Starts off slow until you open up HR 3 or 4, then the loop really begins to take hold. I played this and even completed Sunbreak, but I need to do a lot of HR grinding to see off all content, but the grind is going to be very time consuming, so dropping the game for now to focus on other things in my. All in all, most streamlined MH yet, but can lack variety at some point, and complexity. Still great fun with friends

Overall fantastic game, the content is vast and the gameplay awesome. There are some step backs from World and a dislike with anomaly grinding and the speed, making the monsters more aggressive and their punishable windows tinier. The game is a blast overall and recommend it to anyone who loves the series.

Although it's a Monster Hunter and, therefore, has a high base quality, within the series is certainly the easiest, with worse cinematics and worse new mechanics introduced (which, moreover, are broken af), making it a game for my taste very disappointing.

i love monster hunter so much. this game took a minute for me to get into. but once i did, i didn't stop till i beat it, and then when the DLC came out i beat that expeditiously too.
basically the flow is like this:
1. you fight a new monster
2. it's harrowing and you realize you need to upgrade your gear
3. you fight a bunch of other, weaker monsters and get the materials you need to upgrade your gear
4. you fight the monster again and manage to beat it more comfortably
repeat until you get bored, which took me... apparently almost 950 hours, lol.
this game has a lot of the classic elements I love but kept a bunch of the changes from world i also love. ultimately it's a balancing act between world and old-school monhun. the end result is the most ridiculously overpowered player characters yet, and some of the most intensely harrowing fights until you learn them. primordial malzeno? terrifying to fight for the first 20 attempts, but then you realize he's a pushover. even the hazard version. risen shagaru magala? always a challenge. sometimes, less of a challenge? but still always a challenge.
i main lance, so if anything is too harrowing i can usually slap guard 5, guard up 3, and embolden 3 on and tank mostly anything except a select few attacks. survivability and damage is always a balancing act. but also this game has one of the most fun random join mechanics out there. even in mhw you couldn't just join any old random quest, you had to select one.
also, thank goodness they brought back rng talismans and added rng qurio crafting to expand build variety. this game knocked it out of the frickin' park in my book.

The gameplay changes in this coming from Monster Hunter World were definitely refreshing. The only things I didn't like was the rampage as well as the weapon hit effects being a lot more intense to look at than in World.

Side note: for people who are photosensitive I would limit your game play hours to what you feel is comfortable or less than what you normally do as this game may tire you out more due to the flashing lights of the weapon effect. Its even more intense in multiplayer so be careful. I had mods that removed the fx completely which helped but when sunbreak released those mods broke and still weren't fixed even a year after its release.

+66:30hrs in Sunbreak.

A great alternative to Monster Hunter World. It makes combat faster with the option to customize your move-sets and skills with the addition of Wirebugs.

+ You can ride your Palamute to move faster, escape or sharp your weapon on the move. Stunned monsters can also be ridden to fight other monsters or throw them against walls for more damage.
+ Nice soundtrack.
+ Important story boss fights are epic.
+ Sunbreak DLC adds NPC companions that are really helpful; since they practically removed the nice multiplayer additions World had.

- Since its a Switch port is limited with its graphics, smaller maps and less immersive in comparison to World.
- Spiritbirds are annoying, they permanently increase your stats each hunt but you have to bother to get out of your way and look for them.

Slaying the Beast, Ninja Style

As a newcomer to the Monster Hunter series, I got this game because the demo surprised me with its immersive action combat. I wasn't expecting to be so thoroughly hooked by such a (seemingly) simple gameplay loop. Before this, I mostly played RPGs for the storytelling, so I used to steer clear of this series, thinking that I wouldn't enjoy slaying monsters without much of an epic story to go with it. After playing the main single-player campaign of this game, though, I realized something: Is it really necessary for an RPG to always tell a story that is epic and grand in scope? Why not tell a simple short story of a hunter attempting to catch its prey, told not through cutscenes, but through the gameplay itself?

As you can surmise, that's when the game finally "clicked" in my head, and I was caught in its snare (pun not intended). The 50 hours it took to finish the main campaign appear measly compared to the hours I'm going to sink into the rest of the game. I haven't played the multiplayer mode yet, so I can't comment on it here, but it definitely looks like a great reason to keep playing.

