My 5th Favorite Game of all time. When a game that is just writing can captivate me for multiple playthroughs, then it's doing something right. Brilliant writing, dialogue, world, graphics, even gameplay as rolling dice is plain addicting. This game has forever changed my writing style and I'll always want to write protagonists as deeply flawed as Superstar cop himself: Harry DuBois.Updated 1.5 Days Ago

From the start when you are overwhelmed and not sure how stuff works and unsure what happend till later on it's brilliant game. The story is well told and it has so many options to deal with every situation and conversations. The music and sound design was also a master piece. Using Sea Power for the OST made the whole experience nostalgic in some way. Props to Lenval Brown who spent eight months recording 350,000 lines of dialogue for this game. After finishing the game I see myself replaying it after some time again to try other characteristics/skills to see what changes. I restarted from scratch the first time after doing the first half and had weeks, sometimes months, of pauzes between playing the game. It was like a really think book I picked up a read everytime a x amount of pages of, even when not playing the game I still though long after playing what I made through in the game. After spending around 100 hours in the game the ending was really nice wrapped up but also felt somewhat quick. Definitely the best game I played this year. I imagine I'll be thinking about the whole story long after I finished it today. Must buy and must play for everyone who is into RPGs and storydriven game.Updated 1 Week Ago

I did not expect to love Disco Elysium as much as I did. I was absolutely stunned by how fantastic it is. It is truly remarkable, and a modern masterpiece. It also really spoke to me, personally, in a lot of ways, which I'll get into. The only reason I even was interested in Disco Elysium is because it has a 97 on Metacritic for the PC version, which is insane. I figured there was no way it'd live up to that, but I was wrong. It really is that good. What makes Disco Elysium good? It's the writing. Disco Elysium is meant to be a CRPG, and is classified as one technically. There are dice rolls and Skills, sure. But the game doesn't really play like a CRPG. There's no combat in this game whatsoever. It plays more like a visual novel, but it's the most enthralling visual novel you'll ever play. The hook of an alcoholic cop who lost his memory being thrust into the rigmarole of an important murder investigation that threatens to start riots is awesome. It's so captivating to follow Harry's journey, learning who he is, trying to recover his memory. His partner through this, Kim, is also a fantastic character in his own right, and I love how Kim reacts to Harry's decisions. In fact, many of the ways the game can end depend on Harry's relationship with Kim. If Kim is present at the end of the game, he'll outright ramble off everything you did, and explain the type of playstyle you used. I saw some people play this game as an bad cop, and then get surprised that Kim lambasted them for it at the end. Kim will tolerate you for the majority of the game, sure, but when it matters most, he'll make sure those decisions you made bite you.
Playing Kim and Harry as friends in my game was really wholesome. I intended to make Harry sober up in my game, and I did succeed with that. In the end, Kim said I was sober for the entire investigation. A whole week. He said I was an amazing cop. That I worked harder than anyone. It made me smile. It made me happy that I could steer Harry onto the path of a redemption arc after he ruined his life by being an alcoholic. In that sense, Disco Elysium is an RPG. You can make Harry be whatever you want, and the game will respond accordingly. There are events in the game that will change depending on how much dialogue you explore, or what dice rolls you pass or not.
I insist on my reviews being spoiler-free so I have to hold back on how much I say here. I want to express that Disco Elysium is one of the most well-written games I've played. And you can argue that it should be if the entire game is dialogue, to which you wouldn't be wrong, but it is still worthy of praise.
Disco Elysium is also one of the few games I've ever played where I want to write a letter to the devs personally and thank them, because the game means a lot to me now. I've dealt with people in my life who have alcoholism. And that's a common theme in this game. Numerous characters suffer from alcoholism, and I love how it's portrayed here. This game should make you dislike alcohol. And it made me hate it even more than I already did. You see how dangerous of a vice it indeed is, and how it can destroy lives and families. It ruined Harry's life. He's lucky he even has the chance to recover some of it in this game by going sober.
The game is also strikingly philosophical. The stuff about 'The Pale' is fascinating. I think that can warrant a whole text passage on its own. That aside, the political commentary is great. It's hilarious how everyone gets jabbed at in this game, no matter your affiliation. It pinpoints flaws in every angle, despite the devs and writers have their own alignment. And if you try to be apolitical like I did, you get called boring, which is funny too. Disco Elysium is actually quite a hilarious game, and I think that aspect is a little underrated. It is genuinely funny at times. I think I laughed for a good few minutes at Harry kicking the mailbox for no reason for instance.
I still feel emotions from this game that I can't quite describe. I feel empty, but... happy? Empty that it's now over, but perhaps happy from the satisfying "good ending" I received. It's a tingly feeling. Maybe it's the Col Do Ma Ma Daqua. I don't know. I just know that this is one of the greatest experiences I've ever had, and I was completely hooked from beginning to end. So, thank you Disco Elysium. I feel so enlightened and enthralled to have experienced you.

