Really loved & enjoyed this 1 as I had to resort to different strategies to finally overcome Bosses who were way better than 2 as it's quite evident they focussed more on quality than quantity.

Though I did spent a few days on DS2 it wasn't a successor of DS1 infact the difficulty felt quite artificial as they had to resort to ganging up on the player as the 1 & only strategy the entire game, hell the boss fights were way easier compared to the path between them

DLC The Ringed City,

Dark Souls III —

Writing two weeks after completion simply because I didn't want to until now. Especially after playing Demon's which was decent but not as good as 1, 3 was SO good. The menus and crafting were streamlined which I appreciate, and the bosses were top-notch. A bunch of the bosses were tough but not impossible. Abyss Watchers and the Dancer did me in for a while, but getting through them feels AMAZING as always. While I think the level designs weren't quite as good as the first, exploring them was still fun. The fast travel off the bat could be better because the beginning areas all feel separated. A small detail that changes the way the fights feel a ton is the ability to walk while drinking the estus, it's less intrusive while fighting or exploring because you no longer come to a full stop.
Unfortunately with all the positives, it has some flaws as all games do. The beginning area is RIDICULOUS with how many stupidly strong enemies there are that WILL kill you unless you run past or go another direction. Firelink Shrine while still good, having it take place essentially underground quarantines it, especially considering the fog that covers the doors, and the fact leveling up MUST take place inside Firelink requiring you to fast travel there, level up, and then fast travel back.
Super good game, the first hour and a half sucks.

Compared to the other souls games its not my favorite but as a videogame its extremely good. I don't wanna go on my spiel on how much I like the souls genre again (see my elden ring review) so I'll just say what I liked and disliked about it compared to the other souls games ive played. The multiplayer implementation is much better in this one and overall it does feel alot more consistent in quality compared to DS1. While I still think DS1 is slightly better, the 3rd half really brings that game down from being a masterpiece. This game suffers slightly from its very linear level layout and from how easy it is for most of it. The early and mid game felt like a breeze which wasn't super satisfying but it was still fun. These are all nitpicks though, the game on its own is pretty close to a masterpiece in souls fashion. Definitely worth it.

Of the three mainline Dark Souls entries, this is clearly the most accessible one. Undoubtedly the quality of this game is better: the controls feel more snappy, the graphics are a noticeable jump from Dark Souls 2, and the UI has gotten more clean. There was a bunch of really cool boss design and weapons, and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the different environments in the game. With that said, this entry also felt like most compact of the three; I did not feel like I got lost often because there weren't too many splitting paths to explore and as a result I felt like I was able to go from area to area fairly quickly. Although I don't think it was a super big difference, I did feel like the overall difficulty of the game was on the easier side when comparing with the other two mainline entries but I don't necessarily think that is a bad thing. The only real issues I ended up having with the game is the lock-on would sometimes mess with the camera in weird ways, and the PvP boss fight in the DLC. I ended up getting the same person who was lagging like crazy which made the fight absolutely unbearable until I fought the NPC character instead. Nothing else was majorly annoying or offensive, Dark Souls 3 is a very solid game.

I just finished DS 1 Remastered almost 2 weeks ago due to inspiration to try out all the soulsborne game 'fromsoftware' before Elden Ring. I'm going to save DS2 for last after Sekiro. DS3 is such a masterpiece, the story is a bit confusing but got me hooked up from watching vids to further immerse my self into the game and it did! gameplay-wise everything was smooth, the mechanics and etc is on point! I'm finally gonna play Elden Ring then Sekiro :).

Time played : July 9th - July 20th, 2024.

Dark Souls 3 is a true gem in the world of video games, delivering a wonderful adventure from start to finish. Once again, FromSoftware has showcased their mastery in crafting dense, atmospheric worlds where every corner hides something intriguing.

One of the game's greatest strengths lies in its stunning locations. Each place visited during the journey is meticulously designed and full of details. From dark castle corridors, through haunting forests, to ruins of ancient cities – each of these settings is not only visually impressive but also steeped in a history that players uncover step by step.

The bosses in Dark Souls 3 deserve immense praise as well. They are not only finely tuned in terms of mechanics but also captivate with their visuals. Every boss fight is a feast for the eyes and a test of skill. Animations, character designs, and the variety of tactics required make each battle a unique and satisfying challenge.

Exploring the world of Dark Souls 3 is pure pleasure. The game encourages players to explore every nook, discover hidden passages, and uncover secret locations. Each found note, each ancient artifact brings us closer to understanding the intricate and dark history of this universe. The game's lore is rich and deep, and delving into it provides a great sense of satisfaction.

