It's amazing how fun this game can be all those years later, some of the game design choices feel ahead of its time. Still wouldn't recommend playing without a 3x speed up button.

The game is unintuitive and, obviously, the lack of colors is completely detrimental to the enjoyability (its a general downside of the specific console) since basically every area is almost the same (i say this due to not remembering any single thing from the 5 hours i played 3 years ago).

Where the Pokémon series began. What a journey it’s been. A timeless classic, I still love going back to the Gen 1 games (and Gen 2). Feels a lot more stripped back compared to later generations for obvious reasons but sometimes it’s good to go back to basics for a simpler quick playthrough. Not a lot of post game content, in the original offering, but if you’ve got the patience and dedication, there’s a nice amount of Pokemon to catch to complete your pokedex. All you need is the opposite game and another system to get there! Possibly one of the smartest business models in gaming history.

Probably the most important video game to ever be made. Pokemon basically made Nintendo, and especially Gameboy what it is.

This game did so much right, and it's probably the best JRPG ever made. You're not going to beat a Final Fantasy, Mass Effect or Dragon Quest game more than twice, but with Pokemon I find myself replaying this every 5 or so years.

It did random encounters perfectly, and when most RPG's have 4-8 playable characters with maybe 50 or so unique attacks, this game had 150 different Pokemon with who knows how many attacks.

The only drawback was the limitations of the GB, they actually had 230 Pokemon, but they had to put 80 onto the sequel because they couldn't fit it on the cartridge in 1998.

If you're reading this, you likely already know how epic this game is. I don't understand how people view Pokemon as a "kids game" but then Persona, which has high school students, not a "kids game."

It's a game, just enjoy it.

Pokemon is a knowledge based game, and unfortunately, all the joy comes from *not* knowing all the secrets beforehand. This game was incredible... pre-internet, as the IP was becoming a huge hit. It's success is the worst thing that could have happened to Red/Blue from a joy standpoint. Doesn't help that the game is somehow both trying to keep all the exposition/tutorial text diegetic, which somehow leads to some of the worst, most backhanded writing I've ever had the displeasure to experience.

Worst sin however? Just not fun. For every moment of great design (and there are some), there are 10 more boneheaded decisions. And this isn't the later entries clouding my judgement, this and Crystal version are the only Pokemon games I've touched, and the series problems started right here IMO.

Growing up, Pokémon Blue was my favorite game of all time. It's what connected me to my younger siblings and fostered my love for video games. But that being said, I had never beaten the rival character at the end of the Pokémon League or caught Mewtwo. While the game was easy to understand I don't think I really understood what I was doing until I got to Gen 3. While I could get to Victory Road, I only really understood that Fire > Grass > Water, and Pikachu lives in the Viridian Forest.

And now, while I emulate games again, while I can look at the experiences of my childhood critically, I'm happy to still find joy out of replaying this game. I appreciate how simple it used to be, compared to the generations introduced since. And quite frankly, I'm amazed at how little instruction/design affordances there are throughout. People have been beating this video game since 1997, and nowhere do they tell you that Ice > Dragon or how to enter certain buildings or what a Full Heal does. So many aspects of this game would be frowned upon by today's standards, yet Gen 1 is championed as one of the best games of all time.

So does it hold up? Yes and no.

There's not a lot of fluff in this game compared to something like Sword or Shield, which is desperate to hold your hand, to make sure you don't get frustrated and drop the game. You just get your starter and are told Pokémon can go fight. There's little instruction on where to go or what to do, just nudges in the right direction when you realize you've been somewhere before. And, while avoiding a slog of a tutorial is appreciated, sometimes this gift can go too far. Bringing a guard a drink which you can only buy at the Celadon City Department Store and picking up HM03 from the end of the Safari Zone are two examples- if you didn't know to explore those areas, you'll get stuck. While I love it when a game gets down to business, I think there isn't always enough hints to give the player direction for what to do.

Furthermore, many of the Game Boy's hardware limitations which limited the UX capabilities of the game become apparent very quickly. The player needs to use 1 item at a time per Pokémon outside of battle, needs to make sure their Bag isn't too full, needs to change their PC Box or else they can't capture a new Pokémon, needs to go into a menu to use specific moves to interact with the environment. All of these things are resolved in later generations, and they're such quality-of-life improvements that we don't notice or appreciate them anymore.

While I'm happy to have fulfilled a childhood dream of completing this game, I think my frustrations with it draw attention to how it's designed to work in spite of its console limitations. For a game made in 2024, I would have no patience for this. But Gen 1 will always have a special place in my soul.

