One of the best in the franchise, great for veterans and newcomers alike. It looses some of the tactical and unique maps from previous entries because of side content and repeated maps, but there are some very interesting ones, and it feels very atmospheric to zoom in the maps, seeing the proportions of everything as close as they would be in the eyes of the characters, great new feature, a lot of the side stuff you can reduce the time spent on the monastery, but it's necessary to do. The story is also one of the best in the entire series, one of the darker, mature, and more serious ones.Updated 9.5 Hours Ago

Pros:Three Houses greatest strength is its characters. You would think that with so many characters to wield, their quality would vary, but most are excellent. Some start better than others but by the end of their supports, you can see their great characterization and personalities. Combining these characters with a great story does wonders as well. In the first half, there is a lot of suspense and mystery about what is happening. Meanwhile, in the second half, you're progressing towards a clear goal while still having enough twists and turns to keep the story interesting.
The gameplay stays fresh throughout the game with any number of ways you can tackle battles to how you manage your time. Especially regarding which direction you want to push your units towards. Although some of the limitations on gender-locked classes do seem a bit odd.
Neutral:
The music in Three Houses is great, although most of it isn't as memorable as I would like it to be, with only a couple of highlights coming to mind such as Between Heaven and Earth and God-Shattering Star.
Considering how much I liked the Verdant Winds route I would like to experience the other routes the game has to offer. However, the game's length deters it, especially when the first half of the game is the same. Some people can definitely stomach that, but I don't replay many games, so for me, it's a dealbreaker.
Cons:
The one part of the game I didn't enjoy much was the difficulty balancing. At least in normal mode, you get way too many turnwheels such that losing units is almost impossible. Having quit Awakening due to its difficulty I at first welcomed turnwheels as a way to make losing units less harsh. But it went too far, such that even as a first-time player, I didn't lose a single unit, which negates the gameplay-driven stories that a permadeath system can create. (I still remember how I lost all my units in Awakening and it made my game unique to other playthroughs.)

Something that may surprise modern Fire Emblem fans is that, prior to FE: Awakening, the series was actually more known for its home console releases than its handheld ones. While the series got its worldwide debut on the Gameboy Advanced in 2003, it had since received two home console installments within four years, one for the Gamecube and one for the Wii. And prior to that, the game was a mainstay on the NES and SNES consoles. Though critically well received, their impact was limited; it wasn't until the series was revitalized in 2012 that the concept of a home console Fire Emblem game was brought up again. Seven years later, Fire Emblem: Three Houses became the series' biggest success and one of its best.Expanding on the central theme of the 3DS title Fates, FE:3H also utilized a multi-branching story system. (Indeed, its Japanese subtitle, Fuukasetsugetsu, refers to the branching paths of the four seasons.) But while Fates opted for Pokemon-style trisecting, Three Houses was a lot more initially appealing, as only one game would be required to experience all the story routes. The story itself had a great deal of appeal, too. The boarding school-esque plot outline was an excellent decision and allowed for players to immediately feel a sense of community with characters as their fellow students. This made development feel less forced and more organic than it might in previous FE games.
Characters start out as seemingly one-note, but through their interactions with both Byleth (the main character) and fellow NPCs, they reveal their nuances and become more and more well-rounded. This is what makes these characters so likeable and why so many players walk away from this game with so many favorites. While the routes generally revolve around the three main lords (Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude), there are more than enough side characters to fall in love with as well. Dialogue and voice acting are generally good, which is impressive for a game of this magnitude with a roster of this size. Voice acting in games like these can sometimes take players out of the experience, so it's impressive that Three Houses is, instead, elevated by it.
Obviously, in a game with four routes, there's bound to be some degree of variability in how the story is told. That's a bit of a double-edged sword (of the creator) for games like Three Houses, as it gives a lot of content and agency to the player, but usually there's no way for a player to know which route they would enjoy the most on the first playthrough. All 4 routes play out mostly the same in the first half of the game, albeit with different characters, but the second half is where they start to diverge, and your experience will vary depending on which route you pick. Each route also has a different focus, so while one focuses on the deep lore of Fodlan's past, another will focus completely on character-driven drama and the lack of redemption in revenge. The stories range from good to excellent, so there's no worry of a total time waste, but it feels like a misstep that the player isn't given more time to make their decision. The choice of which route the player will follow is made very early in the game, and when the story can last up to 50 hours, players definitely could have benefited from a little more time before making it.
Luckily, this isn't too much of an issue, as Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the most replayable game in the series yet. And considering that it's a 50-plus hour game, that's saying something; ask someone who's played this game, and you're more likely to find someone who's played every route than only one. Something about it just feels so addictive, and that feeling is centered around the calendar system. This breathes new life into the typical Fire Emblem gameplay loop, offering a significantly more immersive experience than games prior. It also keeps battles fresh, as there are several different non-combat activities that can increase friendship with students, in addition to simply wandering around and talking to everyone. The combat itself is just as enjoyable as ever, and Three Houses is also probably the most forgiving game in the series combat-wise; it simplifies the system and gives the player the chance to rewind time each battle. Luckily, there's also a couple harder difficulty modes for those interested in more of a challenge.
There were some rough spots in the transition back to the home console; visuals were wholly underwhelming, feeling outdated on release, and some areas of the monastery would fail to load properly in some instances. Character models generally look okay, but textures often leave a lot to be desired. The soundtrack is a bit repetitive, but generally great—this game definitely could have benefitted from a couple more battle themes to keep things fresh, though. Technical missteps aside, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a triumphant step forward for the series, and represents a hopeful sign of things to come.