Thank you, Monster Hunter Rise, for showing me I like challenging games, too!

Very well made game. It did get boring and repetitive though, which is why I didn't finish it.
I was never able to get any other players in hub quest due to it being a significant time after launch. I think I would have finished the hub quests if I was playing with friends.

Great atmosphere and art, but the story is thin.

--Japanese Practice--
There is a decent amount of reading in this game, but compared to the amount of time hunting monsters it is relatively small.
There is significant use of more advanced words and kanji, and a number of made up words written in kanji so it is not very beginner friendly.
Because the story is weak it is not super compelling to read.
Overall would not recommend it specifically for Japanese practice.

My favourite entry in the Monster Hunter series so far. The combat is faster than other entries thanks to the wirebug. Each weapon handles differently and alow for multiple playstyles especially when paired with the vast variety of skills available. Unfortunately, knocked down a point due to the tedious chore of having to collect spiribirds to boost your stats instead of the use of items present in other entries. Also, the inclusion of "rampage" quests (the game's poor attempt at a tower defense minigame) feel out of place and takes away the impact of how strong these monsters really are.

Monster Hunter Rise is a very fun game.

The combat is fantastic with good variation of playstyles by switching weapons. The monsters are really fun and unique. There are so many monsters and they all act differently. They feel like real animals with how much depth there is in their sound design, animations and things like that.

The equipment system is fantastic and uses very fun RPG stats and skills, which makes you able to make many different builds. The weapon system is also very fun and builds upon the previous games like Monster Hunter World by adding new types of attacks through the wirebug system. The music is very good and varied. I love how every monster has their own theme, which adds a lot of unique personality to the monsters.

The graphics are noticably worse than Monster Hunter World. There are many other things I preferred in World like level design, event quests, visual design, clutch claw, but Rise still has a unique identity. I also loved how Rise fixed the coop by not forcing you to watch cutscenes before being able to group up.

The TL;DR is that MHRise is really good on its own if a little controversial with some changes. I can't help but compare it to my experience as being mostly a World baby with some experience playing MH3U. However, it manages to play very differently, for better and worse. The wirebugs are integral to gameplay, and probably are something that won't comeback, but so many more mechanics just feel incredibly tight and fun along with many new and returning monsters to battle. The game is incredibly Japanese AND anime (not as much as MHXX) in mood and tone, which is up to player preference. Newcomers would probably still be better off playing World (in terms of the series' direction), but this is still a really solid and fun entry in a legendary series with some great mobility, music, and vibrancy - it has one of my favourite versions of Proof of a Hero too.

This was written after beating Sunbreak's main story. So, I am a bit hazy on the details of when and how long it took me to beat it. Monster Hunter Rise (MHR) was admittedly a game I was too afraid to commit to, but I managed to jump right back into arguably one of the most impactful games I have played - both literally while playing and for how much it sucks me in.

I had only played MH3U up to just after Lagiacrus, which is where I first had some fun with the game. Though, it hadn't really clicked with me at the time to keep playing solo. MHW changed that completely by being fully updated and having a "story" you can go through. I know the story of Monster Hunter games generally follows the same trends, and it's a vehicle to introduce you to monsters you'll hunt over a thousand times, but the music and cinematics helped solidify my staying. I dug the scale of events and sheer, dare I say, epicness that ensued with all the cutscenes, Dragonators, and new voice acting. It all clicked with me.

So, after Iceborne came out, I already "fell out" so I always wanted to go back before Rise. Knowing that Rise would take from both the older games and World interested me. When it first came out, I initially bounced off the demo because something was missing from the "feel" for me. Also, it was hard to go back to the framerate on the Switch. I opted to wait for PC, but that was also around the time Sunbreak would come out. Flashforward nearly two years later, and also after they "finished" development, I finally got a friend to play with me. And, what a journey back.