There is no other game ever made that is like Disco Elysium. it is mind-bending in the most bizarre ways. The art style is gorgeous, the music is fantastic, the story is incredible, but above all else the world building is second to none. Having to deal with your ever-increasing psychological stresses combined with navigating your way through incredibly political ideas sounds incredibly boring, but it is anything but. Just be prepared for a lot of reading or listening to the voice actors (who are all pretty good, especially the main narrator). For the kind of gamer that this appeals to, Disco Elysium might just be the perfect game.Updated 4 Weeks Ago

Despite being a text-based RPG, Disco Elysium caught my attention thanks to its reception from critics and fans alike. Now, even though Disco Elysium's gameplay loop consists mainly of dialogue, it's actually quite... addictive? Like, it's genuinely an extremely fun game to play because the dialogue is so incredibly engaging, well written and it utilizes some absolutely fantastic ideas that I've never seen before in a videogame. Besides, the gameplay doesn't consist solely of dialogue; the excessive amount of options that affect the story, the characters and even the gameplay, and the impressive skill system heavily enhance the overall experience.
However, the gameplay loop in Disco Elysium is not very important anyway because the game emphasises heavily on its narrative, characters and world building.
As for the narrative... it's one of the best written games I've ever played. The plot is quite simple, sure, but the writing is so goddamn compelling, it pulls you into Disco Elysium's wonderful world and it makes you forget about reality for few hours.
Additionally, the characters are engaging and well written as well, and the visuals and the music are good too.
Unfortunately for a game like Disco Elysium though, a text-based isometric RPG that mainly focuses on the dialogue, there is some fluff here and there.
Also, the handling and movement of the character feel a bit awkward most of the time, but it's not a big deal.
Pros:
+ Fun text-based gameplay loop
+ Deep RPG elements and progression systems
+ Great story
+ Unparalleled writing
+ Very good characters
Cons:
- Unnecessary dialogue in some instances
- Clunky handling
Narrative: 9/10
Gameplay: ?/10
Content: 9/10
Characters: 8/10
Music: 7/10
Art Style: 7/10
Final Rating: 9/10

Disco Elysium is without a doubt, one of the most well written and engaging videogames I've ever played.
Do I recommend it?:
Yes but it's not for everyone.
If you don't enjoy playing story-driven videogames with a lot of dialogue and RPG elements, don't bother.
Otherwise, give Disco Elysium a try.

One of the most well written games out there with super engaging and hilarious dialogue and great rpg stat system where you get to delve deep into the human psychology.I enjoyed most of my time with it and i say most cause i found the gameplay to be a bit lacking, yes i know there is no combat but there is no puzzles or interaction either, you just click on the text wall, i would have loved it more if i had to interact and solve things.
Also i found the last bit near the ending to be underwhelming and i didn't like most of the tracks.
Its still a good game to play and unique enough to justify its status.

i love this game so muchinsane writing, immersion, atmosphere
i do hv issues with the time specific quests and how they mess w the flow of the days (there aren't enough books to pass enough time to do one night quest per day as is the devs' intention). i also think that dice rolling checks r annoying, although i understand that it's inspired by dnd and plays into the unpredictability of elysium.
however, the story is good enough for those to be ignorable. so amazing and literary, especially having read the disco elysium prequel.

