It started slow and quite boring. But as you get more team members the game starts to flow more smoothly. The end game is great where the selected bosses are harder than during the regular game. Sometimes I enjoyed just defeating enemies and collecting frog coins.I have the impression that people who give a lower score don't know that Smithy is not the last boss of the game. I didn't know that either when I started playing the game. So some bosses come back afterwards but are harder and there is a 'secret' final superboss.
You can unlock certain items (like weapons and rings) through fun side quests. But these are not needed to beat the base game. For the end game afterwards, certain items are recommended.
The platform parts with jumping felt sometimes clumsy, not completely right. I liked the art style and great music.
Defeated the final superboss in 37 turns on normal mode.
I give this game 83%.

Amazing Game. Received this from my sister for Christmas 2023, lovely gift. Lots of humour, the combat is addicting with no loading time when entering the battles. Partner enjoyed the big bird scenes. Reaching the end with the music and scenes of everyone living their life was wholesome. This game is a banger, slower paced game but enjoyable to kick back and play. Ended the game with:----------------------------
Mario: Lvl 23 188HP
Mallow: Lvl 23 187HP
Geno: Lvl 23 193HP
Bowser: Lvl 23 201HP

I always heard about how "good" Super Mario RPG was, I was almost considering emulating the original game years back but lost interest in doing it, at the same time over the years I always heard how "good" the combat in Mario RPGs tend to be and how Mario RPG along with Chrono Trigger tend to be some of the best RPGs the SNES has to offer. On top of all this, I stopped playing RPGs a while ago back in 2019 and I only occasionally dabbled in the genre like with Cyberpunk 2077 and Dragon Ball Kakarot. I wanted Mario RPG to be the first one to slowly get me back into the genre especially with this remake and after all this rambling, what do I think? The game is pretty good and I'm surprised I got to the end at all but I wouldn't consider it to be great.I decided to play on Breezy Mode for this playthrough since I'm not really familar with turn based RPGs or how Mario RPG combat worked, and it's a good enough mode for a newbie, it gets more challenging towards the end but it never felt impossible or that I needed to grind at any point, the weird thing about the game on this mode is that the first boss and the early game were the hardest parts of the game, once I got past the first boss everything slowly got easier.
The battle system in the game is surprisingly engaging for a guy who never really plays RPGs and especially turn based games. You essentially have to time button presses for attacks and defensive and because of this battle give you much more agency than the games of this genre usually would and it made more engaging for me as a result. Not all attacks enemies throw are blockable so I had to watch out.
All though one issue, I did have is that fodder enemies were a bit too easy with the occasional enemies about 25% of the time where they take a considerable amount of damage before dying.
The bosses are more interesting, playing on Breezy probably detracted from the challenge but I did like how bosses did make the player switch between characters and make me use items. I used a lot of maply syrups, Peach was the primary healer and Mallow's Thought Peak ability came in extremely handy for weaknesses, I never thought I would need to use any of this on Breezy but the game slowly taught me into using them and I didn't need to look up a guide and I commend it for that.
Outside of the battles there are occasional mini games, these do an okay job at breaking up the pace but nothing too special, they at least are never mandatory so makes them tolerable by default. The level design for dungeons are mostly "fine" if nothing special, they get the job done with the occasional obtuse moment here and there but there at least wasn't so many that I had to look one up every few seconds.
However one major negative is the jumping sections, I get that Mario is a platforming series but these parts felt forced. One the jump physics never feel precise and it's easy for me to miss jumps and the platforms can be easy to miss on top of easy to fall off since I will be pushing the analog stick to make it to the platform than accidentally fall off. There isn't too many sections like this but the ending section with the 6 doors requires you to do at least one of these platforming sections or do the trivia sections but I find the trivia sections even worse so I stuck with platforming and it makes these sections even more insufferable since it's either do bad platforming to progress or awful trivia puzzles to progress, doing either felt like I had to pick my poison. This was by far the worst part of the game, luckily I only had to do 4 out of 6 doors, if I had to do all 6, I would've quit the game.
A big issue I have with the game is the story, I know expecting a well written story out of a Mario game is basically going to get me mocked, and while the story in Mario RPG isn't "terrible" it felt like it could've been more. What carries the game is the character interactions, they are endearing enough on a surface and Mallow is an okay character decent development but that's kind of the thing, the story is just midly interesting enough on a surface level. What could've elevated the story is probably Smity actually doing things to make me dislike him whether it'd be doing henious acts or the worf effect. He's just typical final boss that barely does anything. The story in general lacks any kind of clear stakes, no one dies and I guess you could say it adds to the saturday morning cartoon nature but outside of the gameplay, the story was just "there". It's not good enough to be remarkable or bad enough to make hate seeing the cutscenes happen. It just felt like it could've been more than being an "okay game story".
The ending is also pretty weak and it's basically just collecting 7 stars and that's it. I felt like the story could've been a bit more interesting.
Overall, Super Mario RPG was a solid game for a genre I don't even actively engage in. I might play and try to finish more RPG because of this but who knows.