I have discovered a new saga to love? Probably yes.Route Finished: Crimson Flower.
This has been my first Fire Emblem, and what a start... I found it absolutely amazing, and I don't rate it higher because of a point I will mention below, but in general terms, it's an experience that, if you like good, epic stories, getting to know characters, forming bonds and discovering their secrets, and a very polished combat system where your team gradually grows to become magnificent, this is your game.
The combat system, as I said, is excellent. I was scared at first, but I ended up loving it. It's very dynamic and full of possibilities. Additionally, the game makes it extremely epic thanks to its god-like soundtrack with changes in intensity, camera zoom-ins, and the visualization of characters fighting on the battlefield. As someone who appreciates those cinematic details, it drives me crazy in a good sense, and I haven't gotten tired of watching them during my first 40 hours.
The soundtrack, as I mentioned, is magnificent. It has the right composition and, depending on what is happening, the tone is always well-chosen, creating the necessary emotion. Several tracks are going straight to my playlist of the best soundtracks in video games and anime.
The story and characters are fantastic. It has good lore, and I completely believe what happens with the houses (no spoilers) and everything that unfolds in the plot. There are a lot of characters, each route and house has its own, and each development is different. Additionally, with each one, you can strengthen bonds and even get married. This was almost what motivated me the most to play—to learn every possible story whenever I could. However, and here is the negative point, with so many stories and characters, none of them get truly deep. The game's story itself is filled with cheap resources that I won't mention due to spoilers, but it suggests that there was either no budget or no time to go deeper. The same thing happens with the characters, and it's understandable—the game itself would take more than 100 hours to complete all the routes, and to fully understand each relationship, it would take countless more hours with countless new playthroughs, plus the right conditions must be met. But that doesn't justify certain 'Deus Ex Machina' resources that the game uses and then never explains. It just happens, and the story goes on. That's why I lower the rating because if that were corrected, the game would probably have a 100% in my personal evaluation.
In summary: play it, even if you're afraid of the genre. If you like good, epic stories with good and attractive characters full of charisma, it is highly recommended. The gameplay is not complex enough to scare off beginners to the genre; it has the right balance. You will probably end up discovering, like I did, a saga that has the potential to become one of your favorites.

Personally my favorite installment of Fire Emblem. Full of interesting characters and the best implementation of systems within the saga. However, it is noticeable that at the story level there were many plot threads that could not be finished in time for the release, which explains certain questionable decisions in some of the paths you can choose.Updated 2 Months Ago

