April update!
Guess luck hasn't been on my side recently, same as last year (May 2023) PC Broke again (Motherboard again) college, work... Kinda Ruff... But well, while I still had a PC I finished 3 games that counted (18h).
04. An ancient game (released 30+ years ago) – Mike Tyson’s Punch Out - Incredible classic, actually a great game by todays standards and addicting!
17. A game that is themed around dogs or cats – Stray - One of the most visually astonishing games out there, but lacked on the gameplay.
25-1. A game set in a world you would like living in – LEGO 2K Drive - Good racing and a fun game all around, but ruined by predatory monetization system.
Here is my current progress, and the games I'm playing/planning to play.

My current progress for future planning:
Was progressing in Bioshock Remastered, after 8 years of having bought it, I was so close to finishing it, when pc went Kaput... :(

Start of may update :)
Wondered onto this challenge at the start of May and now officially joining in!
I was pleasantly surprised when my completions from earlier this year, made some good progress into the challenge ahead. Haven't made a full on planned list for games to complete for specific challenges, so currently sort of winging it by selecting challenges to complete in order of ideas for games. For that reason, the collection and list shall be updated as I finish games.

I won’t lie when saying that this year list has lots of categories I don’t like. I prefer categories where it’s pratty clear what kind of games cover them, and that they also give you a wide range of options.
I actually came up with a list of 50 categories for next year – but I’m getting ahead of myself here. Instead, I’m going to make a series of individual posts, each focusing on one of categories I’m not 100% clued on.
I’ll start with “Games with a diverse cast”. I looked this one up have yet found an answer. Are we talking about diverse group of population? Different race, ethnicity, sexual orientations? Or maybe we are talking about characters that just are very different from one another.
How big should the cast be? Does having two characters that are different from one another consider diverse enough?
Can someone come up with examples of games that they consider diverse?

Typically with vague categories the solution really is just "up to you". Like if you think you can make an argument to yourself about something that constitutes diversity under any of those topics, go for it, the original ideas weren't to be excessively strict but just prompts to encourage you to play something from your backlog.
I agree some of the worst prompts tend to be prescriptive ones, i.e. you can't know ahead of time if it contains such elements, typically you won't know if a cast is diverse in any way until after you play it. You can choose to define diverse any way you like for the context of the goal. Maybe it is just a cast with couple of characters of different persuasions, or maybe it's a huge cast of varying attributes, doesn't really matter.
My favourite goals are usually the ones like "play a party game" or "a strange game" simply because of the myriad ways you can interpret that. Genre, game title, literally or subversively. It can be fun thinking outside the box on things like that.

I hate those type of categories. Takes me more time to think up the game than actually playing it, and I feel conflicted with myself as it almost feels like I'm cheating :)

Yeah it can feel like that a bit too.
For your question though, fighting games tend to be at the top of my list for diverse cast games since they typically have lots of characters representing different places, races, cultures etc.

Yeah, I go by the same mindset too, just at the top of my mind, when I see/play a game and there is a wide variety of different people that is enough for the category.
Barely think about it, last year I went with Road96, this year I wen't with a FMV with a big cast.
Normally I struggle more in categories which you have to play the game before knowing if it fits (for example 39. A game that surprised you) and other ones in the style, but I don't mind it too much, just makes it harder to plan beforehand haha.

03. A really old game (released 20+ years ago): Sid Meier's Pirates! (2004)
Couldn't find another category for this one so it goes here
09-1. A remake or remaster of a game: Resident Evil (2002)
Pretty self explanatory
16. A game from a genre you don't usually play: Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
This is one of the only on-rails shooters I've played and it might be the last
27. A game that was adapted from another medium (book, movie, etc.) or a game that has been adapted into another medium: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
It's been adapted into a novel

One of the only games I own that actually works for this
44-1. A game you previously retired or put on hold: Undertale

May Update
Yet another slow gaming month😔. 2 completions.
20-2. A game set in the far future: Telocation: Gemini ✅ Completed May 18th
"you control a crashlanded space cadet that befriends a robot and who work together to gather gems and escape the planet"
Sounds like the far future to me
44-2. A game that you have beaten before and are replaying: Hatoful Boyfriend ✅Completed May 29th
Only completed one route on my first playthrough, which really was such a small part of the VN. Completed the main story this time, though still not every route.

