Updated 1.5 Weeks Ago

A superb game! It’s a simple game, where all you have to do is climb a mountain looking for water but it so damn beautiful. You can feel that the world you’re in used to have people living. I had a really great time playing this game.

Didn’t love it but didn’t really dislike it either. All the narrative and worldbuilding is sequestered into missable notes in the environment, but the gameplay and cutscenes do nothing to give the adventure a sense of urgency. From the start I felt no connection to this world or its unseen characters, so nothing motivated me to find and read all the notes. As such, the whole game felt like an aimless climb until the very end.I stuck with it, hoping I’d enter some kind of zen state—there is something satisfying about rapidly climbing from handhold to handhold—but the flow is constantly broken up by dull walking sections. These walking sections often give the illusion of being open areas to explore, but more often than not it’s just a bunch of dead ends wasting your time. If you’re lucky, you may come across one of the game’s few collectibles (ie, cave paintings, stone cairns, or seashells) which actually do nothing so far as I’m aware.
Climbing is the most fun part. Even if it’s repetitive, it imparts the feeling that you’re making progress. In some of the later levels there are a few creative gimmicks to make it more thought-provoking, which was appreciated. Still, there are so many missed opportunities to combine the environmental effects with the piton mechanics. The system is flexible and allows for a lot of different ways to approach climbs, but the climbs are rarely demanding. Normal hand-over-hand climbing and jumping are suitable ways to complete 90% of the game.
It’s a very well designed game, I can appreciate that much. But it doesn’t quite feel like the artistic vision fully came together.

Very visually appealing game and I enjoy the journey. However, I personally expected it would be a game less centered around the linear story and would let you fail as the stakes increases as you climb. But the game does hold your hand and you rarely stand to lose any progress when you make a mistake (you can't even walk off most edges). So it's less difficult and challenging that I'd like for it to be, but I know that's also my personal biasUpdated 1 Month Ago

Good game where you climb a big tower. The worldbuilding is very nice, the storytelling is a little clunky at times but nothing bad.
Game had a (now fixed) memory leak issue that had to make me stop playing it, but since it's fixed I don't have much of a complaint now.

What a fantastic game, I had high expectations from it and was greatly surprised. Such interesting and well executed concept. The story is mostly told from letters, murals and sounds, but it's unexpectedly engaging. I could really feel for the characters on the letters, it seemed like a really bleak world. The music is amazing and the final fourth of the game was an awesome experience. I really loved this game.

A well-designed story rich, skill oriented exploration + walking sim game. The art style and presentation are awesome. Sound and music are a joy to listen to. There is a lot to explore and learn during the Journey and a full completion investigating the lore would probably take my 10 hours of life. I think it's a novel enough idea but for me personally I didn't find it very meditative or relaxing, just mostly repetitive. The creature's abilities weren't that interesting, and the climbing is pretty simple. Accessibility options are appreciated (not having to hold down the button to wheel in your rope is easily the best one), and there is some satisfaction to be gained by looking down and seeing how far from the bottom of the mountain you've come. But I don't gain a feeling of accomplishment, it's not particularly challenging and there's not enough to really make you consider your route. It introduces some interesting ideas like floating jumps and moving handholds but never combines them together. I loved how every area had a distinct feel but rarely varied things up. The clipping issues where I got stuck in the ground were a bit annoying. I almost never had to manage my stamina, and while there are some optional paths a lot just lead to pointless collectibles that add basically nothing. The cutscenes are honestly way, way too long when they happen, especially the shells.
It's worth looking at, especially if the gameplay is of interest to you, I'm glad I played it, but I wouldn't ever feel a need to play it again.

Beautiful, calming, and engrossing. The art style, gameplay, and music (especially the piano tunes) perfectly fit this creation. Jusant doesn't offer anything revolutionary, but it is a good experience from start to finish. I wasn't too huge of a fan of the story, or rather scattered notes laying around. There could be several factors to this, the most obvious one probably has to do with translation, the game is originally in French. I overall found the notes extremely uninteresting and later on paid no further attention to them; I just pretended they didn't exist, and that worked just fine. The gameplay is very simple, yes, even repetitve but also rather calming. It does not feel too restrictive and the simpleness allows a more smooth travesal as opposed to a frustrating one. Being a short game I think this overall was a very good decision, opting for the simple route instead of being complex with tool upgrades etc.
Overall, I would say that Jusant deserves a score of 70/100, a charming short experience.