This game is a masterpiece, but not for everyone. At first I was overwhelmed by the amount of text, but after a day or two (in game time) I started to get really invested in this world and it's characters. It gave me the same feeling as a really good point'n click from the 90s, it made me feel like when I first played Beneath a Steel Sky back in the day, for some reason. Maybe it's the world building, it's so rich and deep, the writing is amazing, and the art is absolutely gorgeous. I will say that I had moment of fatigue from the sheer amount of reading, and a couple of times I was a little stuck as well. But ultimately, this is one of the most unique, emotional and thought provoking games I've played.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

This stellar noir-style game throws you into the shoes of a detective duo investigating a hanging in a murky setting. You in particular wake up in a motel room with a killer hangover and no memory – apparently, you drowned your recollections in a sea of blissful alcohol. With your partner at your side, it's up to you to unravel the mystery behind the murder, exploring the intricacies of the city of Revachol's politics, its enigmatic inhabitants, and the unsettling reality of its world, all while peeling back the layers of your own forgotten identity. What sets this game apart is its striking and gorgeous art style, immersing you in a world that feels like a living painting. As the story unfolds, it takes a turn towards the eerily relatable, delving into the complexities of past relationships.Updated 3 Months Ago

One of my top games of all time. An emotional roller coaster of a game-- one minute, you're laughing heartily like you've never laughed before, and the next, you get punched in the gut with a whopper of a line. You think, "That's the most beautifully written line in the whole game. They can't top that," but then you're presented with another, and another, and ANOTHER. I've played through this game 3 times, and while the structure of the plot doesn't significantly change, the journey certainly does. The art!!! The voice acting!!!! The music!!! The WRITING!!!! Everything melds together in a mesmerizing way. This game makes me want to create art in hopes that I can someday move people the way this game moved me. I wish I could erase it from my memory so that I can experience it all for the first time again.

the only thing that I genuinely think could be better is: the dialogue choices are sometimes (too often) too dumb; sometimes I'll say something in a different direction from what I'd like to say simply because the wording is way too dumb. other times there seems to be no reasonable choice and all the possibilities are unbearably dumb (sometimes at least there's a "stay silent" option). I understand that the game doesn't want me to feel like a genius and shit but some choices are just unrealistically stupid and comedic and it seems like the game is asking not to be taken seriously and frankly I think it deserves to be taken seriously and to take itself seriously.

This game is... Unique (and that goes both as a compliment and a criticism).I've played the game only because it had great review and it was on Psplus Extra catalogue, so I was not "looking" for a game like this. It was my first experience with a game with that many text and I was clearly not prepared.
- Storywise: The story is great: you feel compelled to search and learn a lot about the world and yourself. I felt very curious to get to the bottom of the mistery, so I have completed the game in only two days playing straight. BUT... I have to say that the finale got me by surprise, and not in a good manor (the killer simply appear out of nowhere, with all the evidence pointing to anyone but that random guy that you just meet in the endgame). Besides the poor ending to a great game, I have to say that sometimes the dialogues could get... Pretty boring. That's an exception, but it had to be put in here as well.
- Characters: The characters are probably the best part of the game, it's very evolving to speak with each one of them, you feel like they are real persons who have real motivations (and we have to say that the voice acting is PERFECT). The protagonist has great personality that can be molded whatever you like and Kim (your partner for the case) is a guy that seems "boring" at the beggining but you can "open" him up to you in a way that you see what a great guy he is...
- Gameplay: Probably the worst part of the game that isn't very smooth and I felt like the game is not great in showing you what you can interact with. Sometimes you're close to something and the symbol for interaction didn't appear, etc. The good part is the interaction: simple and direct, with great rewards when a dot connect with another dot of other mission, like a big web that connects everything in the city.
- Difficulty: I've died only once (right in the beggining of the game [5min in] in the most ridiculous way)... Since that, I haven't died again and felt that was because my exploration was great, always had a lot of medicines to heal myself (and I think that was a lit bit easy to get). The hardest part on the game was the decisions during "The Tribunal" and besides having some people killed in that moment, felt tense as hell and really appreciated the moment.
I got a "good ending" and felt satisfied, but don't felt like the game was perfect: it was really far from it (if anyone is curious, I solved the case, got the killer [+ his weapon and motivation] / got a picture from the bizarre animal that lived near him / got 4 of the "Hardies" killed in the Tribunal, as well as the 3 mercenaries. I haven't drank anything, so I got admited back in the 41st Police Station and convincend Kim to join me).
- Veredict: The game is a solid 7.5/10.
