I have quite a large list of games I plan on playing and my own weird and regimented system, but this seems like a really cool challenge. I won't aim to complete it specifically, but I thought it would be interesting to see what I end up passively completing as time goes on. I'll check in monthly to see how I do! (Side note, this is actually my first post on the forum. Go me!)
I'm going in with completely no plan or prioritization so we shall see how it goes! Only a few games in and I can already tell assigning new games will be tricky... I will have to be careful.
Throughout the month of January I played 5 games and have started a 6th. Those are...
Wildermyth (PC)
Half-Life (PC)
Spyro The Dragon (PS1)
Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings (PC)
Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain (PC)
God of War (PS2)
🆕 - Newly Completed
✅ - Completed
⏯️ - Now Playing
❌ - Not Completed
I can already tell I will regret some of these placements, and I fussed over them a lot more than I thought I would. What a fun challenge! I hope to do the best I can.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I've been eyeing this challenge for a while and I thought I mind as well actually try to do it this time! No idea how well I'll do with this, but I'm going to try not to stress too much about it lol. Still have a lot of empty spaces that I'm not sure what to do with, but I tried to fill in as many as I could.
January wasn't really a great month for gaming in general, so I only beat one game. Thankfully I was able to throw it on a prompt-thing that I didn't have something for though lol.
✅️34. A bright and cheerful game - Atelier Lydie & Suelle
I also made a collection for it cause why not lol. Here: https://howlongtobeat.com/user/laurenhiya21/lists/29730/Gaming-Challenge-2024

Thank you! It's a pretty fun time and pretty impressive for a game made in a week. A little janky, but definitely charming overall. (Bias notice: Celeste is my favorite game I've ever played)
And now you can use it as a game that's on my challenge list, if you needed one!

This seems good and fun! I want in on this!!
Current total at time of recording: 3/50(3/59)
Here's what i've got for my list this year so far:
34. A bright and cheerful game - En Garde! (https://steamcommunity.com/id/futome/recommended/1654660/) (This game is quite good please play it.)
40. A post-apocalyptic game - Death's Door (I put this here because the game takes place in a time period where nothing is being born, so the world is quietly dying. The atmosphere of the game is very sombering.)
09-1. A remake or remaster of a game - Super Mario RPG (Pretty great remake! Though the limited combat options and high damage unblockables dampered the experience)
Gonna put this here until I lock-on to a target I like of a game that I potentially own!
DM me your favorite game in my inbox! I wanna know!

Hey everyone.
I've come across this challenge totally unintentionally, but I'm glad I did. I had such a great time making a list of games based in the challenge descriptions to the point that something inside me sparkled making me want to finish games that I've left in the backlog for so long.
So here I am sharing my collection of games that I intend to finish this year (hopefully).
https://howlongtobeat.com/user/bolinha226/lists/32293/bolinha226s-HLTB-2024-Challenge
(I'm still missing some, but in time I'll fill it out)
Hope to see more of other user's lists in the future!
EDIT: Feel free to message me with your favorite game or recommend me some. I'm still trying to fill this category :)

13. A game whose title could describe your life Cocoon ✅ Completed Feb 2nd
Because of how much I sleep
36. A game that heavily features either fire or ice. Arise: A Simple Story ✅ Completed Feb 20th
Level where you control the ice melting and a level or two with fire

February Update
You can find my master list at here.
To reach my goal of finishing around 30 challange catagories this year, I really am focusing my backlog game selection around the challange. I am also trying to select games that can go into multiple catagories allowing me the flexibility of moving them around if I need too.
This month I finished 5 games, and they all neatly fit into the challange:
Added:
15. A game that heavily focuses on flight - AER: Memories of Old
17. A game that is themed around dogs or cats - Cats are Liquid - A Light in the Shadows
33-2. A spin-off game - Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
44-1. A game you previously retired or put on hold - Crysis
46-1. A studio's very first game - Wolfenstein: The New Order
AER: Memories of Old is a game about a shape-shifting girl who has to explore a land of floating isles to discover and fulfil her destiny. This is a game that can fit into many categories – it has a female protagonist and a title with a subtitle – but the fact that the girl shapeshifts into a bird and traverses between the isles by flying, placed it nicely into that category of games that focus heavily on flight.
I am not a cat person, and games that are themed around dogs are quite rare. I suspect that this category was created with “Stray” in mind, but when you don’t have anything in your backlog that is even close, you can either buy something or reach into the bundle for Ukraine. Cats are Liquid - A Light in the Shadows did come with the bundle and is a casual 2D platformer starring a cat. I guess it will have to do.
I originally played Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales thinking it would go into the female protagonist category. I do have lots of backlogged games with a female protagonist, so I tried to slot it into something else. The game is a mash of RPG and Deck Building, so that was an option, but in the end, I went for a spin-off as it is a clear spin-off from the Witcher series.
Crysis is not a game I particularly liked. I have it on physical media that I bought years ago when a game shop was going under and sold all its stock for dimes. It has SO many bugs and crashes every 30 minutes. At some point, I encountered a bug that prevented a level-end script from executing and could not progress further. I threw the game back into the cupboard and retired it for 6 months or so. Later I did read about the issue and dug the game out of the cupboard, loaded an old save and manage to avoid that crippling bug, and somehow got through the whole thing. Like I said -- I did not enjoy Crysis, but the experience at least allows me to put the game into the “A game you previously retired or put on hold” category.
Last on this update is Wolfenstein: The New Order. That was supposed to go into the game with a subtitle category – but what do you know, it’s MachineGames first game! That is not a bad debut!