Jusant does not have a single line of voiced dialogue and yet manages to tell a compelling tale. There is excellent environmental story-telling with letters and notes left behind by the people who once inhabited the mountain your mysterious character must climb in this game. For this is a game about one thing: climbing. There is some walking involved, some shimmying here and there, and some collecting of collectables; but mostly, it's climbing. And the game does climbing well.
Climbing is almost a puzzle-like experience, in Jusant. When using a controller (the game can be played with M+K but recommends using a controller, so I did) you use the left and right triggers to control each of your character's hands. Hold to grab, let go to let go. Whichever hand is not currently holding on to a crag in the cliff-face to keep you vertical quests about looking for the next hand-hold using the left stick. You can jump a little bit, swing on your carbine, and...that's pretty much it. There are a few more things you can do (mostly ways in which you manipulate your environment) but as far as character mobility goes, this is pretty much all you have to work with. And it's a surprisingly simple yet powerful toolset. Figuring out how to reach the next handhold is an experience in puzzle-solving more than dexterity and there are some clever tools available to ensure its not a frustrating experience. While moving forward provides some mild challenge, there is almost never a risk of accidentally moving backwards and losing progress.
The puzzle-solving elements of the climb reminded me of Assassin's Creed 2. My first experience of an Assassin's Creed game was Black Flag, and while other things can be said about that game, the climbing mechanic, at this point, was already of the hold-button-and-move-forward-autoclimb variety that became a staple of the later AC games. When I tried AC 2 (a few other AC games later), it was a breath of fresh air. I could no longer climb every surface willy-nilly. I had to stop and think about the path I would take, if I could make certain jumps or not. Climbing was no longer a monotonous activity but a highly engaging one.
Even the way that you learn a new skill of swinging your arm to catch the next highest handhold was told to me in a sort of "did you know you could do this?" rather than a skill icon suddenly becoming ungreyed. Which made me wonder if I could always do that move and the game just decided to let me in on it now (which is a brilliant way of teaching a new skill unless you already look everything up on the internet).
I digress, this is not an AC 2 review.
Although Jusant has somewhat linear progression, it never felt so while I was playing the game. There is one path to forward progression but collectibles are often hidden in side-paths which require you to keep an eye out and explore your surroundings. And the exploration is rewarding as you're given an insight not only into the lore of this world but also hints to who your mysterious character might be. You slowly discover what happened to this world and these people and how you fit into this lore.
A final thing that Jusant right (and something I haven't yet experienced in another game) is providing a realistic sized mountain. Every mountain I've experienced in a game (the ones in Skyrim and GTA 5 come to mind) have felt more like hills in their execution. It is trivial to get up and down them. Jusant's moutain (called The Tower by its once-residents) feels like a true-to-life mountain with the scale and majesty that implies.

A pleasant experience. The core mechanic of climbing is satisfying. Movement can at times be a bit janky. There arent many mechanics in the game but it never felt boring especially due to the brevity of the experience. The artstyle and presentation are wonderful. The setting is unique and interesting. I appreciated the lack of story. There are notes you can find that provide some worldbuilding and lore but nothing incredible. The solitary experience of climbing this awesome monolith coupled with soothing instrumental music created an essence of introspection - leading me to enjoy the game for all it was instead of feeling forced to care about some narrative.Updated 5 Months Ago

haven't been huge on Don't Nod's more gameplay centric work in the past (Vampyr was flawed but interesting and i've bounced off of Remember Me within an hour or two like twice now) so i wasn't so sure about this going in. add in how jaded i am with contemplative traversal based games of this kind and i didn't have high hopes. thankfully, i loved it.fantastic music and settings with some absolutely beautiful views. the climbing feels great and more intensive than a majority of modern games even if when it comes down to it there are no actual stakes given the mechanics. not sure how much of it was intended or not but i appreciated how some parts have deviations from the linear pathing with multiple ways to progress, sometimes even feeling like you sequence broke things.

