Bonus (0/5)
Alternatives (0/9)

Games beaten in March:
Wario Land 3 03. A really old game (released 20+ years ago)

Whoops. Only two completions these past two months. I played way to much Balatro this month, lol. Aiming to get at least five done for April.

A decent amount of completions in March, all of which I was able to tie to a challenge (20/59)

32. A game that starts with the same first letter as in your username (if your username doesn’t contain letters, pick a random letter): Final Fantasy VII
There weren't that many challenges this one fit into so I just threw it in here

38. A game with a subtitle: Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure
It sure does have a subtitle

37. A game that heavily features money, gold, or economics: Who Wants to be a Millionaire (2020)
You're goal is to become a millionaire so it counts

18-2. A visual novel or text-based game: Hotel Dusk: Room 315
This will probably be the only visual novel I play this year, and it was really good

36. A game that heavily features either fire or ice: Insurmountable
You climb up icy mountains, and you can freeze to death so I'm counting it.

21. A game with a female protagonist: Medal of Honor: Underground
Manon Batiste is not only the main protagonist of this game, she's also the most recurring character in the series. She's even more prevalent than James Patterson, the main character of the first game.

28. A game you watched someone else play first (partially or in full): JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eye's of Heaven

I watched Vinesauce play this game a few years back

19. A game where you play as an antihero or a villain: Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
Kane is arguably the villain of this game, and he's definitely at the very least an anti-hero. I wish Lynch was the main character instead, I think he's way more interesting than "gritty mercenary with a dark past who abandons his family"

01. A new game (released within the past year)
02. An old game (released 10+ years ago)
03. A really old game (released 20+ years ago)

Late to send this in! Here's some games I beat/dropped last month that met the requirements of the challenge!

28. A game you watched someone else play first (partially or in full) - Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars (Watched someone play it for an hour or two in a videogame cafe. This is what put the game on my radar. It looked so unique and interesting.
06. A quick completion (less than an hour) - Wanderlust (It's pretty, but don't buy it. Even on a nice computer, the game doesn't run well)
02. An old game (released 10+ years ago) - Bioshock 2
19. A game where you play as an antihero or a villain - The Last of Us Remastered

March Update

You can find my master list at here.

Been on holiday for half of the month, so only 3 medium size games finished, all slotting neatly into something:

Added:
21. A game with a female protagonist - Anna's Quest
36. A game that heavily features either fire or ice - Epistory: Typing Chronicles
38. A game with a subtitle - Condemned: Criminal Origins

Anna’s Quest is a point-and-click adventure from Daedalic Entertainment in which you are playing a young girl with telekinesis powers, seeking a cure for her grandpa while being chased by an evil witch who wants Anna’s powers to herself. I play a couple of point-and-click every year, as I find them requiring both patience and motivation. This year's gaming challenge has provided me with precisely that, and Anna’s Quest goes under the female protagonist clause.

Epistory: Typing Chronicles is a mix of an exploration RPG game and a quick-typing application. Enemies in this game have words floating above them, and you must type those words quickly enough to dispose of the enemies. You use the same mechanics to engage with the environment, burning obstacles and turning water into ice so you can walk into previously blocked environments.
Originally, I picked this as a freebie from the Epic store and was planning to put it in the “a game you got for free” category, but then realised that using fire and ice are major components of this game (others being wind and electricity, although not as much) so I slot it into the “A game that heavily features either fire or ice”. On a side note, I don’t think this is a good category – but we can talk about it in next year's challenge.

Condemned: Criminal Origins is an oldie that I needed a reason to play, so was happy that “A game with a subtitle” exists. It’s an FPS with a focus on melee fights, mixed with police investigation element. You play an FBI agent on the trail or a mass murderer, moving through environments that are so dark it burns your eyes to look at them. It was highly praised at the time, but I did not enjoy it, with design choices that for me made the game just not fun.

Next month going to combine a 30+ hours game with a few smaller ones. Don’t think I’ll get through more than 3 or 4, but we will see.

March has been very good, five games beaten, but april was a full time work and vacations month, so I have only one game to add, but it was one of my favourite games of all time! (American McGee's Alice)
I also changed the category for The Crew, since American occupied the place of my Favourite Artist from Sleigh Bells

In-Progress 2024 Challenge List:
04. An ancient game (released 30+ years ago) - Ultima 1: The First Age of Darkness
05. A time sink (50+ hours) - Temtem
09-2. A game that received new translations to other languages some time after its initial release - Kero Blaster

I took a break from gaming for the rest of April, so I'll just type up my monthly update earlier than usual.

Seven challenges finished in April. I'm definitely getting to the point in the challenge where I won't be completing as many as when I started. But I'm definitely making good headway.

Here's my collection: https://www.howlongtobeat.com/user/R2D21999/lists/29881/R2D21999-2024-Challenge

13. A game whose title could describe your life - Medial - The word medial means "situated in the middle" according to Google. My life isn't too bad, but I also wouldn't consider it too great. Currently in the middle. "Mid" as the kids would say.

