Oh, and I don't get the cookies popup because I'm an American. Everdred has yet to clarify on whether Americans will ever be given the cookies popup like we are on some other sites I've used. I'm pretty sure I block all cookies by default anyway, but it would still be nice to not be treated like a second-class citizen all the time... My question to Sora was actually if he'd have to be GDPR compliant if his site was hosted in America (or elsewhere outside EU/Lesser Europe, aka UK). Obviously, sites hosted in America, by Americans who live in America, don't have to be GDPR compliant because the EU has no jurisdiction over them.

That popup has a "Opt-out all" button that will opt-out only from Ziff Davis and won't change a thing about all the Ad and tracking stuff... That must be disabled separately... Well, it's written there... but still that's misleading.

Regarding the GDPR: I'm not an expert... there's a reason why I would need an legal expert due to the GDPR! It's confusing, it's vague, it's a mess... So keep that in mind when reading the following and expect mistakes!
In general it's a good idea and I think it's a good thing. The problem is that a lot of things in it are too vague and up to interpretation until these things are clarified in court proceedings... Which sucks because one cannot be completely sure if they are compliant or not.
With the GDPR our politicians had mainly thought about companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon, ... and the goal was to protect the personal information and rights of EU citizens even when those data gets transferred in non-EU countries, so usually to the headquarters of those companies. As this was aimed at those big players a lot of things aren't really suited for small businesses and the bureaucracy can overwhelm them.
The GDPR protects the personal information and rights of EU citizens globally... So if you process data of EU citizens you have to follow the GDPR in theory... in reality the EU or any other country cannot make any global laws and so it cannot really be enforced. In the worst case your site might be blocked in the EU... but I haven't heard of something like that yet. It's usually the other way round: US websites blocking access for EU-citizens because they don't want to deal with the GDPR... usually websites of smaller US newspapers (Reddit is the main reason for me to stumble over those small newspapers).
The big players usually have subsidiaries in the EU... That's basically why the GDPR can be enforced to them.
HLTB pre-Ziff Davis: Privately owned, not specifically aimed at EU citizens and neither hosted in the EU nor was Everdred in the EU so he could basically ignore it.
HLTB now: It's specifically aimed at EU citizens (it shows that cookie/tracking/ad consent nonsense[*] especially to us EU citizens). Also I don't know the structure of Ziff Davis, but there is a German IGN website and according to the imprint... oh... Ziff Davis International Ltd, London, UK... erm... the GDPR is confusing enough but I won't start to think about GDPR+Brexit now. I guess there are experts at Ziff Davis that Everdred can refer to to sort that mess out.

[*] I mean this consent nonsense in general, not just on HLTB... It's just annoying as hell. At least Cookie Ninja manages to decline and close some of those.

Yeah, I had already assumed that the reason for the new GDPR popup was because of Ziff Davis. I was a mod on another site where the owner clarified that we didn't have to address the GDPR because he and his site were based in America (i.e. GDPR can't be enforced). I assume HLTB was the same way, but as you pointed out Ziff Davis has a company in Lesser Europe.

That said, I've used sites that have the GDPR cookies consent popup for me, but I guess Ziff Davis has a policy of only doing it for those geo-located in the EU? I personally prefer being able to opt-out, even if, as you say, it's a very minor and somewhat inconvenient thing. Though I think my plugins and Firefox settings might block most of it.

Also, I think I better understand your issues with the GDPR's implementation. Thank you. That was enlightening to read.

Another fun wrinkle with GDPR - often your data can still be collected and you can still be marketed to if the business has 'legitimate interest' grounds for doing so, unless you specifically object (and only some sites let you object in the cookie popup). Legitimate interest is functionally a catch-all term whose presence in the legislation undermines a lot of the good work and progress it tries to do and make.

I see Everdred made it so that you could only see 100 games at a time, but could there be an option to see all games? I mean I get why it's 100 at a time, it was impossible to view Chronja's backlog before but I only have 192 games in my backlog and I would appreciate it if I had an option to see them all.

It should only be limited to 100 for Box/List view. List view was set to 500.

2) I like the changes to the forum home page on mobile! At least, I think it's different - I honestly haven't used HLTB on my phone in awhile before today. Either way, it looks nice as always and I want to give you credit where credit is due!

Interesting that Google Fonts is on there, they must insert analytic tracking into that, which I guess is no surprise but kind of sneaky. That way they can track thousands of sites that don't even use analytics or Adsense.

Should people with their profiles set to Private be on the Site Statistics? I see that Eries is on the Most Discussion Posts list, but people can't normally see the post count of Private profiles.

In the same vein as my previous post, I noticed that the Friends Activity Feed (on the Site Statistics and Friends pages, at least) shows activity for Private profiles that wouldn't normally be viewable.

Would it be possible to have a user setting to turn it off? I personally highly prefer not having pages, and with 755 backlogs I don't have the issue with lag that other people have. I'd love to have the option to choose if I have pages on my profile for my view or not.

I also agree with this, but I understand if it's needed for bandwidth concerns, especially on the box art view, which was something Everdred noted when he implemented it. It might also be that his implementation doesn't allow for switching between pagination and not, which I also would understand.

Yeah, I will not be increasing the limit for box art views because of the bandwidth/performance reasons. However, I will bump up the list view to a 1000.

Currently it is set to 500.

Only 565 people will be affected by this limitation.