Azure Moon path. Story and characters grow on you, but at least in the path that I played the story just stops at the end, and half of the stories that are started aren't resolved. So be prepared to dedicate yourself to multiple playthroughs if you want anything that resembles a complete story. The combat "pairings" aren't anywhere close to as fun as in Awakening, or even Fates.
The easy mode is so easy you can ignore some combat mechanics entirely, such as the sword/axe/lance weakness pattern, the adjunct mechanic, and even the battalions. The result of every encounter is calculated and shown to you before you engage, so you barely have to weigh any risks, just pay attention to the outcome that is shown to you. Also, you can roll back time almost at will, so there's nearly no difficulty at all. Yes, it was easy mode, but you only get "easy" and "hard" to choose from, and given how difficult Conquest supposedly is, it was hard for me to gauge what a "hard" experience would mean. So if you want an idea of what an "easy" experience is like, there you go. FWIW, when I play the game again, I'll be playing on hard mode.
I found out halfway through my playthrough that this game has DLC. I probably won't be getting it, but as far as I can tell, it has some fun classes in it and the story is good.
Here are some notes I made when I first started playing the game:
My first impressions are that this game is kinda stupid. I start the game knowing nothing about the world or any of the people, which is to be expected, but then I'm immediately asked to start answering questions about myself and the world that I don't know anything about. (I was asked if a character was my dad, and I didn't know if he was or not!) Then I'm forced to be a professor to a bunch of soldiers that are the same age as me. Is this still going to have the dating-sim and matchmaking elements that the previous games had? And I'm their professor? Awkward. Not to mention that SPOILER, canonically I DIED in the first fight after doing something stupid, so I'm not even as good a mercenary as anyone seems to think.
One of my students keeps telling me what tactics to use at the beginning of battle, even though I'm supposed to be the tactician, haha.
So this game just doesn't have the matchmaking element in it. Lame.
Finally, like 10 hours into the game, my students are majorly questioning why someone like me who knows nothing about the history, geography, current events, nobility or ANYTHING AT ALL about the world was asked to be a professor, lol.
Now there's a time jump, and my students are 5 years older than me. I guess I'm at oldest 20 now and they're 25, but it's still kinda weird from a romance perspective.

Building up your students in the classroom one minute (yes, even meek Ignatz can be turned into a deadly sniper!), then sweet, sweet tea time the next or persistently trying to get Bernadetta out of her room - but I promise it's all in the name of dominance on the battlefield. That's what Fire Emblem: Three Houses is all about. A massive cast of characters you'll adore, challenging tactical battles, and three different story paths that your choices shape. As someone who loves strategy games and deep social sim mechanics, this title was a match made in Fodlan heaven. It's true, the game can take a good 100+ hours to complete. But for me, the journey was the reward. Each playthrough felt fresh, thanks to the branching narratives and the chance to bond with a whole new set of students. Both Blue Lions (for their loyalty and strength) and Golden Deer (because who can resist the underdogs, really?) still hold a special place in my heart to this day. Plus, the music is phenomenal – the battle themes had me pumped and ready to dominate the battlefield.
Sure, the graphics might not be mind-blowing and the UI was really clunky, but honestly? It didn't matter. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a masterclass in marrying tactical combat with a captivating story and lovable characters. If you're looking for a deep and rewarding experience, this game is a must-play.

I was really looking forward to this FE game after how disappointing Fates was, but I am disappointed again. The plot is very weak, without spoilers you basically pick 1 of 3 kingdoms and after some conflict your kingdom controls the entirety of the 3.4/10 for the DLC, a hidden basement with another class who live in perpetual darkness? Really lame.
No Dragon or kingdom trying to take over the world, no connection to the older Fire Emblem games, and really no epic plot that gives you a feeling of desperation. While pretty the gameplay is a step back. Enemies that take 4 grid spaces brings nothing good to the game, and levels seem to be more open and less strategic. Just grind your main characters and use them.
Overall, Fire Emblem reached its climax with Fire Emblem Awakening. That game had the best plot, children characters who you created based off who you wed, a real multi-generational story which gave you a sense of desperation, and DLC which enriched the game, recruitable characters and affinity dialogue (which was very well written).
The issue with a branching story is that in 3 Houses you don't ever get an epic story in either branch, just some paper thin reason as to why an alliance is broken and must now be at war. Fates at least had the Revelation story which was effectively the "true story" but there is no "true story" with 3 Houses.
For me, this is the worst Fire Emblem game, but the franchise is still amazing.

Probably one of my favorite games out there. As far as Story goes, its above average and can depend on the house you pick. However the world building is phenomenal. The characters all have depth to them, even the ones that seem pretty basic and two dimensional at first (I’m ESPECIALLY looking at Raphael who is on thin ice)Gameplay- The gameplay is a mix of a school sim (Monastery) and tactical turn based strategy.
VA- The voice acting is very high quality and match who the characters are portrayed. About 99% of all dialogue is voice acted, even NPCs that have a little speech bubble on the map!
Music- I love video game soundtracks and this game is definitely one of the best out there. Since they are supposed to loop and be listened to when you are thinking strategy, it is not too over the top, but also not bland. I catch myself humming ‘Fodlan Winds’ and ‘Blue skies and a battle’. It is also impressive that there are two variations of each song depending if you are in the overworld or if your units are actively fighting (Rain or Thunder as they’re called).
Overall loved my time playing this game and continuing on with new game+ after beating it the first time. I am Golden Deer all the way, I finished Blue Lions after, and am currently doing the Black Eagles now… for those who know… 😉
Highly recommend to anyone looking to get lost in a world for hours with a fully fleshed out world and characters. The game will make you connect with these characters, quirks and all. It makes it even harder when the game gets to its second act.
ALSO give the DLC a try! You gain a new house with units as well as having them weave in the story.