Febuary update!
Ended up finishing only 4 games that fit in categories totalling (33h) but I have been grinding on Baldur's Gate 3, which is a mammoth of a game to finish and played a lot of Minecraft with friends and in total I played (~141h) this month.
10. A game with 6+ endings - As Dusk Falls - Good story, really bad technical difficulties but ends up being a fun game.
24. An arcade-style high score game - Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 - Great Pac game with new mechanics that keep it fresh.
47. A game that had its HLTB times on a purple/red/gray background - Drift86 - Fun arcade drifting game, but nothing more than that.
50. A game chosen by the HLTB randomizer - Bionic Commando 1987 - Still can't believe this game is about reviving Hitler, it's a really bad and hard but unique.
Here is my current progress, and the games I'm playing/planning to play.
Collection Link
Slowing down on completion amounts because of BG3 which I'm having fun, but it's so huge that it's hard to finish, but hope to finish it soon enough and get back to playing more games (Kinda miss the wider variety of games played).

Five challenges finished in February. Major drop from last month but I had a lot of bigger games to play too.
Here's my collection: https://www.howlongtobeat.com/user/R2D21999/lists/29881/R2D21999-2024-Challenge
12. A game recommended to you by someone else - Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age - I'm sure some of you are familiar with this, the game that a certain AlphaOmega has surely recommended to everybody in the HLTB Discord at this point. Also fitting that it's at 12.
14-1. A game with an alliterative title - Frog and Flies - This is also known as Frog Bog depending on where you're from.
15. A game that heavily focuses on flight - Kid Icarus: Uprising - Half the game is about flying!
20-2. A game set in the far future - Xenoblade Chronicles X - It's never actually clear just how far in the future this game is, especially since it's explained that the Earth has blown up in the very beginning of the game. However, just from the technology alone, it's clear that this is not near our time.
29. Another person’s favorite game - Summon Night: Swordcraft Story - FrozenRoy's said in previous Game Challenge years that its his favorite, I believe he's even told me as much a few weeks ago when I started it.

It's time for my February update! I beat God of War (PS2) as well as 4 others. I forsee the next few months (especially March) to be quite busy times for me so I doubt I'll be able to hit these kind of numbers again, but I was at least able to take advantage of some free time in the early part of the year! The game's I've beaten in February are as follows, as well as their classification! Thanks to Ayzic for playing Before Your Eyes, allowing me to use it as my "game on another person's list" title.
God of War (PS2)
The Secret of Monkey Island (PC)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (DS)
Vigilante 8 (PS1)
Before Your Eyes (PC)

⏯️ - Now Playing

No overlaps so far! I have basically no idea what I'll be playing in the upcoming months so my attempt at strategy is trying to fill what I think are the most unique prompts, hopefully it pays off!

Slow month, only completed 1 game in March.
11. A collection of games ✅ WarioWare Gold Completed March 27th
Got my first handheld between the Game Boy Pocket I had as a kid and the Switch, in the 3DS, of which I of course wanted to homebrew. Ended up having a lot more fun than I expected in WarioWare Gold given minigames are not completly my thing.

Thirteen challenges finished in March. Making good progress!
Here's my collection: https://www.howlongtobeat.com/user/R2D21999/lists/29881/R2D21999-2024-Challenge
01. A new game (released within the past year) - Interaction isn't Explicit - Released in January of this year!
02. An old game (released 10+ years ago) - Super Mario Galaxy - We unfortunately have to come to terms that it has been more than 10 years since Super Mario Galaxy.
06. A quick completion (less than an hour) - Kuroobi - Playdate games are pretty short, this one is no different. In fact, I played through the story twice and still didn't pass the 20 minute mark!
08. A game you've been wishing and waiting for - Princess Peach: Showtime - I just wanted a new Peach game, and behold! She now has one.
16. A game from a genre you don't usually play - Dilemo - I don't usually play trivia games.
18-2. A visual novel or text-based game - The Botanist - It's a visual novel! Ironically not very text heavy though.
19. A game where you play as an antihero or a villain - Chew Chew Mimic - You play as a mimic, trying to lead people into your mouth. Sounds bad to me.
20-1. A game set in a historical time period - Pathway to Glory - It's a tactics game set in World War II.
23. A game where you play as a robot or an alien - Astro's Playroom - Astro is a robot of course.
24. An arcade-style high score game - Dinosaur Game - A high score, quick, easy to die, it fits the bill for me.
26. A game where you play as a bug or an aquatic creature - Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling - Guess what you play as in this game.
43. A game that one of your favorite artists worked on (artist, developer, musician, voice actor/actress, etc.) - KID A MNESIA EXHIBITION - This is a free game on PS5 and PC which is all about Radiohead music and it reminds me of their album covers.
50. A game chosen by the HLTB randomizer - Castle Conqueror Defender - This was randomly chosen by the randomizer!