It's also worth noting that Dark Souls 3 is the most challenging installment in the series. Enemies in this part, as evident from the very beginning, are incredibly agile and fast, even those of considerable size. I believe this is a fantastic change – not only does it look great to have such agile enemies, but it also raises the difficulty level. We must focus more if we want to avoid taking damage, making each fight even more intense and demanding.

The game left such a profound impression on me that I will certainly replay it – and probably more than once. When I play through the game again, I look forward to trying out different gameplay styles and builds that the game offers. Dark Souls 3 is a masterpiece that combines a wonderful adventure, stunning locations, meticulously crafted bosses with impressive visuals, and an incredible joy of exploring the world and delving into its lore. It's a game that every fan of challenging, atmospheric games should have in their collection.

Started playing this right after elden ring.
DS3 has the same addicting game play, excellent boss fights, harder game style.

It is a great game. I love the world, the art, the variety of enemies and the challenge. There is a lot to find hidden and the lore is deep and hidden just like elden ring. It is very fun to min max your character and still not feel over powered. Coming from elden ring, I really enjoyed DS3, but it is not as good of a game.

The graphics are much worse and the game is much more linear.
The spaces between bonfires is longer and you have to teleport back to an npc to level up, which is annoying.
This game does not have cloud saves which is really annoying for the steam deck.
Can get lost with no map. Elden ring was much better on this account which also created a sense of scale that made the world feel huge.

Overall this is an excellent game, but a whole tier or two below elden ring.

It's a very fun game that started some of the long standing problems that are still affecting FromSoft soulsborne games (like the ER DLC).

Problem #1: The Camera

The lock on system in DS3 and ER has a very hard time when the enemy is fast, large or the arena is small. The camera in those cases is always to close making it impossible to see the enemy's attack. The worse type of bosses are a combination of the 2. For example, The Dancing Lion in the new ER DLC is impossible to kill since it is super fast and large which freaks out the camera. A boss like Aldrich is the worse as he has all 3. Additionally bosses that aren't humanoid tend to be very difficult for the camera to focus on which is why a boss like Pontiff Sulivan is fine despite being fast and having a narrow arena.

Problem #2: Less opportunities to attack

This problem is more applicable to late game Elden ring + DLC. But the problem originated with this game. Only a few bosses were like that imo. Pontiff Sulivan and the final boss are what come to mind.

Besides the problems this game is an amazing time that everyone should try. It feels like the perfect conclusion to the dark souls series. The weapons are very fun to use and fine. The use of a metroidvania style map made it very unique (to me) and had me going back to find areas I could now access. The areas are beautifully created and are densely packed with items, enemies, and places to find. The bosses were fairly easy to beat (usually around 1-4 tries using a broad sword) with the exception of a couple bosses like Friede, Gale, Final Boss, Pontiff Sulivan and Nameless King. The easiest bosses were the Rotted Greatwood, Abyss Watchers (first try), Yhrom the Giant (without the summon 2 tries), and Deacons of the deep. The areas before the boss were quite a lot harder.

"Easy bosses hard areas" is what I feel.

Dark Souls 3 is the best game for someone to get into the Soulsborne genre that hates open worlds. It's not very difficult and provides enough build variety to make subsequent playthroughs unique.

This game is what I think of when I think of Dark Souls. The bosses fit the atmosphere perfectly, the characters are familiar, yet have their own unique stories and quests that I think are laid out better than previously. Although, there a very few minor things that prevent this game from being a perfect 100. One of which is that I couldn't commit to the grind of getting every achievement, you either have to kill a lot of people in each covenant, or harvest VERY rare materials from annoying enemies. Another thing that I dislike about the game is that you kind of have to grind a bit if you want to complete the game as an average player without running into too much difficulty and the grind is monotonous and boring. That being said, I still believe this game to be the peak of the Dark Souls franchise and am happy if they never made another one knowing they left off with this amazing game.

(this was before I played any of the DLC, this review is focused solely on the base game)
Dark Souls III has been basically a 5 year journey for me, as I bought the game back in 2017, stopped playing it, and kept doing this short burst cycle until I beat elden ring, when I finally hard focused on dark souls III... and man am I glad I finished this game. Dark Souls III has one of the best world building I have ever experience in a RPG, and while I haven't beaten Dark Souls I yet, the lore behind Dark Souls III interested me a ♥♥♥♥ ton, even if it was told in a non-linear fashion like any souls game does. Main complaints could come from just missing the luxuries elden ring had, like stake of marika, being able to level up and do more stuff without having to go back to the roundtable/firelink shrine, and some other annoyances I had (looking at you corpse run).