The strong Japanese theme coursing throughout the veins, stunning mobility and verticality with wirebugs, and new weapon enhancements encompass a very feature-packed monster-hunting experience with some controversial changes. Everything in this game is either faster or made more accessible. To the point where some legacy mechanics or items are kept in, but are not really "used" because there simply is no point unless you're a speedrunner. And it's important to realize just how MUCH is hastened because this feels like it was built with "I am speed" as the main motto. Gathering points are just hit once to get everything, wirebugs can be used with even delivery quests, and monsters all play in a way that ushers you to use wirebugs. If you don't adjust and use wirebugs, you will most likely fail in the last ranks. The story scale and cinematics are definitely a step down from MHW for me, but they were still fun enough to go through. I just didn't really connect with the characters or village as much as I'd hope. Rampages ended up being a slightly annoying TD game diversion, but the music in it was great!

Still, it's always enjoyable to go through the monsters, learn their movesets again, explore the maps, and relax and gather or sweat and fight. The flagship monster, Magnamolo, is a little boring because he is reminiscent of Zinogre with a purple blast ailment and explosive tail. The Japanese theme is hit-or-miss, personally, I thought it was alright but I did miss the vibe of the previous games. However, this was contrasted later in Sunbreak with a very heavy "Western" counterpart. Nonetheless, the new music was probably my favourite part of the Japanese aesthetic since I really enjoyed how they incorporated many traditional instruments. Lastly, for the weapons, I really only play Blademaster weapons like Greatsword, Gunlance, Longsword, and Charge Blade. So, I can say that these all got a massive glow-up, besides maybe Charge Blade feeling underwhelming to use. Nearly every weapon gets a counter because this is MHRise and everything is fast and anime is the name of the game. This partially contributes to why I think it may not be the best game to enter the series with, but I stop thinking about that whenever I hit multiple LS counters or a GS Rage Slash.

Overally, I honestly really enjoyed my time more than I thought I would. The scale was not as big as MHW and I bounced off when I played the Switch demo years back. But, Capcom got its claws in me again! This is why MonHun remains the king of hunting!

Overall a really good game, but I stopped right after completing all the Gathering Hub key quests and didn't even feel like getting the DLC or playing online either. I played over 500 hours of World, but this game for some reason didn't have the same pull....maybe it's not the game itself but rather me being at a different point in life to where I can't see myself dedicating that amount of time to a game...idk but thought it was worth mentioning...

This is one of my favourite games of all time. Absolutely addictive, absolutely fun, it's just amazing... Where to start... Ok let's try:

Story - "Picture this: in a remote village, humans are at the mercy of powerful monsters. In order to cull their onslaught powerful hunters are called upon. You have to choose one (or more) of 14 different weapons that you will need to really master if you are to take in the challenges coming your way."

Background - This was my first monster hunter game and oh boy I think I got on the ride at the right time. I remember playing the demo and not being impressed. I wanted to like it, the weapons and armour looked amazing and the setting as well. It is one of the most good-looking games on the switch but for some reason it didn't click with me.

Then I bought it, played it a little and put it down. For one reason or another I picked it up again and this time I tried to figure it out. With help from YouTube weapon tutorials I wanted to find out why people liked this game so much why they recommended it over and over again. It was sometime after the starting campaign when it clicked. Multiplayer is everything.

Dont get me wrong, now that I know what I'm doing, I can actually pull my weight and I can enjoy a lovely solo 1v1 against monsters, but this game shines when you're playing with friends. It took me back to playing Phantasy Star Online; a team of heroes alone in an alien planet with alien flora and fauna. My favourite part of PSO were the bosses and this game is ALL about the bosses, it's all you do, every single monster is a boss.

Take the first boss, the Great Izuchi. It took me half an hour to take it down on my first try. But the more you do it, the better you get at it, you start to feel like a hunter. Not from the cinematics or dialogue, but from the gameplay. Gameplay is king and this game is all about gameplay.

I've tried getting my friends to play it with me, and they get excited with the way I describe the game but they're not willing to put in the hours to master the weapons and give up after dying a couple of times in a single monster. I found this strange as many of them enjoy games like dark souls where all you do is die over and over again. Monster hunter is not about dying over and over, it's about observing, learning and executing. It's about listening, it's about companionship, it's about cooperation.

Gameplay - a monster attacks the town, you go fight the monster, you kill it or capture it, you use his skin for clothes, his fangs and claws for weapons and his skull for helmets and you get stronger. Then another monster attacks, you rinse and repeat.