21. A game with a female protagonist - Signalis - She is a robot so I suppose you could also consider her non-binary if you really over-think it. But she is referred to with feminine pronouns throughout the whole game, so it counts.

34. A bright and cheerful game - Boom Blox - It's a puzzle game where the entire cast is animals made out of blocks. Trust me, it's pretty bright and cheerful... aside from children being kidnapping in the second story... but just ignore that!

42. A game that had a red retirement rating on HLTB when you started playing it (10% or higher) - Dead Island - 13.7% retirement. Makes sense since this game is not very good.

46-1. A studio's very first game - GRIS - Nomada Studio's first game.

48. A game that has been a HLTB Game of the Month - Hades - It was the GotM during January 2021.

49. A game listed on the HLTB stats page, or the stats page filtered for a single platform - The World Ends With You - When filtered for DS, TWEWY shows up four times on the stats page. Probably the most prominent placement is that it's considered #4 for best rating when it comes to DS games.

Jan: 14 games
Feb: 5 games
Mar: 13 games
Apr: 7 games

Recently realized I aint yet shared my progress here, so here it be. I really just want to complete more games than last year so my goal is 30. I'll just cover April Completions since I'm behind:
User Image
✅️ 22. A game without any humans
• Kirby Planet Robobot
Outside weird title name choice, it's a flawless game. No humans.
✅ 15. A game that heavily focuses on flight
• Star Fox
It's a space rail shooter. Bout a star Fox.
✅️ 05. A time sink (50+ hours)
• Ghost of Tsushima
I couldn't, but I cam see someone else sinking 50+ hours into this one.
✅️ 18-2. A visual novel or text-based game
• Milk outside a bag of milk outside a bag of milk
Visual novel about a girl disassociating her life as a visual novel and all you answer choices are too rude. Narratively there were times I wondered if it'd work better as a short horror animation, but it works better in the format it's in already.

April Update! I played a ton of games this month with a few counting for the challenge. I was able to check off the following games from my list:

✅ 37. A game that heavily features money, gold, or economics Turnip Boy Robs a Bank

✅ 42. A game that had a red retirement rating on HLTB when you started playing it (10% or higher). Understand

✅ 50. A game chosen by the HLTB randomizer. Critters for Sale

Changes:

Unfortunately, I'm not really feeling Advance Wars like I hoped to. There are so many tutorials and rules to learn that I lost interest. I'm hoping that I'll be down to retry it later on when I can give it more of my attention. That being said, with the advent of emulators on iOS, I have loaded up my phone with a ton of retro games. I am finally playing Pokémon Gold, which I have never played before now. As such, I am changing the following challenge:

03. A really old game (released 20+ years ago); From Advance Wars to Pokémon Gold and will be completing it soon.

I also changed 07. A game you got for free; from Killer Frequency to emily is away and was able to complete it!

This puts me at 48% completed for this challenge so far, and we still have 8 months left in the year. I've really enjoyed keeping this challenge in mind while I'm deliberating what games to buy and play next. I've been able to keep a consistent pace on my backlog and even try games I never would have otherwise. Can't wait to cross more off the list!

Another slow gaming month, but 4 games completed thanks to some 3DS action and a couple of itch games at the end of the month.

Veeery bright and cheerful!

14-3. A game whose title starts with a number: Nine Hole Ninja ✅Completed Apr 21st
Didn't even realize this fit the category, which I didn't think I'd be able to complete, when I started it. If you got the Palestine Aid itch bundle and want an easy completion, play this.

25-2. A game whose protagonist you would want to be friends with: Our Cinderella ✅Completed April 21st

April Update

You can find my master list here.

To reach my goal of finishing around 30 categories this year, I am focusing my backlog game selection to match the challenge. I am also trying to select games that can go into multiple categories allowing me the flexibility of moving them around if I need too.

This month I finished 4 games, of which three fit neatly in:

Added:
07. A game you got for free - Human Resource Machine
16. A game from a genre you don't usually play - Momodora II
20-1. A game set in a historical time period - Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30

Human Resource Machine was a game I picked up when it was handed for free on the Epic Story. It’s a programming game, and as I do lots of coding in my day job, it was not that interesting. Still, a cute indie game that can teach some basic ideas to players who do not normally muddle with code.

I was never a fun of platformers, and therefore never been any good at them. Momodora II is a Mini-Metroidvania that everybody says is easy. I found it difficult, but I managed to complete it after dying at every boss about 15 times.

Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is a first-person tactical shooter simulating WWII scenarios. You control two companies and implement basic suppressing-fire and flanking strategies. The game didn’t click with me and I found the chapters quite repetitive. I started this game before and retired it after getting bored with the play loop. HLTB challenge gave me the push to get through it.