Gameplay
The Souls-like gameplay lives on in Dark Souls III, and while the increase in speed and the introduction of weapon arts may had put some people off, I still very much LOVED ds3 combat and gameplay. If I did have to complain, I HATED how kick was a W + left click input, which would screw me over a ton as getting a kick was basically a waste of a move and stamina, and it got me killed waaaayyy more then it should... but maybe that is what I get for playing on kb+m. The bosses in this game were amazing, with the final boss, nameless king, and abyss watchers being my highlights. However I felt like some of the bosses were a bit too easy overall, as I did seem to first try way more bosses then I expected, or atleast beat them under a hour which did not happen most of the time in elden ring. Corpse runs are back basically, and while ds3 corpse runs are not THAT bad, having to deal with them again (especially ones that include elevators) was a bit of an annoyance. Other then that, I loved dark souls III gameplay.

Story/Character
Dark Souls III lore back at it again. It is a bit hard to judge this one, as the amount of times I went back and forth for this game kinda ruined me remembering a ton of detail, and I also did not do that many side quests in the game, as I felt like they were much more confusing on what to do compared to elden ring imo. However the lore behind this game and the characters still intrigued me, especially the fire keeper and the lords of cinder. While it wasn't as easy to follow or not as good as elden ring lore and characters, Dark Souls III story was still a treat to experience, especially about the last flame and the morally correct choice and the consequences it brings, alongside the benefits.

Boss Designs
Dark Souls III had a ton of bosses that I LOVED, and some that I did not enjoy as much. I believe the bosses that had duo mechanics, like Pontiff were just flat out better done in this game compared to elden ring (sry if it seems like all I do is compare to elden ring it was the only one I have beaten as of writing this review). I also loved the fights with human-shaped bosses, or ones that were around my size. While I wasn't wow'd visually with the big bosses as much as the other game, there were still a ton of BEAUTIFUL moments with the bosses, like abyss watcher phase 2 transition, Nameless King, and a ton more. I didn't really have any BAD bosses it felt like, but Ancient Wyvern was a bit dull (you literally just run around then one shot him by jumping on his head lmao), and I did not like Deacons of the deep. Overall the bosses in this game were still excellent.

Music
Dark Souls music back at it again. Vordt of the Boreal Valley, Phase 2 of the Soul of Cinder, SOOO many songs in this game just hit so damn hard especially during the heat of the boss fight. I don't think I had any time where the music was just awful for me, and my god the atmosphere music were just excellent. I especially loved the firelink shrine theme 2 song just for how amazing it was to hear sad music in a souls game.

Difficulty
While not as hard as other titles in the series, Dark Souls III still put up a really fun and engaging challenge for me. I did feel like some bosses I would just beat them 2-3 tries easily, which was kinda jarring for me, but it wasn't so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard that it wasn't fun, or too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ easy that it was numbingly boring. While it did hover over the easier sides, it wasn't off putting for me personally. The more challenging bosses were SUPER fun in terms of challenge, and personally I didn't feel cheated for any of the bosses, even the super hard ones like nameless king. It all felt fair which was nice.

Nitpicks/Issues
I do wish Dark Souls III was a tad bit harder imo, end game I kinda felt like I was just a powerhouse, and my weapon wasn't even fully upgraded yet. I did run strength build, but still. Camera controls were a bane of pain for me, and especially phase 1 of the nameless king with the dragon my god the camera controls irritated me. I know to "lol just don't lock on"

edit: DLC was peak, esp ringed

One of the best souls games to enter the genre. Linear level desing and much more freedom in rolling makes it easier for the new players to learn and experience the game. But the samething can make replays a little boring since you always take the same route.
Great atmosphere, high level of build variety and the best dlc in souls series (yet). Definite must play.

Definitely not my type of thing. It has everything I hate about games. Undeniably quality for those who like it tho. Technically, superb, just not for me.

This game is so much fun I didn’t even know I was fighting the final boss at the time…every boss brought a literal smile to my face as I struggled (in a good way) to “get good”. I wanted to keep going…I only played through once. If I didn’t have so many games in backlog or that I want to play I would have played it through 7 times (like I did with Elden Ring).

11/10 gameplay

9/10 #beat