Pros:+ YOU CAN RIZZ UP MEN AND WOMEN. IN ANY GAME ANY UNIVERSE ANY GENDER IF YOU CAN RIZZ PEOPLE I WILL BE THERE. I WILL BE THERE AND BE A MENACE TO EVERYONE. EVERYONE WILL LOVE ME AND NO ONE CAN STOP ME.
+ Byleth baddie
+ Dmitri and Byleth saur cute. Dmitri giving Erene YEeger vibes. The end scene with them was so cute and wholesome and by far the best couple in the game probs.
+ The story line was good but I'm here for the romance tbh!!!
+ I really liked how the 3 houses fought- I like how they fought twice- once as a cute school event and then the second time for realsies
Cons:
- If you play as a straight man I feel like you're at a disadvantage because rizzing up the house heads makes the most canonic sense and therefore you're limited to the red house- and playing yellow/blue would make less sense because then you're stuck marrying a rando student in your house tbh. That's why playing as a straight woman in blue house is superior!!!! The otome game house!!!!!
- Game play can get redundant. It was fun at first, but wish there was more variety in the different battle boards or whatever you call it. I will say this now and for any other turns based game review but I totally understand why this type of game is going extinct. If you grow up with it with games like Pokemon, you learn to tolerate it / grown to like it. But new games nowadays steer away from it and I totally see why. There's only so much variety and challenge you can put to switch it up since the game mechanic is so limited.

Possibly the most replayable Fire Emblem game, each route is fairly compelling and lets you experiment with different units and all of whom you can class into anything you'd like, which is somewhat of a double edged sword. Unfortunately having to repeat White Clouds bogs down the early game on replays, and post timeskip reuses the same maps on every route which is pretty eh. Still, the shift in perspective between routes is pretty interesting, I'd say it's worth replaying the game once, but not much more than that. The story is a giant step up from Fatesawakening. VW followed by CF in particular are quite good, and SS is a worse version of VW in my opinion. AM explains absolutely nothing about the lore and thus was the most disappointing to me. If Claude and Edelgard were playing 5D chess with TWSITD, then Dimitri was playing Connect 4 with a cardboard cutout of Edelgard, and somehow losing against it. If you think that this game will tell a story like no Fire Emblem games before it, however, you will quickly be put in your place as the story pretends like Greil 2.0 being killed is a surprising and emotional moment and like the pope lady with green hair and suspiciously covered ears will not actually turn out to be a dragon.
The maps are the biggest letdown of the game, as they are extremely uninspired compared to other titles, being either an open map with some forest tiles, or a forest with some normal tiles, or Ailell, the most boring lava map to have ever lava'd. And if you play every route then you have to replay some of them more than 5 times. It makes easier difficulties rather boring and Maddening quite infuriating at times because of the godforsaken reinforcements who can move on the turn they appear on, but I guess that's what Divine Pulse is for. Still, Maddening is the definitive way to go with this game, as Normal and Hard are pretty braindead. I can keep complaining about the gameplay but at the end of the day I put 230h+ into this game so it must be doing something right.
Despite its flaws, as a fan of the series, this is an excellent title.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is genuinely the best game I've ever played I can't recommend this game enough if you have a lot of time heck if you don't have that amount of time you can do it in parts tackle one month/chapter a day and you'll have a route done in 19/21/22 days depending on the route if you decide to go for all 4 routes that would take 84 days still very lengthy but if you don't have time to sink tons of hours in at one time it is very viable. Each character feels so alive like real human beings and the game knows it has characters like this so it uses them to play with your emotions making you feel the results of your actions and the actions of other characters lots being very complicated characters. On top of an excellent story filled with twists and turns, the Fire Emblem: Three Houses provides gorgeous 2d animated cutscenes and an incredible ost. The whole play the game 4 times to fully get it works wonderfully for the game as on your 4th time though you're picking up each little detail, each foreshadowing and it's wonderful. It's huge playtime and the 4 playthrough thing might make you think that "oh i'm gonna get burnt out" that's what i thought once i learnt about the other routes but i never got burnt out and if you do feel burnt out you can always do the month a day strategy i mentioned earlier.
In conclusion if you have the time, enjoy strategy rpgs or are looking for something new I highly hope you pick up this game as it's super deserving of your time.
ps if you want to do the route where you side with Edelgard talk to her everyday and when it says its an important decision that will impact the plot pick the option that supports her (you have to do this twice).