This game was a calm and serene journey as I climbed my way ever upward, taking in the serene atmosphere of the abandoned villages and outposts along the cliffside and stopping every so often to take in the stunning panoramic views of the world before moving on again. The story unfolds mainly through notes and letters found along the way, and sometimes of the beaten path. A shame really as sometimes you just want to continue on your trek but worry you might have missed something.More interestingly is that Jusant takes a mechanic that we've seen countless times over and manages to breath life into. Instead of the simple and mindless climbing of games like uncharted, horizon and assassins creed. Jusant makes it so that you have to look ahead and plan your path, think of your stamina and anchor points.Yet I believe it doesn't go far enough, as I never feel at risk, and I didn't feel presured enough to find more optimal paths until the later parts of the game. Regardless of this I hope that game of the future find inspiration in this and implement their own version of this more interactive and involved climbing system.

The game was very pretty and the music was soothing. I didn't quite find the "meditative" climb I had expected. The mechanics were interesting and fun to learn but became monotonous after a while. I'm not sure if playing the entire game in a four-hour session had a negative effect on my enjoyment, maybe it needs to be played a little at a time. You can view my entire review here: https://youtu.be/paosGE9B4NE

Got to give this game a load of credit, it's a game that attempts climbing especially in today's gaming industry where the climbing aspect of the game isn't heavily automated just for this novelty alone, I'd say the game is worth checking out. With that said, many could be put away by the fact that Jusant has no fail states and you can't get any game overs but at the same time, I argue, you don't need fail states for a game to be good. You just need to feel like you are overcoming some kind of challenge or obsticle and Jusant does do that much like games like the Pathless and Prince of Persia 2008.
With all that said, what exactly will you be doing in Jusant, to be put it simpily, you are basically a mountain climber and what you will primarily be doing is climbing things. Sure other games attempted the idea but like I mentioned before, Jusant isn't as automated by comparison, the climbing where you move the analog stick while pressing and holding the right and left triggers. This by comparison to games like Uncharted, Survivor Tomb Raider, and the Horizon games is where Jusant feels like you are solving a puzzle of how and where to climb next as opposed to watching the character do death defying climbing feats, this game feels like you are actually doing them due to the fact that ledges and handholds aren't magnetized to the players hands. There is also a stamina meter but the thing is, you never really need to worry about it depeleting since and falling to your death since you can always regenerate it by holding R3. This could be an issue for some but I didn't mind so much.
Just for this all I mentioned alone, I enjoyed Jusant a good deal. The game also throws in new ideas every chapter for example Chapter 2 introduces your companion to extend plants to create new hand holds, Chapter 3 has disappearing hand holds, Chapter 4 has spirits that give you and extra boost when double jumping, Chapter 5 has wind shafts that can affect your direction where you jump and Chapter 6 has you climb a tower in a specific way so the game never gets montonous.
With all that said, it felt like the game could've had more, like the disappearing hand holds from Chapter 3 coming back combined with the spirits from Chapter 4 along with the wind shafts from Chapter 5, this isn't an outright deal breaker but it felt like the game could've combined all the previously introduced mehanics more.
The moment to moment walking movement can also feel awkward and stilted and it's easy to get stuck behind certain walls.
Overall, Jusant is an interesting take on video game climbing that has a solid execution that I do hope future developers try to borrow from. I enjoyed it a lot due to how much of a breath of fresh air it was from automated climbing in games.

I like the concept of building a game around more involved climbing, but it ends up still feeling a bit automatic (hold a direction and alternate LT, RT) to the point where it's more tedious than games where climbing is just glossed over as a means of traversal and less engaging than games about actually methodically navigating a space like Mudrunner or Death Stranding, kinda a worst of both worlds. The world and story and aesthetic didn't do much for me either, I appreciate the work and artistry that went into it, but it just feels like Journey with less energy and charm. Grow Home would never.Updated 6.5 Months Ago

It was a great experience. The climbing while not difficult, was still engaging all the way through. Love how it looks. The lighting is seriously impressive. My only big complaints are that it lacks any sense of danger, and it's janky. You'll get stuck in environments often. I do think this game could be elevated if it had Dualsense support but whatever. I didn't bother reading any of the pages of letters. Might be too much to ask of a smaller team but I'd love to see something like this with more of a emotional storytelling.
