3, Vita or PS4, you owe it to yourself to play this legendary game. Do not miss this chance to play perfection.

2D instanced beat em up goodness!

THE GOOD:
Most of it, honestly, fun game! Graphics are typical top-tier Vanillaware stuff, really excellent and vibrant. Voice acting was very good (Japanese). Gameplay is solid beat-em-up mechanics. Nice list of move sets, interesting upgradeable stuff. The characters overall were enough, varied enough both in story and gameplay. Music was very good too. Decent amount of optional content without being crazy difficult, the final stages are interesting - there is a specific order to get the good ending for certain characters to take out their revenge, tie up loose ends with other specific bosses/characters, etc. It's very good how they overlap and interact, some even being bosses and then eventually heroes.

THE BAD:
Man they throw a lot of items at you. You must learn the (somewhat confusing) crafting system thoroughly to get the most out of it - lots of junk items that can clog up inventory etc. It's definitely more inventory/item management than it needs to be. The gameplay is also a bit repetitve too - while fun, all 5 characters go to the same levels over and over. There are plenty of powers to keep you busy, but from the sheer volume, you tend to find a few favorites and just max those out.

Play it, it's a solid game and the PS4 version is excellent.

Despite the fact that you have to play 5 similar campaigns (that includes same enemies, bosses and similar level design with skme exceptions) and some really ANNOYING bosses (Dwarves Airship, anyone?), the gameplay and graphics are so good and charming.

It gives me a lot of Legend of Mana vibes of everything seems like a Fairy Tale. Very easy to immerse yourself in the world. As Legend of Mana, a great story is not a huge plot twist filled one. Instead, are tales - little stories interconnected to a main plot that tries to teaches us and the character you are using something important; something we always forget :)

Beautiful game with a charming story.
All characters play fairly differently.
Combat is satisfying and bosses are fun to fight.
Minimap at the top for each stage allows for easy reading of telegraphs of even off-screen enemies, fantastic.

Ability Upgrade & Food sharing the same resource is interesting:
Having issues? Chow down and level up, maybe grind.
Doing well? Keep up the pace by upgrading abilities, may have no need to ever grind.

Issues with sponginess and some hitboxes can be hard to to interact with (ex: Frost Ben for both).
Lots of repeated content. Sometimes can be mixed up enough to be fun, other times boringly repetitive with minimal changes made.
Aiming craftables can be annoying (lack of telegraphing, need to memorize things).

Combat in this game is really fun, but it is just way too repetitive. This game has so much padding and the same bosses are reused throughout everyone's route. If there was more content in this game then it would have been an amazing game. As it is, it is too repetitive to be an enjoyable experience.

Beautiful graphics and fast paced gameplay, which can be fun in short bursts.

Honestly though, the game's story is a bit dull. It's a fairytale like epic inspired by Norse mythology.

What sucks however is that you basically play the same game 5 times. Yes, the areas are a shuffled and the layout of the stages are a bit different, but you'll feel like you are replaying the same game over and over.

Not that the characters don't offer something new each time, but you'll feel like you've done this stuff before and it becomes very boring.

It's a 7/10. It's a good game for transits if you are into that, but don't expect this to be on your games of the year lists of whatever.

Thanks to its gorgeously-rendered world, fast-paced combat and surprisingly deep RPG-mechanics this beautiful Vanillaware gem manages to overcome its ho-hum story and annoying map navigation and before you knew it, you’re on your fifth playthrough with another one of its five playable protagonists.

+ Gorgeous visuals with amazing attention to detail
+ 5 playable characters with their own fighting style and skill trees
+ Surprisingly deep, interconnecting RPG mechanics
+ A diverse selection of worlds to explore and conquer
+ Fluid, satisfying combat system

- Convoluted and not very interesting story, in general
- Annoying map navigation

Great graphics, great gameplay but I found the story not interesting enough to be stretched that much.
There are five characters which all take some part in the main storyline. You have to play with every one of those. And you have to complete 6 or 7 levels with every character. It took me around 5-7 hours per character (you can actually see how many hours you have spend with each character).