The best part of the game is mastering the art of the hunt. Mastering your weapon, mastering the map, mastering the fight.

There are tutorials in the game but most of them are useless, just go on Youtube and learn straight from the pros. I absolutely recommend this as it really opened up the game for me.

I started with the great sword and although it was absolutely fun duking on monsters, the gameplay became a bit too simple for me. So I moved to the gunlance and oh boy, was it a blast - pun absolutely meant.

You've probably seen an old-school rifle with a pike. In monster hunter there's a similar weapon, except instead of a rifle, you carry that a cannon. The gunlance has three main ways to be played and there's a special move called the "blast dash". Using the blast dash allows you to literally fly across the map. - absolutely amazing.

There's 12 other weapons, each of them have their awesome quirks and features, but the same way a good film needs a good villain, a good monster hunter game needs good monsters... And these monsters don't disappoint.

There are some good fights and you've got to really observe and react accordingly. All moves are telegraphed, so be patient and strike when you can, not when you want. This is the finesse that many players miss about this game. It is not a "pick up and play" or a "button masher". You need precision, you need to line up your hunter the correct way towards the monster and strike in the correct place.

Did I mention there are hitzones? Yes if you hit the monsters tail with a sharp object one too many times, it will literally come off. Horns are the same, as well as extensions to arms and legs. Any part of the monster that takes too much damage will show and it is glorious.

You are all that stands between a village of farmers and these monsters, who would tear through a village in no time. This game is the glorification of big game hunting to the extreme.

One of my all time favourite games, only enhanced by the expansion. Great game.

Score: 64% Grade: D
Summary: Fans of the series may enjoy this entry if they've played out others. Otherwise, it's a competent game with too many drawbacks to merit such a significant time investment.

* Exceptional Qualities *
None.

+ Strengths +
None.

- Weaknesses -
I generally avoid comparing a game to others in its series. MH:World is better, but even standing alone, MH:Rise leaves so much to be desired.
-Length: The game fails to justify its HUGE length and respect one's time. Fights are meant to feel like epic battles, but they usually just feel tedious, and you'll have to do them multiple times to be advance.
-Level Design: Cramped, boring, and with a dated look. Ostensibly this was done to emphasise wall running and the grappling bugs, yet traversal felt clunky and confining.
-Multiplayer: Nonexistant at low ranks and extremely convoluted to access, and is lobby-based instead of seamless when you do. Content was split for single and multi, but your experience and gear aren't, which feels disjointed. Regardless, it feels lonely solo.
-Information Delivery: Truly abysmal. The game is extremely complex and crucial information is often buried or omitted entirely. And yet, you're inundated with bombastic pop-ups. The most fun aspect of the game, the combat, is horribly neglected.
-Controls: Awful, unintuitive button mapping. Limited rebind options (controller or keyboard). Feels amateur or dated.
-Story: There's only a setting, no story. I didn't deduct points since the game made no effort to pretend otherwise, but it's disappointing after MH:World's fun story.

The Monster Hunter formula is a golden goose that doesn’t disappoint. Most of the quality of life changes from World are here, from the infinite whetstone to the easy item collecting and fewer loading screens. New additions are mostly movement based. Characters can zip through the air using what’s called a wirebug (basically it’s a grappling hook). It gives great mobility and speed to every hunter. Combined with wall climbing, each stage has a fantastic sense of verticality similar to MH World.

If you’re looking for a review from a rather new mh franchise player and you’re wondering if you should get this game or not, let me do my best for you.

The game is a good balance of slow and fast, at the beginning you might feel there’s a lot of npc dialogue and slow gameplay, but it speeds up rather quickly and fights get harder very fast, especially in your hub quests (which are significantly harder than village quests). Gear will be obtained quickly most of the time, however, occasionally there will be gear that requires a certain rare item you’ll likely need to kill the same monster over and over for. So yes, the game is Grindy in a sense, especially if you choose to play the dlc.