A solid RPG that can be finished very quickly for a turn based RPG. As for a Mario RPG, and being my only experience with one, I went into it not aware of what it would be about, the characters involved etc. and I was pleasantly surprised. A good variety of enemy types both original and pre-established Mario enemies. The world designs are small but most have a very different feel and atmosphere making exploring the next part of the game very exciting. I do find that even though the turn based nature of the combat does make you have to involve a lot of strategy, thinking about what items, special abilities to use or what characters to swap out, but can easily become quițe drawn out and feel a little bit like a slog. The entire premise of the game is interesting but I feel that it can be a little bit forgettable at times. Overall, for my first experience with a Mario RPG I had a good time and definitely would be open to playing other Mario RPG’s.Updated 4 Weeks Ago

Good, but simple and easy RPG clearly aimed at new comers to the genre or for kids. Relatively basic gameplay, but a fun and funny world with the typical Nintendo polish you should expect. Some minor QoL and game design choices from nearly 30 years ago hold back the title, but that is also to be expected given it is a relatively true to form remake.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

the original super mario rpg has always been one of my favourite mario games, and i'm really glad it got another chance through this remake.it is visually stunning, the remade music doesn't stray from the original's appeal, the tweaks here and there definitely make it more playable for newer generations.
maybe it got way too easy, but i can't really say as i haven't played the original in a really long time. still, i never had any trouble with battles, and even the final boss was a pretty standard challenge, but the game isn't easy to the point were it isn't enjoyable anymore.
the only reason i cannot find it in myself to give this game i love so much a full score is because the platforming sections are horrible. i mean it. being on the switch, with its disastrous joycon drift problem, didn't help the case AT ALL. it made me so frustrated at times.
nonetheless, a game i'd recommend to any mario and rpg enthusiast.

Super charming and cute, as well as concise. A lot of content in the barely 12 hours I played to get to the credits. There’s also enough mini games, side missions, hidden quests, and extra modes to easily double the time played. Unfortunately I kind of hate mini games and platforming/jumping puzzles. Also, I never say this for any game but normal mode is way too easy, consider starting on hard.Final Grade:

If you are playing this as a fan of the original Super Mario RPG, then you would most likely be excited to know that this is a good remake, the visuals and audio are all touched up with the addition of more post-game content. For that, I wont lower the score any further as it has fulfilled its purpose. Playing this for the first time today, there is much that is lacking. Having just finished the remake of Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door, it is disappointing as that game has every feature of this game and far more to offer. However, I assume that it could only be that way by drawing inspiration from this game that preceded its release so I'll give respect where it's due.
The original and central characters to this game that aid Mario, Mallow and Geno have very few opportunities to develop their characters and so I feel no connection to them as their character arcs resolve. The party character with the most development might just be Bowser in this game through just through the necessity of justifying to the player how he can become an ally, that and some interactions between him and his minions. Overall, despite being an RPG the story and world is lacking.
The fights also feel repetitive, there are far more encounters between events compared to that of Paper Mario which I draw in comparison due to the similar game structure. Something I found positive in comparison was that the the perfect timing of each attack varies across the weapons that party members equip, this refreshes the repetitive gameplay to some degree.
The post-game superboss was a nice touch. As Square-Enix helped make this title it is fitting that there is a Final Fantasy pixel boss homage, the boss' sprite becoming much more detailed during battle like the old FF titles as well as having the iconic four crystals accompanying him as the FFIV theme plays. Playing the victory fanfare and prelude upon beating him is a nice reward to confirm to less astute fans that it is indeed what they were thinking. In this remake, there is an additional fight where Culex achieves his goal of turning from sprite to 3D which is a nice additional bonus for fans of the original Super Mario RPG.
Overall this is a solid game for the OGs, but it can be a little hard to digest for newer players in the wave of better modern RPGs that come out one after another.