I played this game right when it was released, and it completely consumed my life. My wife was actually worried about me and how much I was playing it, and I'm probably lucky that it came out in the summer when I wasn't taking classes, otherwise it might have affected my schoolwork. This was my second Fire Emblem game, with the first being Awakening, and while I already had come to love the series after Awakening, Three Houses took that to a whole different level. Fire Emblem characters are generally pretty one dimensional, but this cast of characters was great and had a lot of depth and intrigue to them, at least compared to other FE casts. After all of my time in the game, I came to care deeply about all of these fictional video game characters, and the second half of the game really had a profound impact on me as you are required to make some tough choices, including killing characters that were once fellow schoolmates.I played all three routes of this game, including the secret fourth route and played them one after another. No game has done that to me before, I usually always like to take breaks from games before potentially starting them up again. But not this time, I literally finished my first route in the middle of the day and immediately started again that same day. That was helped by this game having one of the best new game+ modes that I've ever seen, which really helped keep the enjoyment up. And while there was definitely some repetition in each route during the first half of the route (even though each second half is very different from the other), I found that I loved the world, the characters, and the gameplay route enough that I didn't really care about the repetition. Speaking of the gameplay loop, it really is fantastic. Taking the role of a teacher in almost a Hogwarts type of feel was great, with the calendar system as well, and taking that into the combat worked wonders for me. And growing supports felt meaningful, culminating in paired endings for the NPCs as well as for yourself that felt I totally earned, making the ending that much more meaningful to me. It's also important to talk about the soundtrack, which is incredible. I was head pumping the entire time, and even to this day I still go back and listen to the soundtrack when I'm working or doing other things. In all, this game was everything I ever hoped it would be and more. It's not as pretty looking back as I thought it was while playing it, but that's fine. Even to this day, this game remains in my top 3 favorite games of all time.

Amazing game overall. 10/10Amazing entry in a long running series, definitely made me a fan of Fire Emblem. The story was great, the combat system was the highlight for me it has the right level of fun and difficult. The music and cut scenes are beautiful and excel the experience for me. One of the best Tactical RPG I have played.

It takes an extremely special RPG to be so incredibly long, yet so incredibly replayable. I've played it three times and I'm playing a fourth as I write this.Updated 6.5 Months Ago

The gameplay is decent but the world and more importantly the characters are what lift this games experience. If you only play one route, you really won't see the repetition between each route such as the monastery and maps. If you do play all of the routes, the monastery becomes very boring fairly quickly. Close to a 9 but I think it would've been better if it didn't lean so much into the social sim and if it didn't have multiple routes. 8.5/10

This is one of those games that gets you instantly addicted, combining all the elements that make some SRPG titles a special experience. The Fire Emblem franchise had its setbacks over time and suffered from low sales in the West, but managed to be reborn and add a new fan base with the wonderful Fire Emblem: Awakening for 3DS, which was designed to be the last FE.
After a few more titles published, the franchise reached a new level with FE: Three Houses, making changes, but maintaining the core essence. The ability to explore the Garreg Mach Monastery between missions and interact with its residents, especially the students, is rewarding. In my gameplay, I chose to be the tutor of the Black Eagles house, led by the spectacular Edelgard Von Hresvelg and I really dedicated a good part of my time improving relationships with the team while at the same time getting a glimpse of their distinct personalities. The permanent death option is there if you choose to play this way, which further increases the feeling of responsibility towards the students on the battlefield. The battles are dynamic and offer countless strategic possibilities, although the difficulty becomes somewhat easy after a while.
The grouping of several small details reinforces the affection and care in its production, knitting together the plot that involves religion and political intrigue very well. There are so many possibilities that it is impossible not to feel that the plot is guided by your choices, favoring the replay factor without making this option something boring – quite the opposite! Definitely one of the best titles I've played on Switch.

Really good game and the characters are the best part of it. Story is fine, but it really just exists so the characters can shine. I felt a little burnt out towards the end, but that was probably due to me playing a ton each day… which isn’t a bad thing. Highly recommend playing this if you see it on sale (and have the time) As of writing I’ve only beaten Edelgards route and would recommend starting there (she’s the BEST character soooooo)

Fire Emblem: Three Houses features many lovable characters, great music, a large upgrade in graphics from the previous 3DS titles, and an absolute plethora of content. With an engrossing story that is cleverly pieced out, I look forward to picking this back up and completing the other two pieces of the story.Updated 7.5 Months Ago
