Vanilla Skyrim is good enough for me, especially the Special Edition. The few mods I ever used were superficial things - a map enhancer so you can see the roads better, something that made town names on roadsigns easier to read, and one that turned every NPC into a cliff racer.

Okay, I lied about that last one. That would surely be hell.

I did once install an 'Alternative Start' mod before starting a new playthrough, so that you could skip the entire Helgen thing and chose to be a random nobody and not become Dragonborn at all. That opened up the roleplaying side of things, but it had some bugs and caused some issues, so I didn't bother carrying on. Also, I had chosen to be a Bosmer hunter who only used weapons and armour he crafted himself, used no magic apart from healing if desperate, and stuck to carrying only one bow and one small sword and one set of light armour. It got a bit dull and he was completely underpowered for the world. I sent him back to Valenwood to lick his wounds in the trees.

Final Fantasy II is good

Ouch.

I'd like to know what you think is good in that game? I think it's (maybe) playable, but I wouldn't say it's good.

Here's a few of mine:

Battle Royale is a bad genre. It's just too much based on luck and being at the right place at the right time. I still haven't found a single good battle royale game.
Mario Kart is boring and overrated.
Overwatch. Same as Mario Kart.
Diablo 3 is a good game. Sure it isn't D2, but that doesn't make it a bad game. Gets a bit repetitive after 1000 hours played, but what game doesn't?

One more general about the industry:

Companies shouldn't kill games so liberally, some obligation to the people that purchase it must be enforced, either legally or in the form of never again buying something from them.
When closing online only games, companies should refund everyone that spent money on his games, or release the source code.

I wasn't hit by this yet, but I know some people that love Wildstar and for the little I played it, it seems really enjoyable and unique among the MMO genre. Someday a company will kill one of my favourite online-only games (Starcraft II, Diablo III, The Crew 1, WoW or Path of Exile are the ones I like), and it will be really sad.

Well for those that know me...

Rockstar makes boring games. I can't stand Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption. I have tried to, was forced to finish both RDR1 and GTA5.

New games are objectively better than old ones. Don't get me wrong! I love both new and old games, but it is hard to say that something like God of War is worse than Super Mario Bros., even though the latter is touted as a peerless masterpiece (which it is, but more for what it did to gaming, and for its time).

Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 are amazing games. Sure, they take a bit of time to get into, but the same could be said about a lot of games. Final Fantasy VII, on the other hand, was amazing when it came out, but aged very badly. Where is the remake?!

I am a strong believer that the industry should band together and make one console per generation. Let Sony design the hardware with Nintendo. MS can take over the online network. And they can all have their own controller schemes/wagglemotes, etc. I am tired of needing to spend all this money each generation just to keep up... and with the midgen upgrades? Ugh. Enough of this! Of course, there is room for a handheld alongside the console, but Crossplay/buy would be necessary!

I am sure if I sat down to think some more, I would be able to say more... but lets say this is enough for now!

I think pretty much everyone would agree with you, but let's at least be happy that there's only a few contenders, and Sony and Microsoft have around 90% of the same games. Look at how the streaming market is right now with Netflix, HBO, Disney, CBS, etc. There's gotta be around 15 to 20 of them now, which is absolutely ridiculous. I think gamers have it much easier than avid TV show fanatics. I still completely agree with you, but at the same time there are positives to the situation. If there was no competition, then there would be no incentive to extensively upgrade a console's power, or set the pricing at a reasonable level. At least some competition is needed in the market for these consoles to be buyer friendly. In a perfect world though, yes, one console would be great!

I definitely agree that at the core, Call of Duty is a solid shooter. It's just tiring to see it each and every year.
Skyrim can be fun with no mods. I think the game is very fun. I just don't think it's a good action-RPG, it's a better sandbox.

I think that indie and kickstarted games have more hope and integrity than AAA games. I can't stand the same AAA style all the time. Sure there's some that are good but most of the time the only ones worth their price tag are console exclusives. Otherwise I'd rather look to the smaller fields that are allowed to take risks in game design and stories.
I'm saddened that Obsidian and inXile got bought by Microsoft. At least I'm still getting The Outer Worlds and Wasteland 3.

Any and all microtransactions and lootboxes are scummy practice in games you pay to play initially. I don't care even if it's "only cosmetic" that's still part of the experience and it's something we used to have in games. Overwatch may not be that bad but I don't find it excusable. Game publishers don't need more money, their investors (or themselves) usually just see any extra monetization they don't include as money being left on the table that they could be making.