This year hasn't gone nearly the way I planned as far as video games are concerned. Life is busy, but I can't complain. I'll just update my progress and keep chugging along with a high likelihood of not being able to come anywhere close to completing the challenge. I like keeping records nonetheless.
First off, I retired two games:
Terraria
42. A game that had a red retirement rating on HLTB when you started playing it (10% or higher)
I put six or seven hours into it total. I just couldn't get into it. I'm realizing more and more how story and character driven I am in my tastes with games, movies, books, etc. and I just struggle to find sandbox games or grindy, resource gatherer stuff like this compelling. It was aesthetically appealing - music was good and I like the blocky/pixely 2D stuff - but that wasn't enough to make me want to mine stuff, gear up, upgrade gear, fight boss, travel, upgrade gear, mine stuff, grind npcs, fight boss, and repeat continuously without a well fleshed out story.
Plants vs Zombies
50. A game chosen by the HLTB randomizer
When I first entered the challenge I hit the randomizer for this and kept the first game that popped up. I thought it would be perfect as a mobile option I could play during some occasional dead time at work - and it was to be honest. . . except for the doggone ads. . . I should have just bought the $2-3 version in the app store instead of thinking I wouldn't mind hitting skip ad every now and then. Well, of course they set it up so that the ads are almost all fat finger traps and egregiously stupid, and I just have such contempt for devs that allow that garbage that I couldn't take it any more, despite having sunk a few hours into what I felt was a fun little mobile game.
That puts me at 5 games "completed" for the year thus far. Averaging 1/month. Woot.
I'm still playing 3 games I listed in my previous update, but that didn't stop me from piling on another. Oh no sirreeeee. I really need to just stick to 1 per platform at a time, but I'm weak. So, I'm currently working on:
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II
27. A game that was adapted from another medium (book, movie, etc.) or a game that has been adapted into another medium
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
48. A game that has been a HLTB Game of the Month
Unravel Two
???
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
???
I'll figure out categories for those last two when and if I finish them. Here's hoping I make some better progress in the second half of the year.

What a bustling month this has been! 6 games completed towards the challenge this month, and Undertale to start June with a bang. Started doing a bit of planning for future games to play, and that really helped with choosing what games to start.

May update!
Back with the PC, ended up finishing 3 Nintendo Wii games I never had the energy to complete, and then started finishing my pc games again! A total of (88h) that counted towards categories.
08. A game you've been wishing and waiting for – Hellblade 2 - What a fantastic experience, delivers and improves on everything from HellBlade 1, I loved it!
09-1. A remake or remaster of a game – Bioshock 1 Remastered - After 8 years I finally finished it, great story and ambience, but gameplay is outdated.
14-2. A game whose title contains the name of a color – Sonic and the Black Knight - Honestly, way better than I thought it was gonna be.
27. A game that was adapted from another medium – Beyblade: Metal Fusion - More marketing product than game, but its acceptable.
32. A game that starts with the same letter as in your username – Tiny Tina’s: Wonderlands - An improved and creatively-free borderlands game, fantastic!
44-1. A game you previously retired or put on hold – New Super Mario Bros. Wii - One of the hardest games I've played, partially due to Wii's horrible controls too.
48. A HLTB Game of the Month (Jan-2024) – Pony Island - The first showing inside the mind of Daniel Mullin, it's a great game, but could be way better.
Here is my current progress, and the games I'm playing/planning to play.

Here's my collection: https://www.howlongtobeat.com/user/R2D21999/lists/29881/R2D21999-2024-Challenge
14-3. A game whose title starts with a number - 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim - 13 Sentinels starts with 13. Which by my calculations: is a number.
25-2. A game whose protagonist you would want to be friends with - Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Ori is a good guy. I'd be friends with this magic rat thing.
37. A game that heavily features money, gold, or economics - Magic Research - It's an idle game. Idle games are very big on managing resources and money. This one included.
44-1. A game you previously retired or put on hold - Dead Cells - I would have beaten this back in April, but I decided to take a gaming break in the middle of the month because of this game. So I'm counting it here.

Haven't played nearly as many games this year as I had last year. Life's been busy, but it's a good busy! Lot of nice things happening for me. Not sure if I'm gonna get all the bonuses this year, but I'm aiming to clear the core 50 challenges.