The definition of charm! despite some issues such as some boring areas, the game stays consistently fun. I didn't care about the difficulty of the game, I was glad I was never stuck on any boss for too long and was able to make progress all the time. A very fun game, with a great and intuitive combat system and very charismatic characters. The difficulty of the fights is PERFECT and the art and graphics are sensational. However, perhaps there are times when it gets a little repetitive. Many parts of the game are based on: you discover the location of a star, you go there and defeat a henchman of Fraguo. I would have also liked to have gone deeper into the desires that you find in that mystical space place. But hey, I highly recommend it if you like Mario, RPGs and don't want to play a very long game.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

This is such a cutesy little palate cleanser from the bigger way more complicated RPG that get released every year. This game didn't pose any challenge to me and I don't think I died once (also because you can still switch out your party members when one dies). What I liked:
* It's an RPG on easy mode, but that makes it an enjoyable little jaunt.
* The additional button press during combat makes it feel a bit more involved.
* The map is satisfying to go through.
* I like that Bowser is a part of this game!
* The story is nothing special, but it fits the purpose of a Mario game.
What I didn't like:
* It's good that it's easy, it's also a tiny bit boring because it's easy.
* It's not going to stick with me very long because it's just an OK game. No memorable fights, no memorable moments. A typical 7 out of 10.

Nintendo does a fantastic job updating the visual aesthetic of this classic RPG experience while retaining most of the charm. They successfully added quality-of-life features and post game content without treading on what made the original so special. While the above is true, most of the game is, for better or worse, built on a dated foundation from the 90's. While it's incredible a near-straight port on the mechanical side of things can age this well, the caveats of an overtly simple combat system and a story that needed more time in the oven drag the game down a couple pegs. Because the combat isn't complex enough, most of the difficulty and nuance, or lack thereof, comes from environments, new enemies, and new party members. The story is passable and carries the same charm the original had, but sorely lacks an overarching narrative.
Everything considered, the developers did an incredible job with this remake. Without fundamentally changing the game, there isn't much they could've done to fix the issues I had with the experience. The game doesn't overstay its welcome, it never drags, and is constantly throwing new characters, ideas, and mechanics at you, even if some of them don't land as well as others.

Super Mario RPG is a classic that I never grew up with. Regardless, I deeply enjoyed my time spent with this remake. The gameplay is very smooth, fast, and responsive. I liked entering battles. The power up attacks are all really well done, which offer great versatility among changing characters. I liked being able to change them on the fly. I used everyone and each character offered a fun dynamic to the battle system.
The world is very vibrant, as expected from Super Mario! Lots of life and colors in each region, with very charming characters in each aspect. There are many secrets and Easter eggs in each corner as well. Exploring the map is a fun experience and never feels tedious. I don't recall backtracking much, at least compared to other classic RPGs during that time. I also really liked the animations throughout the game. They are set at 60fps and are very crisp when I watched them; it enhanced my enjoyment.
The boss fights are creative and charming, with unique circumstances among them. Many of them were really fun to play! I like the fact that the weapons also change the combat style for each character. The narrative was simplistic, but it stayed relevant in what the story was trying to achieve; it didn't stray off-course nor did it overstay its welcome. It was concise and fast-paced, without impacting its overall quality.
The soundtrack had some fun tracks I liked a lot. The main battle theme is super catchy and is my favorite out of the bunch. The ending song is also really nice. The ending is very satisfactory and I was happy with how the game ended. Some of the puzzles were frustrating, such as the 3D Maze in the second half of the game. There was also another frustrating one with the Ball solitaire.
Overall, Super Mario RPG brings a lot of fun to the genre. It's a great entry to RPGs, and is full of love and charm.

I had a very boring time with this one. If it weren't for the SNES versions many fans this wouldn't have ended up in my completed list. With the transition to the 3rd dimension, very little has been changed from the original such as: no weather affects, no lighting affects, no new animations, no difficulty balancing, or any movement improvements. The only remastering of any kind I could tell was the score, some cutscenes, and the removal of Mario's peace sign. On normal difficulty you won't face any challenge at all and can buy out any shop you come across without selling anything. There were maybe only a handful of fights I had to strategize as well. Square-Enix has put out some of the most gorgeous HD2D games ever made, but there is absolutely no life (only stiffness) in every part of this game. The worst example I found was this one boss where the battle initiates at noon, it cuts to the battle screen and it's sunset, then after the "battle won" screen it's noon again. In my opinion, the bare minimum that could've been done to vastly improve the game, would've been a day/night cycle and some weather affects. On the SNES I probably would not have had any issues because it worked great on that hardware. I also understand that this is supposed to be a very accessible game, and for more challenge I'd be better off playing a Paper Mario or Mario and Luigi game. Remastering a game and not making it the definitive experience is bad. Ultimately, go and play the SNES version and appreciate the game for what it is (easy as it might be).Updated 3.5 Months Ago

