Of course, you simply set up a dedicated or a listen server, it might require opening a few network ports depending on the game so people can connect. I've never needed to use hamachi for anything unless the multiplayer facilitator was no longer functioning, like for games that required gamespy or something.

I have seen some newer faces about, and the steam sale going on has gotten some folks picking up new titles.

If you invite me to a game and I don't respond its likely that I am afk and just left myself logged in, or in the middle of a non-steam game and didn't see the message.