Not good in 2023, but.. french Review:

Graphics 4/10:

For Gameboy this is nothing crazy or out of the ordinary but is a simple black and white with a few colors etching each town to fill the players Imagination! Pokemon like Charizard, Doduo, Hitmonchan, and especially Mew are memorable for how bad their Sprites are!

Gameplay 8/10:

This was something Revolutionary for The RPG genre at the time adding wild animals to catch and train to beat other wild animals is something no other style of game was able to achieve! But as time passes it is easy to see just how simply slow and glitchy it can be compared to new game's mechanics!

Audio 6/10:

The iconic sounds like picking up an item or recieving a gym badge are instantly recognizable but certain moves like Hyper Beam and the repeated Pokemon Cries can really be annoying and irritating at times, especially to a new Players Ear!

OST 7/10:

It is a soundtrack to be remembered forever but has been further improved upon Remakes!

Difficulty (Meh):

If you know Pokemon this game is actually not that hard!

Grind (Somewhat a Pain):

Grinding in any Pokemon Game depends on if You train up a whole team of 6 or not!

Story (Spoilers) 8/10:

Outside of actual Moments there is almost no Story! it basically goes "A kid from their hometown sets on a journey, their best friend is a dickhead, Dickhead becomes Champion for 5 Minutes, Trainer beats Dickhead and becomes Champion himself! But It's Team Rocket and the little stuff like the Experimentation on Mewtwo or the supposed Pokemon War told by Lt.Surge! This Game of course give's memorable areas bringing Moment's of Nostalgia to your head just like almost any Pokemon Game will do!

Game Time 6/10:

On Average takes about 25 hours and can depend if your making a full team but you can exploit this game to beat it in under a minute so not exactly average to say!

Bugs 4/10:

This is what ruins these games like AI being dumb, moves not working, or what happens after you catch Missingno! All of this turns into a buggy mess later in the game!

I expected really bad things by replaying Red since all you can read on the internet is how badly it aged.

I gotta say, it really held up quite well, coming from an (oldschool) Pokémon fan.

Graphics: 7/10 Let's be honest, the graphics didn't age particularly well. However, I really think it has its own charm, hence why I'd give it 7/10 in that regard. The overworld tends to look quite bland most of the time, the reason being the limitations of the OG Gameboy but the Pokémon design is top notch for the most part.

Story: 4/10 What exactly is there to say really? It's a Pokémon game. This franchise is notoriously bad in terms of story and this game is no exception. In comparison to other Pokémon games near that era, it still has some cool story bits such as the Pokémon Mansion logs and the Mewtu-Mew saga, Lavender town, Team Rocket being a real threat with a kick ass boss and an amazing rival! Other than that though, pretty mediocre.

Sound: 09/10 The music in this game is absolutely state of the art. Basically all the songs were reused/remixed in newer entries and the reason for that is clear: absolute baller soundtrack! The sound effects are also very memorable, albeit annoying sometimes.

Gameplay: 8/10 In the gameplay department, Pokémon Red nails the Pokémon formula we all love and want. It's rather barebones in comparison to newer entries (no natures, no abilities, no held items) but for a first entry it's really fun and engaging. What I absolutely appreciate about Pokémon as an RPG is the fact that random encounters are mostly avoidable and not overbearing - take note old Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games! There are glaring issues here too though: Most importantly, the movesets for the Pokémon absolutely SUCK! This really annoyed me because it could've been fixed so easily yet it was released this way. Another point are the many many bugs and glitches (Crit-calculation, opponents not having PPs, catch rates are messed up, some moves don't work properly such as Focus Energy, OHKO moves being weird as well). Since this was the first entry, there was also no special split (SpAtk - SpDef) which meant that Pokémon with a high Special stat (basically all Psychic-type Pokémon) were OP af since the special stat applied both for defense, making the mons extremely tanky, as well as for offense. Speaking of Psychic-types... yeah, the type has literally no counters and you could sweep the whole game with a Kadabra spamming Psychic all the way - feels kinda cheap. My last gripe is a personal one and is especially in regards to the 100% completion over at Retroachievements: the safari zone catch mechanic absolutely sucks omg!!!!

Overall: 07/10 I had a lot of fun completing this game of my childhood. It definitely deserves its legendary status and should be experienced by every Pokémon fan at least once. It still has glaring weaknesses and remains behind the second gen games for me personally though.