Fallout 3 is mediocre. Fallout 4 is bad. Bioshock Infinite is bad too but that's more of a polarized popular/unpopular opinion.

I assume you're referring to Xbox exclusives, in which you'd be completely correct. Other than having great backwards compatibility and many of my friends being on it (which is completely situational), Xbox really doesn't much going for it this generation. I do like their controller better, but that is probably because I grew up with an Xbox and a 360. I really wish I could play so many of the PS exclusives, but I'm not willing to pay over $200 for essentially the same console.

And yes, PC gaming is very overrated, especially with how inconvenient games are on them. You're constantly being bombarded with better hardware, and each game has different requirements. At least with a console you know that all you have to do is install a game, and it will run (well at least 95% of the time). I've heard by many PC gamers that they spend up to 20% of their gaming time just getting games to run correctly, and that's a lot of wasted time! I'm not saying there aren't positives to PC gaming, but in my book the inconvenience outweighs those positives.

Persona 5 is more of a looooong list of chores than an actual fun game. It's a horrible design choice to make the main quest/story 100h long instead of, like any sane game designer would opt for, have a maybe 30h main quest/story and then 70h (or however much) of optional side quests.

Xbox One is better than the PS4. PS4 has maybe two interesting exclusives and they're not worth buying another console for. Xbox One otherwise does more good things than PS4.

Dark Souls is a poorly-designed game. For that matter, so are most NES/SNES-era games. And games like Cuphead, Celeste, etc. I don't love 2D platformers or heavily-monetized games, so of course arcade-inspired platformers are bad.

I'd be happy if graphical fidelity stopped at Xbox 360 era. Games of that era looked just fine, and I'd rather we focused on having more things on screen and higher resolutions than bumping texture res and polygon counts. That said, Xbox-era games still look great to me. Also, most "old-school" pixelated games are ugly. Real NES and SNES era games look fine, but these new wannabe retro games are blurry garbage and it makes me so mad that the developers are charging for them.

I prefer playing at 30 FPS. I don't want 60 FPS. I'd rather have a better-looking game than an imperceptible bump in frame rate.

PC gaming is overrated. As much as I love playing old games and VR on PC, overall console ports of games are better. I use a gamepad at any opportunity (except as below) because keyboard and mouse is a terrible way to play games.

I liked motion controls and I like VR.

Assassin's Creed is boring. Darksiders 2 was boring and had broken controls; I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but I hate that because it had some good parts to it. GTA V had great controls but RDR and RDR2 are awful games to play. Well-written, beautiful games, but terrible to interact with. The Witcher 2 is soooo overrated. It's 6/10 at best. Dragon Age: Origins was boring and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is top-fricking-notch.

The only good part of Fallout 4 was settlement building and Curie <3 Skyrim is overrated. It's too generic, too bland, too repetitive, the voice acting is awful. There's too many radiant and fetch quests. That said, mods do NOT make it a better game. In fact, any game that "requires" mods to be good (besides patches) is a bad game. If Skyrim needs mods, it's a bad game and shouldn't be sold for money. I repeat: making money off other people making free content for you is NOT OKAY!

KOTOR 2 was great on Xbox One and I encountered no bugs. Fallout 3 and New Vegas were also fine on console; no bugs. Skyrim was fine on console except it bugged an achievement and has the worst UI of any Gamebryo engine game. Except Fallout 4, which made it even worse. In short: these games are more than playable on console!

Also Bethesda Game Studios is the worst developer in history. I'm concerned that inXile Entertainment and Obsidian Entertainment are both going downhill, but don't think Microsoft will make things worse.

I'll make another post if I remember anything else.

Steam is the worst store front. I don't care about the technical achievements or otherwise consumer-friendliness; it's a very poorly-managed, unsustainable store front now, and it's far worse compared to GOG, Epic Games Store, Xbox Live or even PSN.

Also Bioshock 2 was better than Bioshock 1 in almost every way (though 1 let you backtrack and was still a good game).

I prefer the first Portal too.

I think The Last Revelation is the best Tomb Raider game ever.
MediEvil 2 > MediEvil.
Grand Theft Auto III > Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Grand Theft Auto IV > Grand Theft Auto V.
Smuggler's Run is one of the greatest Rockstar Games series.
The Red Star is one of the best PS2 games.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Silent Hill: Downpour are both great.
