I have Mars War Logs and The Technomancer on my Xbox and have been curious to find out what these games are like. I was watching some Greedfall gameplay (Their newest game) and it felt like this was very Dark Souls-y. Are the games like Dark Souls but with much deeper RPG Mechanics? I've heard Bound By Flame is a Souls-Like but I've never really thought about it until now. What is the best way to describe the games they make like these? I've been interested in playing them for a while but I've putting them off because I heard most of their games are pretty rough around the edges as they are after all a smaller studio.

I just finished Bound by Flame. It's great, except for the most important thing... the combat. It's totally broken. It's like they didn't playtest it. Heavy weapons barely do any damage. Daggers are much stronger than swords/axes/hammers.
You have no invulnerability when you take a hit, so if you get hit by 2 or 3 enemies at once it's game over. Fights drag on and on because you can only hit enemies once or twice before you have to dodge, and enemies have tons of health. You might find yourself standing around after a fight to regenerate all the health you lost, questioning your life choices that brought you to this point.
But I love action RPGs, and I enjoyed it thoroughly XD

I wouldn't say Mars is similar to Dark Souls. It's...an interesting game. An interesting setting with serviceable combat and character development, an irrelevant plot and NPC interactions that are never as good as they aspire to be. If you like CRPGs - or even just action games set on Mars - and have access to the game, I say play it. It isn't very long and it's worth playing despite the clunkiness (it IS an indie XBLA game).

Janky mechanics paired with subpar plot, that's all you need to know. Mars: War Logs bored me to death and I didn't get far in Bound by Flame since there were better alternatives available at the time (played both when they first came out on my 360). I'm more tolerant towards shitty gameplay these days though, as long as nothing is broken from the ground up. These games look better on screenshots and end up being disappointing when you lay your hands on 'em, I bet The Technomancer isn't any different. Won't stop me from checking it out though.

I went with heavy weapons and actually found the game way more fun. As you said, daggers can be a bit of a slog, since it's about dodging and getting a couple hits in and out. But the fights with heavy weapons were way more interesting; since it was all about parrying, there was not any downtime. It was either attacking directly or parrying the enemies and doing a lot of damage that way. Turns out almost anything could be parried, even big area of effect magic attacks. Which makes no sense, but it was fun so I'm not complaining.

Greedfall is still burning a hole in my backlog and I really need to make time for it. I heard mostly good things about it and I lot of people said it reminded them of a Bioware game from before they forgot how to make good games.