May Update
You can find my master list at here.
Plenty of free time this month, so completed 7 games, including two very large ones. All 7 were selected because they fit into the challenge – getting me almost to the halfway point.
Added:
01. A new game (released within the past year) - Invincible Presents: Atom Eve
04. An ancient game (released 30+ years ago) - The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary
05. A time sink (50+ hours) - Yakuza 0
13. A game whose title could describe your life - We Happy Few
14-2. A game whose title contains the name of a colour - The Stalin Subway 2: Red Veil
23. A game where you play as a robot or an alien - SteamWorld Dig
50. A game chosen by the HLTB randomizer - Rusty Lake: Roots
I always struggle with the “a new game” category. I don’t buy games when they are new – I usually wait at least a couple of years for a major discount. - Invincible Presents: Atom Eve is a new game but within a couple of months was given free on the Epic Store. I don’t like Visual Novels, and even with the light RPG elements, I didn’t enjoy this one.
The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary is an educational game from 1993. It was not in my backlog – I picked it up from an abandoned-were site just for the challenge.
Now Yakuza 0 was a game I had on my backlog for ages. What a fantastic experience! One of the best games I ever played! I always need an extra push to start games of this size, but I enjoyed this so much that I will keep playing some of the more significant side stories until I finish them. It easily fits into the time sink category.
I consider myself quite lucky not to had, so far, any dramas in my life. I’m older than most people on this forum, have an awesome family, the kids never gave me any grief, have a decent job that pays well, I am content with what I achieved and don’t overthink what I didn’t. In short – I consider myself one of those happy few, so a game called “We Happy Few” just nailed the “game whose title could describe your life” thingy.
The Stalin Subway 2: Red Veil is an awful old FPS. Its title contains the name of a colour. Thank god for that or It would have remained in my backlog unplayed forever.
SteamWorld Dig is a fantastic introduction to the Metroidvania genre. I’m rubbish at the genre, so the fact I finished it means a lot! And I also enjoyed it which means even more! You play a robot that digs and mines for minerals – so great for the A game where you play as a robot or an alien category.
The last game I added this month was chosen by the HLTB randomiser on the first go – and I was happy to see Rusty Lake: Roots. I played all the series up to this point, and this one had an interesting structure of many “mini puzzles” that I enjoyed. I don’t know why I didn’t pick up this one a while ago.
I also played “Metro – Last Light” and I’m almost finished, so that will make its way into next month's completions, Next month I plan to take on the Talos Principle and Prototype. Anything else is a bonus.

I'm curious how you felt about Ultima this many years later having never played it myself. It's so foundational and historical to the genre, but was it any fun in 2024?

June update!
Got really sick early on, but then I could enjoy my little break, and went on a gaming spree, spent a total of (75h) in games of the challenge this month.
03. A really old game (released 20+ years ago) – Hot Wheels: World Race - Acceleracers will forever live in my heart.
26. A game where you play as a bug or an aquatic creature – SpongeBob: BFBB Rehydrated - Pretty fun and also funny.
35. A game containing a real or fictional religion – Chants of Sennaar - One of the best puzzle games I've played, really fun and creative mechanics, and lore.
39. A game that surprised you - Lil Gator Game - I was wondering what game would enter in this category all year long, it's so specific but also vague, this was gonna be "Game without humans", I was having fun playing, but then the train hit me by the end, such an important message and a beautiful one too, I was sobbing, somehow it felt like home, like something that could or should've happened in my life, this game found a special place in my heart, it is made with love!
46-2. A studio's most recent game – TOEM - Pretty fun mechanic, and is a great lighthearted puzzly game.
49. A game listed on the HLTB stats page – Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - Somehow EA made a second really good game, fixed stuff and didn't choke, Happy me!
Here is my current progress, and the games I'm playing/planning to play.

05. A time sink (50+ hours) - Persona 5 Royal - Took me 123 hours. Yeah that's about right for this game.
07. A game you got for free - Gary the Gull - A free PSVR game. I wish I could refund it.
22. A game without any humans - Tetris Effect: Connected - It's Tetris.
25-1. A game set in a world you would like living in - Super Mario Sunshine - Isle Delfino, post-Bowser defeat, would be a great place for a vacation.
35. A game containing a real or fictional religion - Watch Dogs 2 - One of the first antagonists is a mega church using religion to make profits.
46-2. A studio's most recent game (at the time when you started playing the game) - What Remains of Edith Finch - Apparently this is the last game they've made, and it's only their second game.