Everything else is just pretty enjoyable, I definitly do not regret playing, but I think the super strong reverence people have for this game is due to them playing it on the SNES back in 1996, I was born in 2003 and now it's 2023 so maybe it just didn't quite click that way for me? Not sure, but I highly recommend giving this a go if you've never played it (I do also wanna play the original SNES version)

The game gets an 8 from me but this could have been lower in the beginning and higher at the end. The reason for this is that was absolutely zero challenge throughout the game. This was mended a bit in the latter stages where there were some cool boss fights. The game is extremely well crafted and is also very cute and brimming with charm. It has a lot of weird and gimmicky characters. I missed some real RPG-mechanics (levelling up doesn't really add a lot of benefits statwise or moves) and the game is extremely linear. Still I had fun (played the game mostly in Palermo) and it just was a funny lil adventure.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

The game is nice, not super fun though. I think most of the game was easy and that the characters were overpowered a little bit.The final stretch is very long and I had to Google a couple of puzzle solutions due to its "get it right on the first attempt or reset" approach since I suck at platforming.
Overall, it's a nice game but can get repetitive. It was fine for me as my first turn-based RPG and its short duration is a good thing in my opinion.
Last but not least, Mallow FTW, the best character of the game.

I never picked up this game during my SNES days, so I was interested to check out this beloved game as an adult. I should have kept in mind that a Mario game is never about the story. They're always about the gameplay; plotting & characters are kept very simple. What I didn't think about was how this type of storytelling doesn't translate well to an RPG, which are typically narrative-focused. Kidnapping a princess for forced marriage can work in a fairytale for children, but it's nonsensical for an adult audience. Again, this plot is okay in a platforming game... but for an RPG, reading line-after-line of this kind of dialogue and interacting with these types of characters does little for me.
So then I'm left with the gameplay. The RPG and combat elements are kept very simple, and battles often don't last more than a few rounds, so there's little opportunity for any type of strategy. The game is also very easy, so I didn't feel the need to engage in lots of the game's tools (items, spells, etc.). I personally have difficulty getting comfortable with the angles of isometric platforming. This significantly brought down my enjoyment of Super Mario 3D World. So while the platforming in an RPG was a nice change of pace, I didn't much care for it here. The game moves very linearly, which I kinda appreciated because it moved the story along briskly, but I also disliked because it removed a big part of RPG self-exploration and pacing. The music was okay (I liked the references to the core Mario games), but it became very repetitive.
My final big issue was that I was experiencing some slowdown & FPS dips in some sections (like the cloud city). This is such an old game, and it having performance issues on the Switch was frustrating!
So a few things I did like... this game has the classic Mario charm, which is able to overcome many of this game's shortcomings. The animated scenes were very well done; it makes me glad I played this version instead of the SNES one. I also enjoyed the button timing bonus for attacking & defending. This made combat much more engaging than the typical RPG.

The rotation of weapons the characters use, each having their own timing for the Action command, is a great way to change things up and not let the gameplay get too repetitive and monotone. The cutscenes are a joy to look at. I did not bother listening to the new soundtrack, since I wanted to experience the original one, which I quickly found to be an amazing work of art for a 1996 SNES game.
The original game may look dated in some rare instances (I could not figure out where to go next after finding Monstro Town, some minigames like the Yoshi race or the uphill race felt a bit stiff to control), but since it's a quite short RPG, you quickly move on and reach the next fun bit (story or gameplay-wise). I had a smile on my face most of my time with this game.
If more old RPGs could be remade this way, then I'd be playing more old RPGs !

Fun and faithful remake/remaster of the classic SNES game with a lot of good enhancements. Graphics are very nice and the new soundtrack sounds awesome. I can only dock points for some frustrating timing requirements and controls in battle and mini-games, as well as some irritating jumps due to the isometric camera view. I also really don't like the renaming of Frogfucius to the generic "Frog Sage", but whatever. Overall an excellent game.Updated 5 Months Ago

One of my absolute favorite games as a kid! It definitely still stands the test of time and I enjoyed my playthrough for the most part but the new battle dynamics can make things quite easy at times attacking all enemies at once. And the battle system in general, although ground-breaking at the time, feels dated and I found myself getting a bit bored with them as the game went on. And this comes from a guy who absolutely loves turn based battles. Overall a great nostalgia trip though and Nintendo did a beautiful job in remaking this entire game.Updated 5 Months Ago

This is a beautiful remake. The story is still basic and the gameplay is very much like the original, with some very nice improvements, such as the combo attacks and the ability to swap characters mid battle. I beat the final boss and then went back and defeated the secret boss without grinding to max level. Most of my characters were around level 24. I did not fight any of the post game boss challenges.Updated 5 Months Ago