Every character feels unique and plays very differently. It's definitely fun to play and learn the mechanics. But the annoying thing about all of this is, that there are only 7 levels/dungeons. And every time you completed them all with one character, you have to repeat that with the next character and start from level 1. From level 1 with an annoyingly small inventory, no skills, etc.

Ok, you will learn something new about the story with each character. An interesting concept. But the story is really not that good.

Really enjoyed this. Artwork is beautiful, story is pretty decent and the combat is a really cool blend of fast, twitchy action and methodical, menu-based strategy.

The only thing stopping this from being one of my favourites is the backtracking... and I'm kinda conflicted about that. On one hand, there are only around 8 areas and you'll have to beat them around 4 times each. On the other hand, the main appeal of the story comes from seeing the same events from different perspectives... and you'd basically break that if you got rid of the backtracking.

The remake/remaster treatment turned the breathtakingly beautiful but rather slow, clunky and convoluted original into a still breathtakingly beautiful action-RPG with incredibly fast side-scrolling beat'em up gameplay, useful alchemy and 'magic' systems and a (still strange) focus on food. (Rather reminds me of FFXV, now that I think about it.)

The star of the show, though, is still the story with its five playable and interconnected characters, surprising revelations, near-constant betrayals, gorgeous presentation and non-canon epilogue/ending scenes. The references to Norse/Germanic mythology (Odin, the World Tree and Nidhogg, ...) and the game's world in general really appealed to me.

But the constant fighting against bosses with their hitboxes above the ground made me furious. Especially during the Boss Rush. A small gripe, yes, but I still felt like throwing the gamepad in a corner when I had the dubious pleasure of fighting Gallon once more. It's the only reason I even minded the repeated use of the same bosses. I'm rather sure that even the Lord of the Netherworld would feel a sword 'poking' at his toes.

Great game with with beautiful graphics and a mixture of beat-em-up and RPG mechanics, several characters to play through the game with but it can get a little repetitive at times since you'll be fighting a lot of the same enemies/bosses over and over and visiting a lot of the same areas over and over. Despite it's draw backs I still recommend it as it was still a blast to play and a joy to look at.

Fighting the same bosses in the same areas felt a bit repetitive towards the end of route 4 (of 5) but each character feels different to control and the smooth combo mechanics and extremely basic alchemy and cooking systems ensure that you never really have to grind. The storybook charm is present throughout the game, leading to beautiful art style and visual effects but also occasionally cheesy dialogue. This is offset by the good voice work and the fact that the characters are very much storybook princesses, knights and rogues. The Story kept me engaged and the platinum is easy for any trophy hunters out there. Solid game that is loads of fun for a rainy day at home. I cannot recommend this game enough to fans of sidescrollers or action rpgs.

A reason to buy the PS Vita. The game is amazing. I actually bought this on the PS 2 but neglected it since I didn't quite like the 2D scrolling. But I went and got the PS Vita version and regret thatcI didn't give the PS 2 version another try. Fortunately there is a classic version if you want to experience the PS 2.

The story and the way the game presented it is marvelous. You are literally watching a screen play. I love there japanese voices. It was just fun to watch like they were really acting on a stage.

Music is what I expected it to be since the story is base on valkyrie and such. It does fit to the scenes and the battles.

One thing this game exceeds in is basically the motion the characters does and also the story and lovely character design.

I definitely recommend this game to people who loves stories about love and people who likes action battle mechanics.

This is definitely a reason to buy the PS Vita.

I feel like I’ve touched upon everything I love about Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, and yet I still can’t seem to say enough good things about this amazing remake. Starting from an already-outstanding PlayStation 2 game, Vanillaware went above and beyond to realize its full potential with the addition of more role-playing elements, a near-perfect framerate, stunning graphics, better maps, and a more vigorous combat mechanic. Even after I finished playing, I wanted to go back and explore more areas, fight more enemies and collect more loot. It’s a continuous loop of fun, and I hope it never ends.