The game is not for everyone, but if you like to beat huge monsters and be a hero, fight a wide variety of Wyverns and dragons, building better gear as you go, this game is for you. The combat CAN be frustrating at times and can be a little rage inducing, as obviously when you’re faced with 70+ large monsters, some will not be to your taste or feel less fun than others, but there is a balance and it’s rare that a monster will feel unfinished or unfair.

I will say that the storyline is not the best, and fights outside of the storyline will be significantly better and more fun, however, that’s okay as it’s still enjoyable.

If you’re going to buy this game, let me say that it’s gonna be either one of two things. You’ll either play casually, on and off, maybe not play for a while after getting your fill. Or you will absolutely love this game and spend HOURS playing, as a lot of the time hunts take 10-20 minutes each, and you get lost doing a bunch of them, suddenly hours have gone by. It is a fantastic game to kill time.

Very much a fan of the game. The controls felt a bit more stiff compared to world, but that is very much deliberate, at least to my understanding. I thought some weapons could use some more love, and the weapon balance is not perfect (nor does it need to be), but the newly added wirebugs make the combat and traversal so much more interesting.

The tower defense idea was certainly interesting, but ultimately seems to have failed to garner support (I for one am glad it went away), but it is a big part of the original game.

As for moster variety, this was great because we now have more than just reptiles and dinos to hunt (which was the case in World). As you can see from hours invested, this game was a joy to play. I guess one thing I did not enjoy as much about this game was how much money and ores you needed to farm to progress your gear. It may make more sense for you to find some way to skip that altogether.

My very first Monster Hunter game, and boy, did it not disappoint me. I went with the Sword and Shield choice, and It allowed me to understand why people enjoy the franchise so much. So much skill and variety need to be considered, and I found myself holding down my fort compared to some of the more experienced hunters.

The increased focus on movement in this game was such a good idea. The new monsters and locales are awesome, and I think there is a really good selection of returning ones. It's just more Monster Hunter, and it's good.

Monster Hunter fanboys will say the combat is slow and meaningful. The combat is clunky and basic gameplay feels awful. The designs of the monsters and the areas are super awesome though. The combat ruins this franchise sadly.

+ Different weapons to choose
+ Challenges of learning about the monster and its attack pattern and experiment ways to defeat them
+ Love mini game like tower defense

Dislikes
- It gets boring and repetitive after few hours. Close range weapons is too difficult as I mostly got killed very easy so I choose gun as a far range weapon for safety. The strategy is the same which is to set up the bomb and shoot and run away when it came towards us. Keep doing until it dies.
- I didn’t like the fact that we have to keep hunting them even though they already run away, or to sneak attack the monsters when they are sleeping. Some monsters did look scary but some are cute too. It’s too violence for me. Some animals were even bleeding 😭
- The game system is complicate and difficult to play at first. I need some time and put an effort to adjust to it. Wirebugs? Still cannot use it properly LOL.
- Running around the maps to find monsters and things are taking too long for me. Monster didn’t have HP bar shown so I cannot predict when will it die so that bothers me a little.

I didn’t play multiplayer mode so it was a little boring and repetitive for me. Thank you for the experience anyways.

This game is like the little brother of Monster Hunter World in that it copies the big brother, but also the little brother has an overactive imagination so he thinks he's a superhero. There's swinging, there's wall climbing, super weapon moves, and your dog named palamute. Real fun to move around the map before beating the crap out of a monster.

Hunt, carve, craft, repeat.

That's Monster Hunter in a nutshell. In Rise, that basic formula has fiddled with, resulting in a dizzying number of options. You like pets? You get a buddy dog, cat and owl. You want materials? You can farm, buy, raid an owl's nest or send a submarine. You want to tweak your gear? You can change switch skills, swap ramp-up skills, add skill gems.

A lot of the fun in modern iterations of Monster Hunter is playing with other people. Personally, I enjoy dropping in on strangers, Dark Souls-style, even if on occasion I get carted out. Unfortunately, player count has been dwindling, making it difficult to farm for rare materials in multiplayer.

I eventually stopped at High Rank 7, wedged between a sudden spike in monster strength and the tedium of farming materials for more sustain. But Monster Hunter: Rise is a game you can play indefinitely.

(EDIT: I lied. I went back and played some more, reaching HR40 before the mighty Teostra vanquished me.)