These games were massively popular back in the day and actually predate the anime. Despite that, the only reason for a modern player to go back to these is for the old Man glitch. Otherwise, you're going to prefer all the quality of life improvements in the remakes. The originals don't have running, a PokeBall next to the name of captured Pokemon and you have to change your box manually. There's nothing like getting to a legendary bird and whittling its health down, just to learn that you can't catch it because the box is full. Also there's no Key Item or TM bags, and the inventory on the computer is so limited that you may have to throw away some TMs.

Pokemania, it's insania, how could Mr. Eight catch Pokemania?

Somehow, I completely missed the Pokemon hype train in grade school. I was a little too young to really witness the height of Pokemania in the late 90s, but even still it was everywhere when I was a kid. Having never had a Game Boy, or even a handheld Nintendo system at all until I was 10, I simply never had interest in or access to the series, and I continued to brush it aside for the next 17 years. For a while, I just decided the series wasn't for me, and that my general dislike for RPGs meant it was never meant to be.

Skip to 2022, my closest friend is a Pokemaniac able to recite all the Pokemon knowledge you could need at the drop of a hat, and I can't help but feel at least a little curious to give it another try. This time though, instead of meeting the series in the middle, I decided to go all the way back to where it all began. This is effectively my first foray into the franchise at all, and I haven't been spoiled by any future improvements, so while I am aware Gen 1 has plenty of growing pains, I don't know any better.

A young boy named Red...oh come on, you know this premise. Blah blah blah, he lives in this world filled with creatures who like to fight, you know this, I'll spare you the exposition.

You pick one of three starter Pokemon, and your rival Blue naturally takes advantage of the situation to pick the starter weak to yours. And thus you set out on your journey to become a champion of the Pokemon league, but in order to do that, you need to first get eight badges from each of the gym leaders in the region. There is very little in the way of story development, which is a bit unusual for an RPG, but the focus here clearly isn't on telling a good story, it's about immersing you into this world of these creatures who fight and learning about their intricacies -- who is weak to who, what abilities work and which don't, the works.

The game seems really simple on the surface, but I think what gives this franchise so much lasting appeal is that it's easy enough for kids to understand, yet has enough depth that absolutely anyone can get into it. Granted, missing the opportunity of playing it as a child greatly decreases your chances of becoming a fan...but check out the rating I gave this. I am someone who, up to this point, had zero experience in this series beyond friends talking about it. And here I am out the other end ready to gush about it.

Because wow, I adored my time with this. I got sucked in and absolutely could not put the game down. There is just something about this experience that made me want to keep going every time I played. If you need any more proof, my normal game-playing schedule consists of one hour on one game and an hour on another...but I actually was so hooked on this that I dropped the second game entirely and decided to play two hours each day of this, which I have never done before this. The more I played, the more depth I realized there was to the experience -- there is always something new to learn, and it was so much fun to me fine-tuning what my team consisted of, training them up, and working through the progression to discover the next new thing there was, whether it be another town to go through, another new Pokemon to catch, or a new move I hadn't gotten to play with before.

Now, let me make this clear: this game is not perfect, and I'm no genwunner. This game is not without its faults...a lot of faults. Everyone has gone on about how horrible the game's balance is, which is not a dead horse I'm going to beat. But one thing I must emphasize is how bad the item management is in this game -- your inventory space is very limited, and the amount of times I had to go clean my inventory because I was carrying too many things was absurd. Mechanically speaking, this game isn't very sound either -- there are several very broken moves that effectively work as an instant win or get out of jail free card (such as the Roar move...it took me 40 minutes to capture a Growlithe because of this stupid thing), and the AI is unrefined, often using illogical moves (such as using sleep powder when you're already asleep).

So, does that mean I still recommend gen 1? If you're a fan of the Game Boy or like to look at things for the historical aspect, absolutely yes. If you're looking into getting into Pokemon in general, this isn't the place to go -- FireRed/LeafGreen and Let's Go both work as better "where it all began" starting points, to say nothing of the countless quality improvements that have rendered gen 1 all but obsolete and then some by now. I just happen to have a very past-driven personality and am able to look at thing within the lens of the time it came out, and knowing that we didn't know any better, I loved playing this, and cannot believe it grabbed me as much as it did. For fans of the GB or historic gaming enthusiasts, give it a look and see where one of the craziest fads of the 90s began.

I think it holds up! It's cool to see how far Game Freak came in developing these games.
